Several people I've seen either ignore GLaDOS entirely or only half-listen to whatever she is saying. Watching someone who has played the first game and both listens to and understands what she says (no matter how backhanded/sarcastic it is) is awesome. You're not wrong about Portal kind of being a proof of concept/beta for this game. If I remember correctly, the first Portal was made by like eight guys as part of a contest for small devs to be included in The Orange Box (though I may be wrong about the contest and mixing it up with another similar story). Valve had put together this collection of games that included Half Life 2, Team Fortress 2 and a certain small game as a fun little bonus. It took off. Memes were everywhere, and dollar signs were in publisher's and distributor's eyes. So valve gave the team what they needed to make a full-scale, AAA game (back when that actually meant something). This was the result.

We kinda did get a Portal 3. They made an interactive experience for the Steam Deck based on Portal. You can still play it on a normal PC, but it clearly was made for the Steam Deck. Oh and there's the spinoff Bridge Constructor Portal.

Man I need to get back into Portal. I played Portal for the first time ever two years ago completely blind and did a bit of Portal 2 immediately after but stopped due to getting busy with uni lol. I loved it and can't wait to get back into it again and interact with GLaDOS once more. Also, HAPPY NEW YEAR!

It's not _impossible_ that Valve will make these games, they've made a couple others, but 60% to 70% of their revenue comes from selling other people's games through Steam, or their own games on Steam Deck, or partnering with Netflix, or other things. Video game making really just isn't their thing anymore. They do a couple here and there, but... being as profit driven as they are these days, instead of creativity driven, it's really just more likely that they'll make online, subscription based games. Indeed, that's what they're working on at the moment. It makes far more money than selling individual copies of games ever will.
