in 2018 I got a Used Dell Visor WMR Headset for about $150 which was my first VR ever. I loved it to bits, then in early 2020 I got a used oculus quest 1 Then early this year I got a used quest 2. I have a lot of nostalgia with the WMR headsets, they were affordable, decent ways to get into VR before Oculus(Meta) really started offering their super cheap headsets. Will always love these things even if in reality it would suck to go back compared to what I have now.

I just got the quest 3 and I have to say those pancake lenses make a world of difference. No more fiddling with the headset to get it just right, you put it on and boom your golden. The screens are also a huge upgrade from the 2, the screen door effect is basically gone. I didn't think ide care about the lack of tracking rings on the controllers but man are they so nice, and tracking is so spot on. If your upgrading from this to a quest 3, I think you'll be very happy. I think the lines are blurred a bit if you own a quest 2 though. My daughter owns a quest 2, when I put her headset on and your in game you kind of forget about the upgrades to be honest. The fact that the quest 2 is only $250 these days and the 3 is a base $500, in my opinion the upgrades aren't noticable enough while playing to justify the cost. In the future when we get more quest exclusives and we start seeing the power of the xr2 maybe I'll eat my words then. But as of right now, I don't think there is a big enough leap between the two to justify the cost.

As a Quest enthusiast I couldn't agree more. I loved using the Quest 2 the past 2 years, and although I like the Quest 3, I wasn't nearly impressed by it as I thought I would be. It's as you said; once you get into a game, you just forget what headset you're wearing, and enjoy the game. If the Quest 2 didn't exist the Quest 3 would be a no-brainier, but if you want to save some cash and still have an excellent VR experience, Quest 2 can still give you that.

The big difference will be the mixed reality. Playing the games where aliens break through your wall and you are shooting them in your living room changes everything. As more mixed reality games come out it will become more of an upgrade overall.

Picked up an odyssey+ for 50€. It was listed as broken and my plan was to just take the screens out of it and use them on a vive pro eye screen swap. Then the odyssey+ arrived and out of curiosity, i tested it out and turns out its completely functional, screens look amazing, even came with the controllers. Dunno if the seller just didnt know how to set it up or something. Im still going to do the screen and lens swaps on my vive pro eye, but damn was that 50€ for the odyssey+ the best deal i've ever seen

I still use my Samsun Odyssey original. The one before the plus. It's mainly for flight and racing sims now. All other VR was played with the Quest 1, 2 and now 3. Now I'm thinking of boxing up my Samsung Odyssey and using Quest 3 for everything VR/AR.

@@Vanity7ka lot less screen door effect. I know the Odyssey plus reduced that effect, but on the Quest 3 I don't see it unless I'm really looking for it. The resolution is higher, but I haven't tried really increasing it in SteamVR or Oculus desktop software. In sims everything is much more readable on the dashboard. In Contractors and Onward tracking is awesome, no controller rings to bump up against.

FYI supersampling your in-game resolution isn't going to magically make the game resolution appear higher than the hardware resolution. Yes, it will smooth out the edges of objects sort of like a super costly version of Anit-Aliasing, but its not worth the game literally being twice as hard to run. Always stay at about 100% resolution and maybe 150% if the game doesn't have particularly good anti-aliasing.

I've used a HP VR1000-100 headset for 3 years and I ran into a few issues with audio static and controller tracking problems, but overall the experience was very playable. I fixed the audio issues and the controller tracking was manageable, I even upgraded to the reverb g2 controllers. I honestly like the clarity of the screen and despite the FOV being smaller than other hmds (95 degrees), the fact that stereo overlap was perfect made it worth it, even more so that the screen edges were round shaped instead of box shaped. I decided to gift it to a friend while I "sidegraded" to an Oculus Quest 1, FOV and tracking are much better while the bitrare compression and colors are inferior to my first headset. Except for the black levels, which are fantastic! Honestly, if microsoft worked on the MR system more it would have been the best cheap PCVR solution with few compromises. A bit sad that they decided to abandon the idea.

