Watch this video from time to time. I love Shepard’s energy. So creative yet so mellow and not pretentious like most artists who make it big. Happy to see he’s still around and being paid good money to put up massive works all over the world.

Obey did the right thing 25 years ago when he decided to use the slogan "obey" and he elaborated his main logo\face stencil (the obey one). Elaborating a simple yet long lasting image is not easy. You have to be both skilled and lucky. He realized it and continued in using and repeating it for decades. So the obey lesson is.... Start correctly your project so it will last during years. Respect.

Grew up in Charleston and started skateboarding when I was 11 (1991). Shepard was at RISD at that time. Anyone who knew him, they knew about the stickers. I used to write to him and get stickers for a crazy cheap amount him. I think it was something like 5-10 cents per sticker. I also bought his first t-shirt, way before it was Obey. I think the brand was called Alternate Graphics. These stickers where everywhere in Charleston, due to me and my skate crew putting up them all over town from around 1991-1995. Continued skateboarding into my mid 20’s, but stopped putting up those stickers when I was 14/15. Having known Shepard Fairey, this video is very nostalgic for me. The primary skate shop in Charleston, Big Edna’s (RIP), was very helpful in pushing his brand at that time.

@@kikeheebchinkjigaboo6631 Duck your rumors fool....André the Giant was a real life wrestler, and Shepard made a stencil of his appearance in a newspaper, adding his own slogan to it. 100% original... The obey logo is André the giant, with obey underneath. Obey is inspired from "They Live" where billboardrs change from the usual product advertisement to words like "Obey", "Consume" etc. So he took inspiration from the message of a mind-controlling government portrayed in "They Live", and the real life rise of consumerism in the 80s, combined with his 100% original André the giant stencil, and made it his company logo, with a incorporated message that's possibly the strongest any brand could have (theoretically ofc.), i'd say that's pretty fucking genius man.

Some graff writers opinions are so strange. Illegally defacing property is by definition, graffiti. Is it a throw up or a burner? No, not at all. And to Shepard's point he knew he wasn't going to be part of that graff culture which is why he did what he did. You wouldn't compare Shepherd to Seen or Cope nor should you. But he did something illegal, found a niche, had an audience and legitimized it. That's all "street art" is, it's art produced with that audience in mind. The endgame is the same, the mindset is the same, the only thing that separates it is the final product. Freight writers might hate on street bombers for the same thing but it's the same aesthetic that goes into it. Does Shepard have clothes now? Sure, but Haze did long before that. Is he not a writer because of it?
