All your bots that combine into your combiner they all have to be 4*stars or higher. That's the only way they rank up.

Best advice I have would be to make sure you level up all your aerial bots and their abilities because they really come in handy for taking out heavy defenses like lasers or mortors

I'm a decepticon myself but you should save your shanix and cyber coins for build bots. Make sure to level 3 and 4*s whenever possible. Good luck progressing in the game my dude :) -Astro
