I don't often comment on videos, but I feel compelled here. I love the insight into your artistic vision and philosophy. Landscape photography is much easier with iconic landmarks and gorgeous vistas, but making art out of the seemingly mundane and ordinary takes much more vision and yes, "patience" :). I live in the Midwestern U.S. and finding iconic scenes is tough. Your patient and visionary approach to shooting locally is inspiring and instructive for me.

Thank you so much for this inspiring video, Simon. The moment I saw the 2 birches, a thought came to my mind: "The composition of the bigger birch hanging over the little one, seemed sybolic, in a way. It looked as if the bigger one, was protecting the little one as some sort of parent...". And that's why photography is such a great hobby to have, to see things (and learning to) and interpret compositions in so many different ways, and completely different from someone else. Recently, I saw a workshop by Joe Buissink, who is a wedding photographer (complete different type of ' field'), and he said: "If you take a very good look at the best photo's you took (noone elses opinion, YOUR best photo's), and analyse them, eventually you'll find out that there's someting of YOU in every single one of them... They will show you why you took that photograph and why it 'spoke' to you, just one tiny moment in time that you clicked the shutter button...". I think he is 200% right with that, and that you think the same way...? I mean, from what I see in your video's, you try to think, rethink and then click, which I think every photographer should learn: don't rush it, don't "Spray and pray!". Take some time to look at all factors that make a good photograph. Thanks for sharing your vision, thoughts and stunning images! They made me realise I need to slow down too, because I'm guilty of rushing far too often. Another thing you've made me realise, is that it's perfectly fine to go home without 1 single image... Making good photo's can't be forced. Thanks once again!

Aww so good to see yourself and Meg again Simon. I totally understand what you said, it's good to be true to yourself and enjoy what you do in your own time, that's when you get the best results whether it be photography or just out hiking and taking in the air and enjoying nature. Never feel obligated to put up videos often or to put up something that's not really what you want to put up. It's your channel, you carry on doing what you love. There's a lovely relaxed way about your videos that I like, the treks, the music, the photography and the story behind each scene and of course Meg!! Loving her new coat. Let's hope this year brings lots of atmosphere, mist and maybe a bit of frost and snow. Happy New Year!

Simon, so glad to have you, your photography, and down to earth thoughts back here. Oh, and also Meg plus a belated birthday wish to her. I think you hit the nail on the head so to speak. If you don't shoot what you love and for yourself it is not going to work. As landscape photographers, weather and light are so important and yet out of our control. Again, being where you want to be and doing what you love is the key. Best to you in 2019 and I look forward to more of your woodland journeys and photography. Jim

I am not even close to the photographer you are, but you are such an inspiration to me. I love hearing your thoughts on how you research your potential spots, and what goes into your thought process involving your photography. As time goes by, I am in agreement with you about being selective when shooting. I used to go out and take pictures just to be pressing the shutter release button and deleting most of them. Now there have been times when I've gone out and haven't pressed the shutter release at all. Granted, many photos still get deleted, but I am more selective. Being selective also gives me the chance to really enjoy nature. Thank you for what you do and share with us!

Excellent points Simon and something all photographers should bear in mind. I often forget to enjoy the landscape/moment in the process of taking images or shooting video which is a shame. Also the long game is key in landscape photography, scouting compositions and planning for a future shot are key. Looking forward to future videos and photos.

Thank you very much for that, Simon. I'm glad to have you back, but would be ready to watch your channel *whenever*. Two points: first, it was evidently a flat day with flat light, but you did develop -- or you and the sky developed -- a very interesting and subtle background to that first photo of the two birches. It was interesting in itself. Second, I think most of us would be pleased with whatever reflections you have on the experience of landscape photography, even if it is a flat dull day. This video is just what I mean. The weather did not cooperate with your previsualisation, but it was a rich offering for us all the same. So thanks again!

What a pleasant surprise seeing your notification pop up Simon. A bloke and his dog go out for a walk and see photographs or at least the potential for photographs, I go out with the dog and see absolutely sod all, I really struggle with woodland / moor photography and I am really really envious of what I have just watched. I agree with you about the social media part. Sometimes when I shoot a photo I start to think if people online are going to like it or not. And that thought influences my way of photographing and searching for potential compositions/photo's. So I think I will try your method of shooting conceptimages and adding the GPS coördinates to that image so I can return when the conditions are right. No Rush. Thank you for another great video and advice!
