Dunno if you played Half-Life 1 (highly recommended), but Barney was a Security Guard back at Black Mesa, a friend of Gordon's, and he is the player character of the game Half Life: Blue Shift.

On that last part youre supposed to put the blue barrels under the ramp where the metal cage is, the air in the barrels will lift the ramp up and allow you to proceed with the airboat
