By shoehorning movies into their overpriced, redundant format? Or by coupling it with wireless internet in what was the actual worst time for WiFi, a time they changed things to make channels faster but instead sacrificed data integrity for transfer speeds. The only thing worse at the time? PSPGo. What an abomination 😬

The PSP is one of the greatest consoles I have ever owned. Great library of games, internet and other media built in a gaming handheld; truly ahead of its time. A lot good memories attached to the device. Would love to see a newer version of it. But Sony for some reason thinks remote play is the way to go.

They're not doing a portable. Because developers. Don't want. To divide resources. Between an underpowered handheld. And a cutting edge home system. Literally. Fucking. NO ONE. You know what's crazy? Nintendo messed up the 3DS launch so badly, they had to nerf it's price IMMEDIATELY. Sony's response? A more powerful PSP that the west basically didn't care about, and few developers ever cared existed. Switch works BECAUSE it's underpowered enough to stay portable. If I'm making games today and they take twice as long to make as when Vita dropped, I'm not wasting money making a new system just so people can ignore it to buy a Steamdeck 🤷 Only someone lacking literally all business sense would make that decision.

Fun fact: Using good remote software to play your gaming PC anywhere in your house over WiFi using a laptop works surprisingly well. Been using Parsec to remote into my Ryzen 5 3600X build using a Lenovo Thinkpad from 2010, running Linux Mint!

For the early 2000s, the PSP was an absolute beast. Even though I never owned one and would neved have traded my GBA for one, I had a lot of respect for it. 3D graphics of that quality on a handheld was awesome.

Back in my childhood I loved (and still loving) the tech used for the PSP, it felt really cool to put a mini disc inside a handheld! I wish Sony could create a tech using Blu Ray discs but the size of a UMD disc for a PSP 3 instead of the PSQ.

I got my steam deck today and it's been hella fun. The reason I love portable is that it requires 0 space and all I need is a power source to keep it charged. On top of that, what Valve did with SteamOs. I can literally install old fallout games which i love and they just run without excuse. Better than my Windows gaming pc. Low res sure, but as long as it's not pixelated mess i could care less.

A Vita 2 would do SO well right now... the last first party handhelds that fit in a pocket were the 3ds and Vita, there is a whole generation of kids missing out on the joys of throwing a system in your pocket and bringing it with you everywhere, playing locally with kids on the bus. A Vita using moonlight can stream from your pc locally. Since Sony is using pc hardware for its consoles, now that the steam deck is out they should do their version of it, make the developers adapt the library of ps4 and 5 to lower it a notch so the portable hardware can handle it and you have a portable console with two generations worth of back log.

I agree when I saw this project I thought it was so dumb and it's wild how I bet 100% It's going to happen exactly as you say. Switch, Steamdeck, the ever popular trend of modding the 3DS and Vita, making Rasberry Pi consoles, steamdeck competitors etc proves there is still a huge market for handheld game consoles. Sony doing this does feel like a half assed attempt so they can say "oh, well, no one likes handhelds anymore!" as you basically said. It's just weird they're doing it considering how much other companies are cashing in on the market, successfully at that.

My favorite part is how many people miss the core issue. It's not a $200 device. It's only $200 if you already own a PS5 since it does nothing by itself. So to compare it to a steam deck or Nintendo switch you would have to compare it's real price. That being $600 USD ($400 for a PS5 + $200 for the portal).

With the computing, graphics, storage, and wireless options we have today, Sony could literally package all of their classic PS-One & PS2 games in memory and sell a PS Vita Retro and make money hand over fist for people who want to relive their favorite early PS games in a mobile format, but instead they produce something that is useless, proprietary, and something that answers a question that a very small few have bothered to ask. Way to continue to miss that mark Sony! 👍

Actually, they can just resell the launch PS3 which was backwards compatible with much better cooling and more lightweight. I'd say a larger storage device too since these games are old, an HDD is enough, like 4TB. It could come with all Sony first party games (or with a mini store where you could buy them for cheap) and then it could let you use old PS1, PS2, PSP and PS3 discs that you own. I wouldn't care if it was more than 500, I'd get it in a heartbeat.