Your controllers lasting 5 years is good. After 2 years of having a quest 2 I think i might have worn my joysticks out a bit. Since you are using it for PCVR as long as its supported in steam and you have drivers you could probably keep on using it for a while to come yet. Some of the meta stuff has already been discontinued and no longer supported in the time you have had your headset.
@Vanity7k10 ай бұрын

@masamasa181510 ай бұрын
Quest 2 will be supported for a long time yet. Sales of the Quest 3 haven't been great as of yet so I do believe meta is going to have to extend support for the quest 2 to support more software sales. The quest 2 was a huge seller for Meta and since the price drop there are even more out there. If I'm being honest, I think that the quest 2 will see support for every game release form the next 2 years at least. The quest 3 should really have been the quest 2 pro that allows for enhanced visuals because the leap between the two isn't as great as you would think in actual use. The leap between the GO, to the Quest 1 was huge, the leap between the Q1 and Q2 was huge. In my opinion the leap between the Q2 and Q3 even though they say the XR2 is 50% more powerful, isn't that great. Given the fact that the library is built around the two, everything in development is built with the 2 in mind in practice I don't think that power leap is going to be all that important for a while to come.

Changing the resolution to 200% doesn’t make it the same as quest 3, that’s like putting a 4k video on a 720p screen. It just doesn’t compare to 4k video on a 4k screen. As someone who has compared odyssey+ and quest 3, resolution is on a different level. Although you only get to experience full quest 3 resolution if you have a very powerful computer.

@@Vanity7k I play on a laptop with 4090 and 13900k. I can play most games with highest resolution, but my computer is definitely pushed in a lot of games. The quest 3 itself never runs at its max resolution in any game or menu because the mobile processor can’t do it. I think for most gamers, quest 3 is a hard sell unless you are playing vr at least twice a week. With the quest 2 only being $250, it is the clear option for most gamers since you don’t need a computer and can still play all the quest 3 exclusive games. I do wish Meta would go back to OLED like the quest 1, but colors have never ruined my immersion like low resolution has.

It is still in route from the seller so I have not tested it yet but from what I understand it is well worth buying at 100 usd despite being 5 years old. Is there any optional upgrades I could do to maximise my enjoyment of using it? can the lenses be upgraded to a "better" design with a bigger sweet spot as it is small originally as mentioned in several reviews? Would in ear headphone buds be a better choice to the built in ones (if I choose to modify my set) or would I ruin it if I removed the oem sound?

@wingsoficarus113910 ай бұрын
Game recordings aren't going to look close to the actual visuals experienced within the headset due to the headset lenses themselves. Do some more research, see what kind of lenses it has. For example, the Oculus Quest 1 has a very solid resolution that gets hurt by a screen-door effect caused by the way the lenses display pixels. Something like the Pico 4 on the other hand looks almost perfect despite also having a similar resolution due to the newer spec lenses that it has.

Hi is there noticeable SDE on this headset ? There was talk of blur etc can you elaborate? I've heard some people say because of the anti SDE filter you can artificially play games at much higher resolutions or supersampled. Does this compensate it's lower resolutions? and finally how would you rate it's visuals compared to newer headsets? Thanks
@Vanity7k10 ай бұрын
Hello, there’s not too much sde effect but it is there, since you are wearing a vr headset after all. I don’t experience andy blur, and I run my headset at similar resolution as Quest 3. As for the rest of your questions, I mentioned them in the video.
@wingsoficarus113910 ай бұрын
There isn't a real benefit to supersampling your game and has more negatives than positives IMO If you compare the Quest 3 for example at it's native resolution to lets say the Valve Index(similar resolution to the Samsung ) at a supersampled resolution, they will NOT look the same; supersampling isn't going to magically increase the hardware resolution of your headset. Its a good alternative if your game doesn't have good anti-aliasing though. It will smooth out the edges of in-game objects regardless of your headset's resolution at the cost of being much more taxing on your system.
