I just got the portal recently was the only one within a 250 mile radius. Loving it so far. Having no lag issues or latency issues after getting a WiFi adapter that plugged into ps5 and a WiFi Extender plug in the wall. Everything runs flawlessly. Love gaming in bed at night main reason I got it. Hope you’re still loving your Flossy.

Can you explain flawlessly? I just got mine the other day and I definitely get micro stutters. I play through chiaki on my steam deck and get zero stutters, but on the portal I definitely get the micro stutters. I have 500mb down and 500up speeds so it's definitely not my internet, also port forwarded every port I could find online.

I love mine, just make sure the portal is on the 5GHz connection and not 2.4 or you’re going to have a bad time. Most people’s gripes is a result of poor network setups and not the device itself. Also, love how balanced Flossy’s comment section is compared to other “reviewers”.

Couple things it should have: - Ability to use as backup controller on the console. - Sim card slot for true portable gaming for those of us with 100gb+ to unlimited 5G data plans - Ability to link multiple portables to the same console for multi-player gaming.

You can use it as a primary or secondary controller. It's a streaming/cloud device that connects to wifi.. And you know.. hotspots are a thing. You can technically link multiple devices to the same console, you just can't use it at the same time, but you can use both as controllers.

I used it several times that way. Because mine will not wake up the ps5 from rest….at all. All settings are correct. So I have to turn on ps5 like normal with controller log in then I can connect to ps5. Not happy with it.

@@toniodomene You must have some setting off because it can wake the PS5 from sleep. I can wake my PS5 from sleep on PC with "PS Remote Play". I can wake my PS5 with both the "PS App" and "PS Remote Play" apps on my phone without issue. I don't even need the Dualsense controller.

The crazy thing is if you have tablet you can probably have an as good or better experience than this with the Dualshock 5 you already have. There is no secret sauce, it's just regular remote play. This is basically 200 bucks so you can....hold the screen. And not be able to use your existing bluetooth headphones. It's actually a joke, and I back Floss, but it's undeniable this product is virtually pointless and designed for people who don't know any better

Especially as most public WiFi needs a browser to connect/login, so unless you hotspot it, you won't be able to use it

Love the hardware of this device, got one on release day and really loved using this initially, the latency and slight stuttering whilst using the portal is so odd cause i never had lag whilst using remote play on my laptop or phone. Returned it as for me it isn't the best experience when playing games like fortnite or fifa online as remote play runs better on other devices. I hope Sony improves the concept of this device in the future cause it has great potential

I would already own this thing if it wasn't just for remote play. Hardware wise it looks amazing. But not having Bluetooth is another fuck up. So you wouldn't be able to use a PS5 controller and set it on a stand or connect it to a screen o or AR glasses. Pretty limited. I went tiwht the Ally after a lot of research. But damn does this thing *look* sweet

Quick tip for everybody. When buying analog thumb grip covers, do not buy the regular ones for the Sony controllers, buy the ones for the Nintendo switch joycons, they fit perfectly for the ps portal. Highly suggested getting some since the stock thumb grips on the portal wear over time easily just like the controllers for the ps5.

Just an FYI, the Portal won't work with most public Wifis because it doesn't have a web browser to login to their network. You have to use your phone as a hotspot

I don't know the maximum number of SSIDs it can hold.​ BTW, your PS5 and the Portal do not need to be on the same network. I have my PS5 connected via Cat6. Once it's all set up. Your PS5 just needs to be in rest mode. You can turn on the PS5 remotely with the Portal and put your PS5 back in rest mode when you're done.

I got mine it's dope, even after criticizing it at first glance. One thing people always look over is the playstation link, which is a new wireless protocol that minimized lag and latency. Like yeah you can remote play from your phone but i always had latency when playing faster paced games. For example, i can actually play call of duty on the portal with damn near no noticable latency whereas remote play on a phone i couldnt because the lag was too much even on a fast internet connection. And as a family man, this allows me to sit with my wife and kid instead of being isolated at my desk like a nerd lol Its not a product for everyone but for those who find use of it, money well spent!

Great review Floss. This has been on my radar and I am going to get it. My PS5 is connected to the TV in the family room. Usually its occupied by the family watching movies etc. So my gaming is mostly on the PC in the room in the back. But with this I can play the PS5 games next to my router in the back while the family is watching the movies. Excellent review.

I HIGHLY recommend trying out remote play using a laptop/tablet you already have and your exisiting Dualshock 5. There is nothng special about the portal, it's the exact same remote play technology. That way you get an impression on what your own personal experience is likely to be with your network and also if it's worth the extra 200 bucks to be able to hold the display, because this is really the only difference. That and the lack of bluetooth, which is an absoloute deal breaker for me

The PlayStation Portal is simply a device to connect to a play your PS5 games on without the need to download new games or worry about how much memory you have etc. If you purchase it for what it’s intended for you won’t be disappointed if you purchase it thinking it a new portable gaming device that you can take anywhere, you’ll be disappointed. I’m getting one to use it around the house for a few minutes in bed before I go to sleep. I don’t expect it to be a Nintendo switch or a steam deck. It’s just a simple way to play my PS5 games on a handheld in my house. When I don’t want to be sitting in the room my PlayStation 5 is set up in.

I think that's what Sony wants, people just buy a new controller when it wears out instead of seeking a warranty claim. That may have Sony thinking they don't need to make a durable product and people will still buy it anyway... But is wear and tear covered by their warranty??

@@MugiwaraNoDeji iPad and laptop is not always ideal. I use mine in the bed. Laying down with your iPad or laptop is not a comfortable way to play. If I’m sitting up playing I might as well sit in front of my tv.

I genially don't know why Sony didn't just make a proper stand alone hand held gaming machine, especially considering how popular they are at the moment, and then that would attract people who don't own a PlayStation, and who game on PC or Xbox, and as you and others have pointed out, you need good WIFI and a PlayStation. It is a missed opportunity and is not as if they don't know how to make a hand held, that people can take on their travels. This is a limited audience

I feel like this offers a better gaming experience Since all the processing is being done at the ps5 It doesn’t consume battery as fast While allowing higher frame rate with better image quality than what something like steam deck does For example I can play Tlou with 60 fps on it Meanwhile on steam deck I’d have to set it up to lowest settings for inconsistent 30 fps And likely little less than 3 hours of gameplay time Personally I feel like 200$ is a pretty good deal since I can get access to all my games rather than having to spend on a new library

It’s 2023….no one is developing handheld specific games anymore…Its all about playing regular games on the go. Switch, Steam Deck, Ally, all just play the same games, they don’t have any specific games developed just for them. Thats a waste of development resources. There will probably never be another Vita/PSP type handheld again, it just doesn’t make sense, same with a new 3DS. Switch 2 will be another hybrid that can play all the same games.