PS3 emulation is far from perfect, but considering how far its come when the original developer provides absolutely zero support of access to the original binary files, it just goes to show that almost all the technical hurdles of running old games are fully surmountable. It's all about licensing rights. Tracking down who holds rights if anyone still does. Or if those rights have been split up/consolidated/lost/sold etc . . .

@@IsiahM The PSP was a success though, even with the DS overshadowing it, it sold a strong 80 million+ units. Sony definitely does have the capacity to make a good game console, and it could function well as a physical media player or digital media player, but they choose not to.

Sony remote play for their consoles has been around since the PS3 days. You could stream to a PSP or a PSVITA from the PS3. The PS4 and PS5 can stream to the ps vita aswell.

You hit the nail on the head on why Sony isn't going to do it. It's a big investment. Let's not forget that launching a new platform does not only involve production costs, but also a significant amount of overhead, marketing, customer support etc... Sony released a fantastic handheld in the Vita and it was a big flop back in 2013 when there was only one competitor and it was the 3 year old relatively massively underpowered 3DS. The handheld market atm is definitely more competitive than it was when the Vita released, with the Deck and Ally already being machines that can play a bunch of Sony games either first party/third party or via emulation, and obviously Switch being one of the all-time commercial successes, AND a bunch of budget handhelds that can emulate. A Sony handheld could obviously be a huge success regardless, but it would require Sony to be ready to really go all in on it. Judging by what they just announced with the portal, seems like they are absolutely not willing to do just that.

The whole point of a portable console is that you can play it on the go anywhere, anytime and they were cheap but the fact that you need to have a PS5 (which is already an expensive console to begin with) makes it so only people with lots of money could afford it and thats not the worst part the fact that you also have to have both the device and console connected to the same wifi means you cant even take it out of your house this device fails on so many levels that its bound for failure.

I’m on the other side of the fence I would actually use this device. I know a lot think this is stupid and Sony could have just made a Vita 2. I was one of those four people interested in it, but yeah, you've convinced me to not get it. I was considering it because my family insists on keeping my ps5 connected to the main tv, so i end up only being able to use it like one night every few weeks. You bring up a very good point, I'll just use my tablet and a controller instead, especially if it's not going to support Bluetooth headphones. I forgot that was a feature that already exists. I may end up buying it anyway though, just for the novelty, to put on diaplay because I think it looks hilarious. If it flops and they drop the price to under $100.

Bang-on point once again Muta. I had the PSP and Vita. The Vita was very capable, but I just felt Sony dropped the ball with support. The PSP will always be one of my favourite handhelds. Putting custom firmware on that thing and playing good PSP games along side emulation was incredible. I have NFI what Sony is thinking with this weird-ass streaming device. Welp, Deck is somewhere near PS4 when it comes to computing power, Ally and Lenovo's handheld are even more powerful, so technology is definitely there. But man, if Sony would release PS4 Portable for the $400-$450 I'd get it on a flash, and if it could run PS/PS2/PS3 games (locally of course, Deck can emulate all of the 3 platforms easily, Sony could do it too) I'd even be fine with $500 to be honest. No $500 handheld will ever be a killer, especially if the only games released for it are games already available on your non-handheld consoles, if you do that you are cannibalizing your console and SW sales both ways at least to some degree. To ship a console in large numbers, handheld or not, you need exclusives. The Deck/Ally are fantastic devices but they are still niche devices. Many players who are PC players are not wanting to spend 400 USD on a device that plays the games they already can play but is portable. It mainly appeals to a certain demographic of people who either A) do not own PCs, B) have owned PCs in the past but not currently C) Travel often. If Sony wants a slam dunk success of a handheld they will need to treat it like its own platform with its own exclusives. An extension of the PS4-PS5 will by definition have limited appeal. Obviously, they realize this, and since they are not willing to invest all of the time and resources that it takes to launch and support a completely new platform, they decided to go the exact opposite route and offer the PS5- portable extension gamepad the most barebones way possible.

The design of the Portal looks like the old Microsoft XCloud controller cradle mockups that got released, except rather than having it's own screen - you put your phone into it. This is that, with the screen is built in... and it stops working when you leave your house. It reminds me of all those streaming services you sign up for to watch one premier, and then forgot your subscribed and you don't notice it until the next month's credit statement comes in. This thing was obviously shotgunned through R&D in response to Microsoft's XCloud - and then someone higher up forgot to cancel the project it until it was ready to ship, so they're just gonna roll with it.

