Punchline got me. On a related note, while I was interested in D&D before, Critical Role campaign 2 is what really got me into D&D proper and I was able to start my first actual game (one attempt before failed because of transportation issues after a few sessions ;-;) somewhat recently and I've been having quite some fun. I feel very familiar with the rules after watching so many hours of D&D (and googling while the video plays to check the spells they cast and the rules they reference). I think I've got the most involved character of the group I'm playing with, but it's not so extreme that it makes itself a visible divide, and it's a fun character with just two secrets, one major and one minor, that are gradually being revealed and will probably be out by session 10.

@@SoyDrinker Ahhh... That's kind of normal. I've DMed for eleven years, and the people who actually roleplay tend to view themselves as the main character of their own story. That's how most folks engage IRL. That's what makes interesting and dramatic stories, really, is when a player actually lives in the headspace of a character. As long as the character isn't inherently problematic, that's not an issue - especially with a good, if not seasoned, DM. Maybe I'm still misunderstanding since your use of "syndrome" _has_ to mean it's bad. I'm just not really getting a clear picture as to how.

If yer making a teevee show, for consumption by non D&D players, its OK to have a five page back story. But when you get to a table, and most ecerybody just wants to crawl the dungeon, 5 words on an index card is best.
@kid14346
@kid14346 2 жыл бұрын
@@vincejester7558 I wouldn't really limit a characters backstory to a certain length. I just have a couple things for making a character backstory: 1.) Relevance to the game. Is it important to the game to know your Father's Brother's Nephew's Cousin's Former Roommate? If not don't include it. If you are part of some organization, but you are never going to contact them or care about how they operate, maybe don't be part of an organization. 2.) Bonds or Relations to things in the world. You are a person in the world you would know people/organizations/family/antagonists/etc. Have a tiny list of like npcs/factions with status and location. 3.) Keep you backstory relative to your starting level. If you are a level 1 through 5 character maybe don't declare you stopped Tiamat single handedly. However if you are playing an epic 20th level game I would be okay saying you fought hordes of demons saving the world. 4.) Have a personality in mind. You don't need the entire personality of your character hammered out because a lot of it is discovered in playing the game, but at least have a vague idea if you are an optimist/pessimist, introvert/extrovert, etc. 5.) Please make your stats match your character. If your backstory is that you are a smooth talking charmer and you have a -4 persuasion, I am going to raise an eyebrow. Or say you claim to be a hearty person who can take a hit but your character has like 4 HP that will cause dissonance between what you want them to be like and how they are.

Unrelated to Critical Role but I did once play a Warforged Fighter named "X Machina" because it was the tenth machine in its production line. X wasn't the type of Warforged to cry aboot how "As a construct I don't have feelings and that makes me very sad", no, it was an emotionless construct that acted like it, and it was great.

God yes, I recently started a campaign where we started a 3rd lvl, but 3 of the other players I've talked to all wish we had just started a 5th lvl. Our group formed from our Adventurers League squad, we've been playing in a consistent teir 2-3 group for months now, so going back to teir 1 is honestly just not very exciting. Hopefully we level out pretty quickly.

I’m a fan of Critical Role. And what I’ve learned: Matt Mercer would only be a good sound effect guy if his players did the bare minimum for his games. _(If you don’t believe me, then Nott, Jester, Yasha, and FCG should convince you otherwise.)_ So for each character, I focus on the roleplay more than the combat. I can make MinMax builds all I want, but I won’t keep them unless I make a character to go with them. If I wanted maximum pwnage, I would play the D&D video games. Also, I write a half page brief backstory for confirmation, and a 3-15 page detailed/in character journal for a solid roleplay baseline. Like Nott the Brave, whose name is an acronym for Veth Brenatto. Her brief is as a cursed goblin; and ended with aquaphobia, a family, and Sam made the Hag. That’s right, without Sam, there would be no Blueberry Cupcake! I also learned not to have Main Character Syndrome, that enemies can have rule of cool and be awesome, to roleplay with allies, to back off when somebody else’s story is happening, to not joke around and mess with the DM, and “Insight Check.” (Unfortunately, my party Paladin didn’t learn Insight, and led us all into a 70 damage trap).

