Thank you for your helpful videos, Anthony. I have been watching them as an amateur bass player who wants to start playing jazz and your insight is incredible. I like the point of the scales having notes in common. If you think about it, any two scales of seven notes must have an overlap of two notes or greater, because 7 + 7 = 14, and that's two more notes than we have in the chromatic scale at least. However, each hexatonic scale has precisely one scale that shares no notes with it. For whole tone scales it's a major fourth up, so C whole tone scale shares no notes with F whole tone scale. For pentatonic scales, there's tons of non-overlapping pentatonics (21), a few non-overlapping hexatonics (7), and only one seven tone scale. I try not to get in my head too much about music theory, though. For me, it's too easy to go deep into that and forget about learning how to actually play. It's a trap. But I find it endlessly fascinating so I wanted to share.

What are you using to play those ambient chords?

I use spitfire audio - intimate strings. Great sounding strings for the price!

That is pretty complicated. I wonder if that approach is not too heady.

If you want to play through the changes, the simplest way to do that is know your CHORD TONES! Then you can play ANY other note you want, including chromatics, as long as you resolve all notes to a chord tone. Forget scales! That is NOT how the jazz masters played, especially on the standards!
@basstip3 жыл бұрын
I agree 100%.And the first step is one trying a chord tones solo first.

Good god. Such a simple Solution to such a common problem. Now when I consider giving harmony the same attention to detail as I do with rhythm and physical technique, it seems like such an obvious answer. Better go and learn my damn chord tones.

Chord tones are key but scales can help you identify them. With proper phrasing and instead of playing up and down a scale, the scales are useful in recognizing chord tones.
