I agree, it's almost like the tone pots had very little effect. I would imagine those Seymour Duncan pickups are lower quality that you could purchase separately (another way to save costs). To my ears I've certainly heard better sounding P90 guitars. Just new pots, maybe pickups and a new toggle switch for sure. About that pickup selector switch, the body isn't thick enough for a standard Gibson toggle, and the route size wouldn't allow an SG style switch to fit either. That could be an issue.

Btw, beware that the thread on those switches is THINNER than the standard available switch caps. We tried to replace a broken black plastic cap with a brass one on a white jazzmaster, but it didn't fit. They're 0.5 mm off. My buddy says he going to use CA glue as a filler, because he badly wants a brass cap that can't break and looks cool. The Merle Haggard Tele has been around a long time, and has a set neck.
@jameshill2015
@jameshill2015 4 жыл бұрын
The set neck should have been done YEARS ago! My tele is one of the least expensive guitars l own at $450.. it is made by Wolf, it has a 5 peice neck thru design, walnut deck ash body, ebony board, the neck is mahogany/ash/walnut and has a graphite nut. Swithed out tree to Graphtech, pick ups to SD vintage Hotstacks, took off the standard chrome tele knobs and threw on some sweet walnut knobs and it is one of my favorite guitars.. sustain is as good as it gets, the heel? Omg! Its so smooth and contoured it is the easiest to play by far, the frets were FAR better than l was expecting for simply $450.. l only polished the light oxidation off them and they were done.. likely not a Jescar wire but it works, very level which again..l was not expecting. My favorite tele Fender makes is the "Tuff Dog" signature Waylon l think it is..not sure but its gorgeous and also has that set neck contoured..lil too much$$$ for me but its so nice. Why is it a company can offer a neck through, 5 wood, ebony board guitar for under $500 but a company like Fender offers set neck (not even Neck-Thru) and it breaks the bank? Should they not move into the 21st Century before the 22nd Century? I know their machining and CNC is all set up for the ol tried and true bolt on stuff..it does work l get that but hell..so did rotary phones and 8 tracks.. you shouldn't produce and sell guitars with "if its not broke, dont fix it" attitude about modernizing and not giving people a guitar that IS worth the selling price. Todays tech is off the chain but you wouldn't know it by Fenders guitar line.. going from a 3-way to a 5-way pickup selector is not exactly "Keeping up with the Joneses" maybe a NEW body style or how about SS frets? Maybe a serious quality bridge? Something not made out of a flat plate with a bend and some holes drilled in it or stamped steel saddles..its 2020.. Fenders trem should be better than a Vega trem after all these years but no..lets make it 2pt and wait another 50 years to make a change. Enjoyed the vid...THANKS!

Valid points Jim. and these giant guitar firms are holding on by the skin of their teeth now as the growing number of musicians are playing instruments comissioned elsewhere. And who can blame them? You have the likes of PRS and Ibanez and Reverend who seem to understand and so we see their products start to become reknown for being the better alternative. I am a lefty so my choices are limited straight away, well almost i can play right side over but i am predominantly left handed and get charged a premium because of that so more independent Luthiers are always my prefered option but i still love collecting guitars, left or right handed.

I have a similar Squire "Telecaster Custom" with Duncan P90's and the same control layout, though different bridge. I love it and have to say my P90's are nowhere near as noisy as that guitar. Mine came with a one-piece maple neck with the skunk stripe truss rod rout and, I think, the same tuners. So, there "is" a more reasonably priced alternative to that guitar aside from the set neck and lightened/f-hole body design. I'm a real fan of P90 pickups, especially the SD Phat Cat set. Your demos are always great to hear and watch and it's clear from the wall behind you that you're a Tele fan, big time.

I’m a little confused why you pointed out the Les Paul looking/located 3 way switch and Gibson style knobs like they’ve never done that before on the Tele? Certainly not standard but I’ve seen that configuration on older Telecasters.

Perfect Tele for a Gibson player. The shorter scale length I love.
@P_Ezi

Bob Boitt I did just the opposite. I wanted to try LP-ish tones on a Fender scale, so I built a Warmoth Tele with full size Fender maple neck, rosewood fretboard, mahogany body, maple top, and P-rails. Doesnt sound exactly Tele or LP, but it does sound very good and P-rails are quite versatile. I dont understand how some people can switch back and forth between scale lengths - unless maybe they string them with different gage strings to get consistent tension. I feel very clumsy on the Gibson shorter scale.

I got a chance to play one for a day when I stayed at the Hard Rock Hotel in Punta Cana. They have a partnership with Fender and you can have a different guitar sent to your room daily. I liked everything about it except it seem to suffer from poor QA - or maybe previous guest abuse, but if it got some work done to it, it would be great.

It’s got a lot to do with the shape and the contours. Anytime that I have played one of those 72 reissue Telecasters upon which this model seems to be based, even the ones with these same Gibson features still sound like a Telecaster to the people around me. How much that has to do with the real sound and how much it has to do with visual association could remain to be seen.

For me Fender really REALLY have to expand their market...Metal guitars are getting more popular...will not be a bad idea to have a Fender Metal Series with neck thru or set necks, jumbo frets, thinner profile neck, Seymour Duncan or EMG pickups, locking tuners and hard tail bridge...they don’t have to be necessarily black, they can have black pickguards and hardware and have sparkle finishes like the classic candy apple

There were some back in the 80's, think that was the Vista Series. They did a Flying V type thing called a Katana. And the "Contemporary" Strat that had Floyd type bridges. Would be great if Fender reissued those!

I have a spalted maple tele that came out a few years ago made in Indonesia and I believe they're a better quality than the Mexican units. Most of the Mexican units are and use the cheapest crap supplied by Fender on the market. That's why there are so many better guitars out there than Fender and Gibson. Both over priced and any of the new ones lack quality.

Why not just buy a Gibson or Epi LP or SG with P90s? Nice looking guitar, but I mean if you want Gibson scale, pups, & bridge, plus the glue on neck, just get one. Telecasters are my fav guitar, they have stood the test of time, plus mines been through earthquakes & tornados, not to mention the abuse she's suffered at my hands these last 30 years, yet she still plays great, holds tune, & keeps up with any guitar. Any way it's not for me, but to each his own.

Strangest Tele i've had was a Indonesian made Fender with a Mahogany body and a carved spalted maple top, set Mahogany neck and it was supposed to have 2 Seymours but the previous owner had removed the neck pickup and replaced it for a Les Paul Jr style pick guard so it was more like an Esquire..... played and sounded awesome.... still kicking myself for selling it. Strangest thing about that guitar was the fact it was slightly narrower at the waist and top bout, didn't fit my case while a normal telly did but it was noticeably more comfortable as the normal tele body.

What actually defines a Tele? IMO if it doesn't have a Tele bridge, single coils, and a 25 1/2 scale it's not really a Tele. Body shape means nothing. The sound is going to come mostly from the pickups with a bit from the bridge. Playing feel will come from the scale length, neck contour, fretboard radius, and to a lesser degree the bridge. So, this doesn't sound like a Tele or play like a Tele - so it's just something else that sort of looks like one. It may be a great guitar, but it's not a Tele.
