How to play like Johnny Ringo McDonagh. There are 3 big things to take away:
1) The bent wrist. It's not like most trad playing with old school merits. You don't hold the stick and strike as if you were using a bare hand, rather it's more a "casting out" of the wrist back and forth that makes his playing style unique.
2) Tune your drum LOW....and then to get bass kick sounds play a bottom end style. Cupping your hand and sliding it from top to bottom results in a percussive bottom-end style playing method. When you play KEEP IT SIMPLE and percussive, rather than overall tone driven.
3) FINGERS and LOCALIZING the sound: You use fingers on the back of the drum to make small changes to the sound, and in cases where you keep your hand in one position, you can create a set of areas on the drum head that will carry different tones and sounds. All this without moving anything in your tone hand!
