Jacqui Abbott’s tale of how she joined the Beautiful South is a movie in waiting

.... a story that involves “slinging Maris Pipers onto a supermarket shelf”. Much of her early life in Merseyside would make a movie actually, not least the moments where she takes home the trophy after winning a disco competition dancing to the Pointer Sisters, and when she first hears Sly & the Family Stone while skating in a roller-rink. And possibly when her brother storms into her bedroom and smashes her John Taylor of Duran Duran mirror to settle a score. This is thoroughly entertaining, all of it, and so well told - the music she discovered on the Beautiful South tour bus, the records that offered “a window to escape”, her pigeon-racing Dad and the birdmen of Blackpool and the life-changing effect of the Cocteau Twins and the Pet Shop Boys.
Jacqui and Paul Heaton have a new album, N.K-Pop, and are touring again from November.

This is the first time hearing Jaqui Abbot, (someone whose voice and expression has always hit home), interviewed. The ego bypass is the first impression. How what goes into her heart is what comes out of it is where she comes from. A natural if ever was one. She never talks about her voice, talent or as herself as special, just being part of it all. Thank you, all, for this wholesome interview, I had wondered what Jaqui Abbot was like. Like Jaqui Abbot.

One of those rare people who after hearing interviews etc, you just know they are going to be kind, friendly, humble and grounded. Its worrying she has been away for some four months now, without a word from anyone how she is doing. She has a legion of fans who think the world of her and I'm sure would love to know when she will be adding that beautiful voice to the band again. Get well soon Jacqui 👍

just recently ive heard their duets...on the back of that I went and got 'Manchester Calling' and the new one. Could see why they were both N01's. Being a musician, i enjoy listening to the harmonies n the chord structures of the songs and the wonderful harmonies together. Every song could be a single! BS was a great band but these two as a duet are a great combination. All their stuff is quality writing! Thank you Jacqui and Paul!! Amanda Suffolk

Bless her! I share a love of Cocteau Twins, especially Liz Frazer's vocals - hadn't heard anything like it at the time. Nearest you'd come would have been Kate Bush or Sinead O'connor, and their voices were impressive to be fair, but Liz was in a league of her own.

It was in Huddersfield that Paul announced that Jacqui didn't want to sing the explicit version of, "Don't Marry Her" because her grandma was in the audience and Jacqui didn't want to get into trouble 😆 Still love the songs and albums now. I always thought that Brianna Corrigan was a great singer but Jacqui more than made up for her departure.
