Thank you for this clip! :) It reminded me when i was learning/working in the computer service shop 20 years ago and i was exchanging LAN socket on the LAN card. With just normal soldering tips, no hot air, no wick to suck off that excess solder, no sweet jelly flux... just steady hands, quick touch and a strong prayer :D Damn, those were fun times :D

I've seen a few boards like that where the through hole has been ripped out, if it's not going to interfere with the case or shield I add a piece of tinned copper wire through the hole(s) and loop it over the top of the socket then scrape a section of the ground plane clean to solder it to, I also solder the wire to the top of the socket so it acts like a strap.

hdmi port wont be the biggest problem on this. those obvious burned and missing components aside. when you have that kinda savage holes (front holes on hdmi port) in a multi-layer pcb, it will most likely be shorted on any layer.

You should have cont'd tested that bypass cap... if it was shorted, it could've overloaded (or worse, taken down) a voltage rail. Also, I would've put in glue or epoxy in the mounting holes for the HDMI connector, just for extra strain-relief for the solder pads.

I can understand your frustration after seeing something like this, i’d go mad too for sure. But there’s a field for improvement so please forgive me a bit of constructive criticism here: 1. Good move with soldering legs of a HDMI connector from both sides of PCB. I always do that regardless of anything. 2. Other 2 legs that could not be soldered in this case due to damaged pcb holes should be secured with some quick drying epoxy glue (whoever mentioned here hotglue - please...) 3. Good practice of checking if legs were soldered (tweezers method) but the amount of solder on some of them is questionable. That board takes a lot of heat so you should have blown a hot air (preheat) from the bottom of a board while soldering the pads at the top - it would make a solder to stick much better. 4. Lack of a filtering cap maybe wouldn’t be such a big deal but i saw a lot of diodes being damaged within that area which is a bit concerning. Anyways - people if you don’t have a right tools like hot air and a good soldering iron and of course skills do not attempt to do this. When i was doing this for the first time although it’s a fairly easy job it didn’t go as smooth as I thought it will. PCB in this area is one big heatsink which makes things a way harder. Peace!

Could have fixed the other two legs in place with some quick curing epoxy. Either the cheap non-conductive kind of epoxy or the conductive kind of epoxy that contains silver particles if you want to also restore the connection to ground of those legs.

I don’t understand how people try this themselves and don’t stop they just keep going while burning everything on the board. Takes allot of heat to melt those other components. I can’t imagine this was a shop related job. Judging by the film on the top it looks like they used flux for copper pipe soldering and a solder iron to weak to do the job. It’s funny because You tell people what flux to use and solder in your videos, I do t get how people get into so much trouble. Lol
