Hi Peter. Also just watched you latest on the Leica. While it would be silly to say 'very much like you' I have enjoyed using manual focus lenses on the z6 and z7. I have mainly been using voightlander lenses - enjoy the 40mm 1.2 which I. have used for low light band photography. There is a 15mm f3.5 I have enjoyed for its effect as well. The 58mm 1.4 is a gorgeous lens. What I really like about the lenses particularly the 40 1.2 is being able to work close with people - the form factor is far less intimidating - and for that reason as well my fuji x 100f with a 28 screw in lens is perhaps my favourite. People are actually drawn to the camera - it is non threatening. May not be as much an issue for you - but with my doco - street type - candid work it is very useful. M

What I'v learn over time watching your videos is that being in front of the camera is not as easy as it would seem and the main key for making good pictures (outside the technical) is the relationship between the photographer and the model. And this relationship takes confidence and also time. Thanks very much for that teaching. 👏

Nice shot. Translucent works great in a big space where you don't have to deal with reflected light that much. If you know you'll always work in a big space the umbrella should be fine. Otherwise softbox it is.
@tsilmanav2 жыл бұрын
It is amazing how much a persons face can change when they are working a pose. When you are just getting lighting set up, you can tell she only just needs to stand there. But as soon as the shot means something, she flips the switch and everything comes up. I never really noticed that in other videos because I am usually trying to figure out what you will do with lighting. Great video once again.

Thanks so much again for your tutorial videos from The Master. One question: Does it ever concern you that the meticulous efforts you make to get lighting on chin, soften shadows around one side of the nose, have the hair light corrected for transitions, etc., at THAT moment....will that ever change or does it when the models moves 4 inches left/right? Turn head slightly towards the light or from it...move upper body left or right just tiny bit?! Would that not change all that work you put in because it does not fall exactly as you had set up before they started free flowing? Thanks for you time. Huie (Fremont, California)
@PeterCoulsonPhotographer Жыл бұрын
Thanks, I up the lighting for the wurst angle between the light and Bec's face, so if she turned to her right she would create a rembrandt light and to her left no nose shadow at all, hope this is clear for you

As always, I'm extremely impressed with the manipulation of light and Mr. Coulson you are an amazing photographer! Miss. Pead you are an exquisite model, so expressive with your eyes and demeanor. It's no wonder that the pair of you work so well together. I am a hobbyist when it comes to photography, although I spent a decade as a news camera operator for a TV station in Alberta, Canada. I like to use a C-Stand to hold everything from foliage to create patterns of light on a model, to holding a white board or gold board for fills. I find bringing a couple C-Stands along usually results in better shots when you can prepare and light, especially when you are not in a studio environment. I really like the look you achieve with the Translucent Umbrella Lamps, I will have to track one down for future work. Thanks for explaining as you go, I find it extremely helpful.

Interesting to see the effect (or lack) of the large space on the lighting. I have a translucent brolly but in small spaces it's a bit of a lighting grenade because of the light it sprays in other directions. That can be useful but not always.

Awesome to see you working the shot - In my small home studio lounge i use shoot thrus of different sizes and light bounces off all the walls and low celing giving a fill - in some ways an advantage but when I want more control I use a softbox or reflectve umbrella. One question that hit me while enjoying your video is I vaguely recall you and Bec mention in a past presentation about not focusing on a models eyes/face and purposely avoid a razor sharp, pore revealing image. Is that approach particular to your camera and lens setup and not necessarily something to think about for those of us shooting with actors/models on a more modest/budget kit? Kind regards from London UK
@PeterCoulsonPhotographer2 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much John. No the focusing isn't particular to my camera/lens, you can defocus with any camera and no models want sharp skin, my philosophy is the most important thing in the photo is the subject, then the lighting, then the focus
@mikiyu20012 жыл бұрын
Hello from Canada, I have a question about your light. In the description it says D2 and it looks like it's running on a battery pack. The reason why I'm asking is, that I'm window shopping for new gear and your videos are helping in making decisions not to mention the inspiring factor of one million. Was using a long time ago in Germany "Multiblitz". So if you could go more in detail about your lighting would be very much appreciated.
