Great video! I had a med school student player who really didn't want fantasy, so I had to homegrown an entire class which was an Intelligence based battle medic. No real spells, but spell like abilities that all had medical based names that both would heal people on the battlefield and could also provide significant one-shot style attacks when landed. Her sub-classes were based on if she wanted to go down the pharmacology route (potions, salves, and poisons), the neurological route (stunning and confusion based stuff), or the vascular route (high damage output blood letting attacks)

I would also HIGHLY recommend the *Gunslinger* class by *Heavyarms.* It's hands down the most well designed 3rd-party class I've ever come across, in my opinion. It's designed heavily around critical hits, and does so in a way that makes it really stand out as its own class with its own niche. Rather than making firearms more powerful, the class makes your character more powerful with firearms (which are included with the class and deal between 1d6 and 1d12 damage depending on the type of firearm). The abilities Bad Medicine and Deadeye showcase this perfectly. Bad Medicine lets you roll additional dice when you crit, scaling at levels in the class which correlate with proficiency bonus increase, up to a maximum of 6 additional damage dice when you crit. Deadeye on the other hand expands your crit range the more consecutive hits you land. Each time you successfully hit with a firearm your crit range expands by 1, capping out at a 16-20 crit range. The balancing factor to the expanded crit range is that, IF YOU MISS, your crit range resets back to 20 and you have to start over again (Sharpshooter is actually worse for this class because of this). It's such a well made class and it's a permanent option in all of the games I run. If you have a player that wants to play a class designed around crit-fishing, I highly recommend they give this a try. And because the power comes from the class and not the firearms specifically, you can totally make the gunslinger work without firearms, and just use bows or crossbows instead.

Be sure to check out the Thaumaturge (Benjamin Huffman) and the Disciple (Chronicle of Heroes). The first is a spellcaster with varied unique traditions that picks spells based on their Spell School and has a lot of unique mechanics based on their chosen schools, while the second is the Tome of Battle but for 5e, giving martials abilities that are a lot more "Wuxia/Magical". You get stuff like Candlecasting/Dreamweaving/Crystal Magic, and Way of the Phoenix where you fight with fire weapons, or getting a Spirit Guide in combat.

I gotta say, the witch sounds like a straight up mash-up of the Pathfinder 1E Witch and Oracle. PF1E Witch is prepared arcane caster with hexes and cackle and a familiar, Oracle is spontaneous divine caster with a curse and blessings that you select to define your own sub-class. PF1E has a TON of base-classes that all have their own unique 'thing' that they get, as well. Wonderfully fleshed out.

4e also had tons of unique classes that lost in transition. It is just sad - especially because 5e have track record of making some classes so bland that people actually believe in "more classes = bad" now - barbarian, ranger and monk are good examples of this - people say that they should be subclasses of fighter, even though it is possible to make them unique, 5e just failed to do so.

Honestly I love Ben's pugilist. Did a couple adjustments to it to fit 2024 and the 2 people at my table who've multiclassed into it LOVE it. I recommend the shaman from Laserllama- genuinely one of my favorite classes I've gotten to play so far. Wisdom based pactcaster that's all about spiritual ties to things like life and death, animals, the fae, and the elements. Such a flavorful option. Also made for a fun myconid character with a spores druid dip. KibblesTasty Occultist is also one I've recently brought to my table and HOO BOY did one of my players go HARD with their character. They were already a hexblood so they've gone full on double double, toil and trouble and hunting hags. LaserLlama Magus is also incredibly fun! Got to do a character in campaign 2 style one shot that was my first PC's son. Took his father's offer to be taught to be a wizard but he took more a shine to using his staff as a weapon so he ended up picking up a halberd for a spellblade. It's an awesome class for a smart scholarly gish without being your third bladesinger or hexblade.

I would suggest to not sleep on LaserLlama content. He's also made similar classes to the Psion, Scholar (named the Savant in his case) and the Shaman. If you end up choosing those three types of classes to add to your game as options, the LaserLlama ones would allow for more...I guess consistency since it's made from the same guy. Plus, their interpretation of Shaman and Psion feel like warlock-adjacent classes that can kinda make that type of spellcaster its own classification, which I think is very interesting. Also, the Warlord is awesome.

I feel the need to point out, anything that isn't specifically mentioned or changed in the new books isn't removed, you just use the original unchanged 2014 version. You can still play Artificer.

I tried to improve the 2024 Ranger as homebrew with 3 subclasses, I think it turned out really well and now has good class identity. Problem is it hasn't been play tested and I don't know where to share it properly

Speaking purely theoretical here you could technically create a Jedi. Think about it a monk class that specializes in swordplay and phonics

I really wish Artificers were added in the PHB. I get not everyone likes tech in their fantasy. But at the same time it doesn’t mean it should be excluded. It’s just as iconic a class as the others. Just say something along the lines of “This class will not fit in some settings. Dungeon Masters can choose to either reflavor or exclude the class if their setting is not technology focused.” It’s essentially how people would treat it anyways. Just add in that bit so that players don’t feel entitled to using the class in any campaign. People have talked about this already but none of the mechanics of the class absolutely require the artificer to be magitech based. Reflavor it to better fit the setting.
