You do realize that this entire channel is about comparing specs, power, graphics, consistency, etc right? That's the reason the channel exist. When DF have talked about series X and not mentioned other tech, that's with embargoed hardware. If Sony gave them a system, they would be under similar embargo and follow it, and have a reason to make more PS5 content. Once they own both consoles free and clear of embargo the only thing they will do is compare them critically in every aspect. Loading times, graphics, performance, thermals, noise, etc. If you just want to hear Sony opinions devoid of any and all other tech perspective, either pressure Sony to give them a PS5 under an embargo preventing direct competative comparisons or go to channels a different channel on KZbin. Plenty of them cranking out lots of pro Sony opinions while also talking about the tech specs. DF isn't one of them, comparisons is what you should be here to hear.

The Oculus Quest 2 has this feature and can use it as a PC tether (instead of the cable) to quite good success. My worry with PS5 is the SSD is soldered straight to the board and SSDs have a set read and write life. It means there will be a point the console is just dead and will no longer work as the SSD stops working and can't be replaced. @@TristanTheVRGamecat Leakage is just one problem. The others would be degradation of materials and the LM itself and the conductive nature. Still not sure why digital foundry insist on referring to the PS5 GPU as operating under a "boost clock" as the Eurogamer article released after the PS5 spec reveal indicates that the GPU and CPU operate at optimal frequencies when supplied with full power and are throttled to match work load. While this difference may seem minuscule on the surface the design implications are actually quite telling. This power shifting model, as opposed to a constant power supply model used in conventional console manufacturing, means that the PS5 can be extremely power efficient while offering optimal performance based on workload, rather than the other way around. This allows the PS5 GPU and CPU to only work as hard as needed for a particular game or even at a micro level within a given scene. This "work smarter, not harder" approach has some very interesting ramifications in games because the higher clocks allow the PS5 GPU and CPU to punch well above thier weight class while at the same time managing power consumption. It will not be suprising to anyone who has compared faster clocked hardware to more compute heavy hardware that the end result will be that both approaches lead widely to the same performance metrics. It will be interesting to see how PS5 unorthodox power system stacks up to the conventional wisdom, but it will not be suprising if the expectations for power difference are nothing more than people arguing over which two roads will lead to the same destination.

Disclaimer: I use PCs but wouldn't consider myself beyond barely scratching the barrier of a PC enthusiast. But I have burnt down enough PCs to the ground have managed to bring it back to life hurriedly with nothing but shoestring and bubble gum to warrant some guesses/opinions The fan in particular, is the type mainly seen in dedicated cooling machines like ACs and car radiators. The blades on both sides are capable of pushing out massive amounts of air outside from both directions at once. Its essentially doing the work of two sperate fans cooling off a dissected chamber. The SSD, is purely a guess but I imagine the soldered pieces act as a primary (unless the bios allows you to change priorities via settings) so it does all the heavy lifting. The expansion slots mainly just transfer data to the primary as needed. But since we are talking massive speeds of data, heat is definitely an issue. I am guess Sony is relying on its fan to do the job of removing excess heat. I have to imagine the PS5 is design in such a way that there are enough outlets and inlets of holes throughout the system so that the airflow can reach all parts of the system without being obstructed. The liquid metal cooling solution is likely the most dazzling factor. It being able to transfer heat efficiently from the chip will definitely help with games at the start of the generation. It will be interesting to see how this entire design holds up at the latter end of the gen when games surpass the hardware requirements and get more demanding to run. For now though, its likely a little bit of an overkill with that huge heatsink for the games that will be coming out for the first few years.
@njdevil66294 жыл бұрын
The general primary concern I've heard is how will the liquid metal hold up as if even a little leaks out or spreads the console is dead.

If you've ever watched developer interviews you would know that your explanation makes no sense. End of gen games do not "technically" push the hardware any harder than launch titles (especially console exclusives). The difference is they are more highly optimised so can get better performance from the same hardware by not wasting that power doing things inefficiently.
@codethis28754 жыл бұрын
It seems like you don't know much about the PS5. You will be able to play games directly from your m.2 SSD. PS5 will be running in constant boost mode at a fixed power level. that means that PS5 will attempt to boost as high as it can given the provided power(and what they call "model SOC") that means that PS5 will consume the same amount of power(roughly) for each game, regardless of the engine specifics.

There's a lot more to a GPU afaik like TMUs, Gigatexels, TROPs, bandwidth etc. Also, for the record, no it's not a 9.2 TF machine, it will around 10 all the time. The downclocking is for effeciency and cooling reasons. A few % downclocking is enough to significantly reduces thermals, from what I heard. It's a different system to how smartphones and PCs do it. Not to mention, the PS5 has a faster GPU clock speed, which will have an impact on rasterisation.