Actually, according to IGN, you CAN play it around the world because it lets you turn on your PS5 from anywhere in the world (as long as your internet back home is running). Still a dumb accessory though. It's technically a portable PS5 but it lacks features, battery life and is entirely dependant on wifi.

For a while now, I’ve thought the Wii U would’ve worked better if the gamepad could be used as a standalone handheld console; basically taking two different consoles, and giving them the ability to work as one. While it’s not the same, the Switch shows that the hybrid console idea actually *can* work, so I don’t know what the fat cats at Sony were smoking when they looked at the Wii U and Switch, and decided to skew closer to the former. Even more baffling considering the Steam Deck copied the Switch’s homework, and is quite popular.

Once it gets hacked it might be an alright emulation device. I don't think it will be great, but it should do good on older systems. The only problem I have with it as an emulation device is... why would anybody want to emulate on a device that has the dual sense controller built in? If Sony wanted this to succeed, it needs to have games that you can play locally when out of the house(no internet connection required). They could have at the very least made it play digital versions of ps1, vita, and psp games. Then they could have a section of the store dedicated to selling games to play on this device.

you probably missed it, but what is inside that controller, is a device that runs android. There (is* hardware in ther, god know what, but it is in there. Maybe it is interesting to see if people can hack it and see what they can do with it. Outside of that, i think streaming is not supported because it did not get the performance levels people would expect and they disabled it alltogether.

I don't know if it's shady; I think it's a catch-22. If they make a good PSP, the expectations would be huge. It would have to be on the same level as the Steam Deck and have most of the features the Steam Deck has, if not more. The pricing would be difficult. A good PSP would attract most customers to it, and we would have another scalping season. If the price is too high, then people will complain. If you reduce the features to maintain a low price, it becomes the device people don't want.

As someone who doesn’t own a PS5 or want to, the biggest problem with Sony’s current strategy is that you NEED to own a PS5 before you can buy any of their “cutting edge” products. The $500 VR headset and now $200 Portal means you have to drop $400 minimum on the newest console first. Because Sony also “believes in generations” buyers go in with the understanding they’ll be using these products for 5 to 6 more years max before they have to upgrade EVERYTHING. I know what they’re trying (they want to make everyone go out and buy a PS5 for this junk), but its really just increasing the barriers to entry into their ecosystem and its just not sustainable. Right now they rely on their dominate market position and the powerful hold the PS brand has, but they’re building a wall between them and new consumers. Not even Apple makes their products that exclusive to Apple. I’ve largely moved away from Apple (namely from my stage of wanting everything I owned to have their brand on it) because I’ve come to hate their ecosystem and business practices toward consumers, but one thing I consistently buy (on sale) are their way too expensive bluetooth airpod pros because its a solid product I can use with everything I own. Apple has an incredibly closed off software ecosystem, but understands that hardware accessories need to have universal usage right out the box. The portal both isn’t that good and is being advertised as something that only has use to PS5 owners. If they made a modern PS Vita or PSP that competes with the Steam Deck in terms of power and scale, I might have actually bought my first Playstation this generation.

And I just don’t understand why anyone would jump through all of those hoops to dip their foot into gaming when they could just buy a cheaper console or try cloud gaming on their mobile device without needing to drop $200 first, or just go all in and buy the console and return it if they aren’t happy with it? Because at least then, you’d get an actual experience with gaming instead of having your first experience with it be through cloud streaming. I’m just saying that no matter what you do with this, aside from slashing the price bigtime, it couldn’t work because the target audience would be SO small and niche.

@@Croach193I understand your train of thought but you’re overthinking it and not looking at it through the lens of a digital only convenience driven consumer. With the dominance of gamepass it’s fairly obvious that a streaming service with this would succeed in getting subs for people with or without a ps5. If someone just wants to play the PS exclusives they could buy this and subscribe instead of a full console.

What’s the point? The main appeal of consoles like the Steam Deck or Switch are great because they actually work Portable. Internet fluctuates, and relying on it for a portable device ain’t it. The primary use case of a portable device is to use it on the go.
