You are very fortunate to have had such an experience. I think the last time I even saw any type of primate in person was about 45 years ago at a zoo. I have however got to pet a Bengal tiger and got to interact with a killer whale at a show in the animal park. They picked me out of the crowd. They told me to stand at the edge of the water and hold my arms out like I’m giving a hug. The trainer gave some kind of command to the whale and it started swimming toward low in the water. Then it came out of the water and spit water all over me and stuck its tongue up against my face while the trainer made a kissing sound over the microphone. I’d rather be around animals all day than humans.

Strange how some of these keepers treat the baby primates as if they are human babies. Saying "No" and sometimes slapping the baby's hand or scolding them if they did something that the keeper didn't like. This is done to a human child because it will grow up to be a human adult. Why chastise a baby primate when he's going to be let loose in the wild.

@@allgoo1990 "What's the similarity? Are they closer to human eyes than, say, dog's eyes?" well, considering that apes like gorillas and chimps have 97% to 99% identicall DNA with us respectively, you don't have to be an expert biologist to say that there is, in fact, mores similiraty between a human and an ape than with a dog.

@@Joakin93 Sure, that may be true, but bonobos, unlike chimps and other apes, have white sclerae, which we also have and evolved in order to more easily determine the direction of another individual's gaze. Some common chimpanzees do have this, but the vast majority of bonobos do as a result of them being more social than political.

If for a couple hundred years or so people raised bonobos, they would be as adapted to humans as dogs are, and would truly be "man's best friend". And we could communicate with them on the computer or with sign language. And they ane non aggressive and don't attack people.

Charles Watson that is not at all correct...though their temperament is much calmer and they are not as emotionally volatile as chimps they most certainly can be aggressive, they can and and will injure a human..they can and do fight and they also hunt and eat meat including smaller primates and those small deer like animals called duikers..well they eat those poor creatures alive!!

@@solitairecatnaps4444 In the wild perhaps however in captivity, I disagree, once bonobos or chimps reach sexually maturity, 7-8 years they become wildly unpredictable, if not very dangerous they certainly are unmanageable. Consequently they end up being confined to a cage. I can tell you from seeing this first hand this happens in every instance. There is a reason you only see infant or juvenile chimps interacting with humans. It comes down to what is best for the animal, they are best left in the wild, and for those poor souls who do get captured by humans, sanctuary's are the best option. Incidentally these sanctuaries are filled with chimps and bonobos given up from people who made this same mistake

If She grows up around French speaking people. Will she understand English or Spanish?
@koba763
@koba763 3 жыл бұрын
Very likely. When gorillas are raised around humans (not in a zoo) such as the example of Koko the gorilla, she could understand most of the words and sentences that her adoptive human parents were saying. They even taught her sign language (with some tweaks to accommodate her lack of complex motor skills). Bonobos are even closer to humans genetically and have a larger brain in proportion to their bodies than gorillas. They share around 99% of their genome with humans whilst gorillas share only 98%, which might not seem like much but remember, 1% of our genetic code is what separates us, humans, from chimpanzees and bonobos.

I think Eveline was concerned that Kasai would do something to damage my camera. I was just thrilled to be interacting so closely with a baby bonobo. I can assure you that Eveline loved that creature as much as any Mother I have seen loves their own child. When Kasai passed away when an influenza virus swept through the sanctuary in 2012 she was absolutely devastated. I think sometimes when you only see a fragment of a situation we can create a scenario that is not accurate. Eveline spent 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with Kasai

their little bodies must be just very susceptible to influenza. More so than human infants. Does anyone know if it is something about their little systems? Or is it more difficult to treat in them? Or lack of meds to treat them?

Neither. It's because their immune systems are unfamiliar with the pathogens. Adaptation takes many generations.

What happens is poachers will kill the bonobo family and take and sell the babies. As you see they are quite fragile and require a surrogate however as apes grow older they can become incredibly dangerous. All sanctuaries wish that there was no need for them unfortunately at this time the sanctuaries are all overflowing
