This is the only video on YT that actually shows how a student can find second position on his own. Thank you very much for this video, it was very helpful.

I am teaching myself 2nd position right now. You are explaining it so well. As a teacher, I think your scope and sequence here is well done!! Thank you. It's like you are thinking my thoughts about how to play in 2nd!

Wow! Two 2nd positions has blown my mind! Great advice as always - I've been struggling with trying to always anchor in the same place then play high or low fingers as necessary, but the realisation or permission to utilise two locations for 2nd position will help enormously!

Long-time no see :) perfect timing... I am practicing Bach's Giga and it has very pesky 2nd positions....this video definitely opened my eyes (since I am learning all by myself and use great online tutorials like yours). Thanks a lot!

I have less issue playing in 2nd as my ear works the same. I have more problems with reading as line- space finger relationship is reversed . Same with 4th.

Hi, I would like to ask how do you learn & remember which finger is what note when having to move into different Positions, let’s say when playing a piece which requires to move the fingers in more positions. Do we have to learn the positions by heart?

So what the difference between second and first position is second position count like moving to the next string without having to or what?
@violinlab4 ай бұрын
Yes, sometimes it's better to stay on one string, so 2nd position can be helpful in that way.

I got a problem and I need your help..My finger tips are , by nature , coarse and flatter than a violinist's finger tips should ..They help me greatly when I play the lute and made me an excellent player because pressing two strings at the same time and in a perfect manner needs strong and coarse finger tips like mine , but when it comes to playing the violin I have trouble pressing the strings even in first position , and the problem becomes more and more complicated when moving to second and third positions because the distances between the notes on the fingerboard become narrower ..Pressing strongly on e.g C sharp hardly gives the sound of C in first position , but when I move to second position the sound is a mix between C and a quarter of tone ( up or down ), and when I try to press lightly the sound is hoarse and scratchy...What do you think ?? >>> Should I quit ?? ..I love the violin very much and I enjoy playing it because my being a good lute player helps a lot when playing the violin especially when it comes to oriental scales and I would like to master the violin as I did the lute , but my coarse finger tips are standing in the way .

A user perspective: might it have been more helpful and less confusing (and also less stressful to beginners to positions - like myself!) to introduce just ONE of the varieties of second position to begin with? The info overload here makes second position feel like a bridge too far, for me at least... How about first establishing just ONE variety of second position (i.e., the easier of the two, whichever that is...) & let that become established before the complication of the second variety is presented?
@violinlab Жыл бұрын
I understand your frustration. I introduce information more incrementally, as you have described, on my teaching platform Violinlab.com. But here, on KZbin, I present ALL the relevant information on a topic so that people like yourself can digest it however you feel you can. Consider this more of a reference video, not a lesson. You could save it and come back later as you approach a piece with 2nd position requirements.

I think it's much more natural to place the thumb between first and second finger in each frame of position
@Lily_and_River5 жыл бұрын
Yes I'm not a professional but I teach my students to tilt their hand a bit more than she does. So that the side of the index finger and the thumb are less likely to be gripping the neck. It seems that her hand is free to move between positions and she is able to play a vibrato. But for many this can become a problem with such a hand position. Other than that this was a great video about second position, and she's still right about the thumb moving along with the different positions. For me the thumb would ideally end up even higher in both the lower and the higher second position.

Can we just play the piece in first position and cross strings?
@violinlab5 жыл бұрын
Often times you can, but the problem is that it can make for very awkward string crossings.