About the "allowing Japanese hands on experiences before others": Sony probably wants to do the hands on stuff at their HQ, but Japan banned non-Japanese citizens from traveling to Japan for months, not even people with a permanent residence in Japan could get back into the country if they left it unless they had a Japanese passport. Only a few weeks ago they lifted that restriction somewhat, and afaik only people from Singapore and South Korea are allowed into the country now, and only for business (non-Japanese with a permanent residence can return too now). So if they wanted to show the PS5 off at their HQ, there simply is no way to do so to foreigners, unless they are from Singapore or South Korea.

I don't agree with this sentiment. I know a lot of people that are making the switch from MS to Sony this generation to start knowing they'll eventually own both. For many people I know, it has to do with the stock of games due out the first year, and feedback from developers regarding game development and how things have changed with Sony's SSD and 3D audio piece. None of the people I know are basing their expectations off of PS4 sales, though they are looking at the catalog of games the PS4 has as an indication of what to expect this gen.. And really, let's face it, its about the games/experience.

@@AP90x Dude please! You're just saying that because the Series X is more powerful (and this is a hardware channel mostly) or because they cover XB hardware more but that's not their doing Sony has been too tight lipped and MS has been the opposite.
@ardasevmis75834 жыл бұрын
@@orielsy the Xbox is more powerful but likely not by much. It has about 40% more cores but the PS5 has about 30% higher clocks and cores don't tend to scale performance as linearly as clock speed. I expect both to be nearly identical with both basically having the same game settings. Perhaps very rarely the Xbox will have better performance but just barely. They are fairly close. Though I expect the Xbox to run ray tracing better as RT cores are related to core count on the GPU and it does have nearly double the GPU cores.

@@AP90x They couldn't discus the PS5 during the XB reveal because PS5 had nothing out. You yourself acknowledge this. You can't discuss one without contrasting it with the other players in the field. You're talking nonsense here and you know it. Games are reviewed for their INDIVIDUAL characteristics. They aren't going to complain about the same thing across different genres although there may be overlap. A game like Fortnite for example isn't going to get dinged for a lack of realism. Similarly a game like Halo that isn't going for ultra realism isn't going to get the same critiques that a more cinematic game would. In any case you can't review a gameplay reveal like you would a released game. Let Halo Infinite come out before you pass judgement on that.

What I find insane after Sonys video were people comparing about the stand. Like one screw was complicated & you need a tool kit. Those people need to grow up. They had better not ever but any flat pack furniture. Ikea will be out of the question for them. I build boats so this is unfathomable to me that one screw was a half or complicated for someone. I mean they even built a cute compartment. You bring up an excellent point. In the past companies have charged $50 in my country for a stand. Also they click on with physic tabs so getting them off can be a real hassle & you run the risk of breaking plastic tabs off. Especially the older the plastic is. It just didn't seem to matter what anyone does. It can be an improvement over last gen or save them money and they either forget or want something to complain about because that just what people have made into a sport nowadays or they have short memories.

On the whole a great video. One thing though: Could you PLEASE STOP calling the PS5s APU power distribution scheme "boost clock"? That term is already in use with a quite different solution and implies issues that should not be present with the PS5. The PS5 does not boost based on environmental circumstances like PC GPUs do, it instead has a total power that can be distributed differently between CPU and GPU. Actually that distribution isn't really based on a real power reading but on that of a model APU. That makes it a whole lot more predictable and is IMAO a good design choice as with games its often the case that one of these two components gets stressed far more than the other in specific scenes. EDIT: Fix a misrepresentation after freshing up again.

Those things are interesting even for PC only users like i'am. Also i'm not for the pathetic and unfair war PC vs Consoles. But for sure a sort of competition will only have benefits to both worlds. @7MGTESupraTurboA I’m sorry but what greedy tactics are you talking about? And in what way did the 360’s hardware derail potential hardware in the PS3? And it certainly had no effect on Nintendo who were still iterating on their GameCube architecture with the Wii and Wii U. The Xenos GPU was ahead of its time, it had a unified shader architecture before even PC graphics cards had it. The 360’s unified 512MB of memory model was also a better design than the PS3’s ungainly split of 256MB main memory and 256MB GPU memory. The 10MB of eDRAM even allowed for virtually free anti-aliasing and transparencies. The 360 Xenon CPU and the Cell CPU were both developed by the same team at IBM so it’s not clear to me how Microsoft were holding things back there either. The more basic Nvidia card slapped into the PS3 after the Cell’s SPEs failed to perform as a GPU would be a better candidate for holding things back.

The fan on the PS5 is the same kind of fan used on blower-style GPUs, so it's weird to see Richard saying he never saw anything like it on the PC space. On the PS5 teardown video it was even said they built their heatsink in a way that it would work like a vapor chamber, hence the reason why they went with a blower fan.
