What a video that shows me the old school.I am sorry for myself because I have never used an old PC like this. :(

Great computer. The thing of it is, I have a 1997 Intel PC running NT 4.0 Workstation SP6 and she still runs like a charm. And yes people are watching this to see why old stuff works the best.

Now you are upgrading To Windows 98 on a 1997 Intel PC?
@jforb42714 жыл бұрын
@truebassB The mouse on this one is a serial mouse, and does not need anything other than a normal serial card (or multi-function card, which was common back then). There are similar Microsoft bus mouses that require a special card.

It is Othello. Microsoft called it Reversi, probably to avoid paying a licensing fee

I have learned about Reversi just last year, when I did a bit of research on the internet on how to use virtual machines with old OSs. And I found a post written by a certain Mark Gibbs who actually didn't type much information about it. He only wrote he never used to play games on PCs, except for a few games at Reversi when having a break from work. But this name "Reversi" sounded new for me (I'm under 30 and my first OS ever was Windows ME), so I was wondering what it was. It came out this game was included in Windows 1.0x (as you show it on this video) and generally is also known as "Othello". When I read this on Wikipedia, I was like "Oooh, so that was 'Othello on the Internet' in the games directory from Windows ME..." (I've never played Othello, 'my' Windows games were most likely Solitaire and Pinball). WinworldPC still has all the versions of Windows 1.0x and MS-DOS as well (hope it is legal), so I put everything in PCem and I now have Reversi with red and blue pieces on a gray board with a green background. Damn, this game destroys me already at "Beginner", lol. Looks like CPU becomes more powerful when you allow it to place blue pieces on the external square. It took me a while before understanding its logic. And, yes, I have to set Date and Time every single boot. I think that still having original hardware is better than emulating one because you have the feeling of those old days. I don't have my first PC anymore, but my uncle still has an old desktop from 1994 with Windows 3.11 For Workgroups, two serial mices, Microsoft and Commodore (this one has 3 buttons but unfortunately it doesn't work anymore), a 5-6 pins keyboard (it doesn't even have "Start" keys), an Epson printer with serial port too and only one slot for floppy disks. RAM is 128 KB, CPU was like an Intel 80486DX2-S (I don't have it in front of me, I wrote infos on a paper; the BIOS was Award 4.50G), HDD 256 MB I think and video card was Cirrus Logic GL-5428 or 29. Last year I attempted to turn it on. It even has a button called "Turbo": basically, if you don't use it, the CPU runs at 33 Mhz with a red-colored led. But if you switch it ON, the clock speed raises until 66 and a green led turns on. Then it had different booting, because DOS didn't start Windows, but another program called "Quik Setup" (written exactly without the "c"). Once in Quik Setup, you had some options to choose by pressing numbers (and start Windows was in between). It was an office computer, because you can boot CAD or similar directly from QS. And it is very noisy. Then it has 2 more buttons: if you wish to reboot the machine, just press "Reset", otherwise use the "Power" button to turn it off. Ah, and when you enter Windows, you can go to change screen resolution by opening "SetRes", an external program that went with the Cirrus Logic card. Looks like Windows 3.x didn't have resolution options back then.

The clock board was an add on made by other companies, I have several of the boards, most early ones were from AST (Six Pack). But this computer has only original IBM stuff in it, so I didn't want to add the clock board and ruin the originality.
@jessehill999312 жыл бұрын
the IBM PC and PC-XT have an optional 8-bit ISA card you can buy that has the Real-time Clock built in. That is why any version of DOS below a certain version by default asks you for the date and time upon boot up. I have an IBM PC-XT without the RTC module. Mine has more memory than this one (640k) and my hard drive squeals but works!

@jforb427 Thank you very much.I know that those doesn't have a mouse and i surprised by thinking it came with the PC. :D Do you need a card for it right? Well i'm still looking for a 5150/5160,so i'm gathering information about it,i had an AT once but it's history. -_-
@MrJumper6814 жыл бұрын
@jforb427 You also need a driver for dos, as i remember it it had to be the right driver for the right mouse. You also have to insert in the autoexec.bat and the config.sys. And not alot of dos programes could use it. I used it for Autocad, and as i rember it pctools or norton.

@MrJumper68 I never used windows ver 1, but do you rember GEM Desktop? or i belive it was call that. Back then was the days building your own elektronics, programming your own software. No days its all in a box from China. I think a hole generation is lost an thats sad.
