This is why I feel sorry for kids these days; they'll never experience the sense of _awe_ we felt watching the generations turn from 8-bit to 16-bit to 32-bit to 64-bit to 128-bit, before we stopped counting bits altogether. They can look back at these games and say they look like shit, but at the time they came out we'd genuinely never seen anything like it. Soul Calibur especially absolutely _blew my goddamn mind_ the first time I saw it. These days, the PS5 comes out, and all the PS4 owners can really say is "Wow, that sure looks a little bit shinier than our old games! Look at that level of ultra-fine detail we're never even going to notice when the game is in motion anyway!" To my mind, gaming peaked at the 6th generation, of which the Dreamcast was the harbinger.

@@drizztdourden666not here to bash either system, but the Dreamcast didn’t make Sega bankrupt, their stupidity with the 32x and Saturn were the reason Sega almost broke. Sega was very incompetent at the decision making and for this reason their brand became a liability and gamers didn’t want to have a failure of a system which made the system inevitable fail. N64 had some very good ideas, but ultimately the cartridges and the 2 years behind the competition cost it it’s edge. I had a PlayStation as my console in the 32bit gen, but I had a good time with a N64 and both consoles were amazing in their own right. The Dreamcast is a console that O’ve skipped completely till 7 or 8 years ago, and it is amazing too, it’s a shame Sega couldn’t support it and had to get out of the hardware business, but it could be even more legendary with more games and time. I remember the Dreamcast launch quite well. It was the first console I purchased while out on my own. I say this because...without anyone stopping me I went insane. It started out small at first with Soul Calibur, NFL2K, and House of The Dead 2. However, by the second week all of my "sensibilities" went right out the window. I walked into EB and took over the Dreamcast section like I was at a fire sale. In one weeks time I purchased- Power Stones, Ready to Rumble, Hydro Thunder, Airforce Delta, and Sonic Adventure. You would think after purchasing 8 games during the launch window would satiate my gaming appetite but you would be wrong. The following two weeks happened in a blur that can only be described as gluttony. I snagged Blue Stinger, Tokyo Extreme Racing, NFL Blitz 2000, Trickstyle, Mortal Kombat Gold, and finally Aero Wings. For those that are counting...that's 14 of the 18 launch titles. Thankfully, I had a great job and at 50 bucks a pop they were a steal, well most of them. By the time the next load of games hit I really slowed down. I think my next two purchases were Dead or Alive and Resident Evil: Code Veronica. Addendum- Too this day, everytime a new console drops I go completely bananas. My one saving grace is having a fiancee that's every bit the gamer I am and she supports my shenanigans fully. I haven't missed a console launch since 1995 and I don't ever plan on stopping. Although this new 70 dollar price point isn't great (it still didn't slow me down). We were able to secure both the Xbox Series X and PS5 *physical at launch. By the Dreamcast launch comparison I went light. I wound up buying 8 games for them so far (not each)...;)

@@Ashitaka0815 Depends on the games. Polygon games look great but games with sprites look very pixelated. A good example is Marvel Vs Capcom 2. With my set up, the background graphics are sharp and crisp because they are polygons but the characters are really pixelated. I don't remember them looking that pixelated on a CRT. I think I'm going to have to get a good CRT for the sprite-based games.
@Ashitaka08154 жыл бұрын
@@sidearmsalpha yes most 2D games look pixelated, because they use sprites for the characters which are optimized for 240p instead of 480p. I don't mind as the pixels itself are relatively sharp (or "blocky") instead of blurry, but I also like their organic look on a CRT in all phosphor glowing goodness (why I have a Trinitron CRT as well). However there is one exception I can recall, that's Guilty Gear X. This games sprites are of notably higher resolution and optimised for 480p, makes a lot of difference and looks quite good on a modern TV.