I dm a lot and as long as it’s discussed and agreed to make it fun for all but not OP or even UP then I don’t see the problem. There’s a lot of hate out there for CR but it’s brought a lot of fantasy fans who weren’t into ttrpg into the games and that can’t be a bad thing. It’s helped me heavily through lockdowns and many others.

I've watched all of CR's campaign 2. Recently i DM'd my very first D&D game ever. All new DM and players. the only experience any of us had in playing D&D was Star wars Knights of the old republic. I knew trying to be Matt Mercer was impossible but i did try to put a bit of his style into my DMing. My players were having none of it. they're all about getting quests done and doing the dice rolls, rather than rollplaying. Fair enough i suppose. I've forgotten what my point was...

Psssh. I'll be playing my favorite PC, Kalishtomay "Tommy" Olivernia, a Kalashtar daughter of Kalistomee Olivernia and Kember Li Ishpink. A paladin Oath of Nature and bard college of creation. Currently fleeing from the Valley her family long inhabited after discovering that Nodroz, the spirit tied to her Kalashtar ancestry, was not tied willingly. She was raised to follow the Five Alphas, represented by 5 red rectangles on each of her knuckles on both hands, and the rules of her families monastery. Her find steed? Glad you asked Dragonzord, a giant lizard mount. Oh her weapons? She has two, a shortsword enchanted to be a flute and her holy symbol and a sentient longsword named Abaas. Abaas is very outspoken about maintaining his pristine white paint job. The secret? Well, that is the little known armor enchantment known as "Doff Armor" inverted to be made into an armor enchantment of my own creation, "Don Armor". Where the official armor enchantment allows you to doff armor as an action my modification allows your to Don it in one action. She keeps it in a handy haversack that can only be accessed by attaching a special coin into the belt buckle shaped haversack. Completely... original...character design... Yup. No influence at all. "Aiy yi yi yi yie that was a long description" But, like, the real, like, secret, or whatever, is that, like, she forgets to, like, speak, like, her valley girl, or whatever, persona, when, "I use my mental communication capabilities".

If I'm able to find a relatively close reference for a "Unique" character build, I almost always Allow it. Just remember that it Doesn't always have to exist solely within the confines of The D&D Realm for it to work.... Try looking in "RIFTS" ... or in "SHADOW RUN". Maybe the vampire your looking for is actually in "VAMPIRE: THE MASQUERADE". You can usually find some really good starting points for those unique & eclectic character builds by digging around in Completely Different RPGs. LOOK a Little ... and you'll Find ALOT

I have had a few of these. Most of the time they are not a problem but they can get out of hand. I do have one of these types in my group now and and has been with us for 3 years or so. He runs some crazy stuff by me all the time. Also, he has been playing D&D for a very long time. Id say 20+ years. Even though he is a CR fan I have no doubt he has been doing this long before CR was a thing. I can also tell when he starts to get board of his character. He gets reckless. He tends to switch characters halfway or so in a campaign. I just kill him off and he is fine with this. Actually his idea. Sort of that red shirt guy. Honestly though, even though he sounds like an issue he really is not. Good guy really.

I feel that, some comic book store players I sat in with on a pick up game were like this. Luckily my group isn't this bad and I have a few Critters in the group including myself. The worst they came up with is calling themselves The Fortuitous 7, I used the word fortuitous a lot when NPC's described how lucky they were and there is 7 of them so it isn't too much of a reach.

It’s funny that people get too carried away with it, but I do think CR has done the D&D community a great service by encouraging people to roleplay in-depth dynamic characters. I for one would not be a DM if I hadn’t listened to hundreds of hours of CR. Matt Mercer does obviously have some influence, but my party members don’t know that because they don’t watch CR. What I’m getting at is, the Matt Mercer effect is a double edged sword, and you can learn A LOT about rules, spells, and helpful semantics from an unhealthy overdose of CR.
