Huber's reaction to the State of Play was so insanely OTT lmao. Not saying it was an incredible showing, but i mean it was a *State of Play* - you never really get alot of big 1st party news on those, unless its gameplay of releases which are coming up soon. 1st party reveals are very rare, even for smaller games like Astro so that was even surprising to see here (forgetting about the leak for a second). So Huber only has himself to blame for possibly expecting big reveals like Ghost 2, new IP from Naughty Dog etc. Those things would be at a showcase instead. SoPs are generally showing 3rd party games and fulfilling obligations Sony have with their partners, so this was a very typical show. Its a bit crazy Huber was so surprised by this Feels like he's missing Brad being beside him for these things to balance him out a bit

Damiani has repeatedly claimed in multiple episodes, including this one, that FFXVI "for a fact" had a smaller budget than FFVII Rebirth. However, I couldn't find any articles, interviews, or other sources confirming this. The only relevant information I found were several interviews with Naoki Yoshida, where he expresses surprise that Square Enix approved such a large development budget for FFXVI. I'm curious about the source of Damiani's information. Additionally, Bloodworth mentioned that FFXV and FFVII Remake sold much better than the newer games. While this might be true for FFXV, which sold 5 million copies on day one, FFVII Remake only sold 500,000 more copies than FFXVI in its opening week. FFVII Remake sold 3.5 million copies in its first week under ideal conditions during the early pandemic lockdowns on a platform with a large install base, whereas FFXVI sold 3 million copies in the same timeframe.

To all the Easy Allies crew, but specially Bloodworth or Gaby: I hope you read this and can pass this insight/perspective to all the other Allies when it comes to Final Fantasy and sales. This isn't a correction, it's just a very thought out reasoning why the Final Fantasy games aren't selling as well and I hope this can be passed to the rest of the Easy Allies crew. TL;DR: Square Enix is releasing new Final Fantasy games almost yearly - similar to what Ubisoft did to Assassin's Creed in the past - and people are fatigued by very long annualized games. Kinda Funny Games did a discussion - I believe it was between Blessing and Greg Miller - in a Kinda Funny Daily episode, the one where they were discussing Square Enix's statement about going multiplatform and Blessing brought up what I believe is the most relevant information and point of view to have. Basically, Blessing researched and talked about the release dates and cadence/rate of releases of Final Fantasy games and it became crystal clear that Square Enix was releasing a new Final Fantasy game almost yearly and Blessing likened this to what Ubisoft was doing with the Assassin's Creed games in the past and to what Activision does with Call of Duty currently. In essence, Square Enix basically annualized Final Fantasy. Blessing also touched on the fact that these are JRPG games with a very long story and playtime, suggesting many people are fatigued from them - just like many people got fatigued with the annualized very large open-world Assassin's Creed games in the past. Blessing also brought up the fact that Final Fantasy games used to be very special, like an event, and that this perception has passed, which personally, I have felt it too. Long gone are the days in which the release of a Final Fantasy game was an event and made the whole industry stop and pay attention. This is of course subjective and it will still feel like that to many people, but I suspect that to most people, releasing so many Final Fantasy games in a short time has made them lose some of the charm and magic they held for people. Sorry for the wall of text, but I wanted to convey in detail their discussion and how after Blessing started saying the release dates of Final Fantasy games, it became clear that they have been almost annualized, which helps explain why their sales aren't going as well lately. And of course, the exclusivity to PlayStation consoles doesn't help.
@CRedd98306 ай бұрын
The yearly release argument for why it doesn't feel like an event anymore doesn't make sense. Final Fantasy at it's peak as an event was 1997 - 2004 when it was yearly. 97: FF7 & Tactics (Japan) 98: FF Tactics outside of Japan 99:FF8 00:FF9 01:FFX 02: FF11 (Japan) & Kingdom Hearts (technically a spin off) 03: FF11 on PC in the West & FF X-2 04: FF11 PS2 in the West

The longer development times between mainline games has actually hurt Final Fantasy sales wise more than anything else.

I think it's wild that we're already worried about the end of the PS5 and Series X's respective life cycles, especially given the context of how long the Switch has survived. I think that the suits are all worried about the bottom line, or rather the perceived flattening of that upward line, because they expect all the major, high-budget triple A's to move consoles when the problem is that they are refusing to lower the price of consoles and instead doing what so many other industries are doing as well; rather than lower prices for aging tech, they want to keep releasing new versions of consoles for MORE money while keeping the original versions at, or at least near, their original prices. Restaurants have been doing this forever where instead of giving you a sensible portion at a lower price, they pile on more food than anyone should need for more money. The Allies said it themselves in this episode, so many people are still on Sony's console, it's just that they're still on last gen's console because this gen's are just too god damned expensive and there's no significant price reduction in sight. If they want more people to buy their big games they need to reduce the barrier to entry and let the smaller commodity sell more regularly instead of just being stubborn then crossing their arms across their chests like 5 year olds when consumers refuse to go bankrupt just to keep publishers lines going up. I really wonder how much these suits paid for their mba's because those degrees weren't quality enough for these schmucks to realize that they got bamboozled themselves.

Mario isnt even knows for story, Zelda more and they never had that grandious story anyway. NIntendo does exists outside of Mario and Zelda. For me personally Mario and Zelda arent even their best franchises to play. Also i prefer gameplay over story. Also story doesnt exist only on voicelines and expensive mo-cap. Most Nintendo Ips are gameplay focussed but some have both but they dont exist because they are not named Zelda or Mario or have expensive realistic mo-cap. If a game is not fun to play then i dont care how good the story is.

That is because there is no e3 anymore. People were like "ohh we don't need e3. Glad it went away" But publishers were racing with each other for the best e3 performance. Since there is no e3, there is no competition.

Isla hit on so many interesting points during her rant. I'd long to see an entire podcast just discussing the current consumer/media landscape.

If you could only see the big devilish grin on my face because of the "resting on your laurels" phrase coming from Huber (OF ALL PEOPLE) 😈😈😈 If I wanted to play devil's advocate, WOOOOOOO My thing for the state of play, I wasn't expecting anything big. The Fall and Winter is very dry and I was expecting release dates for those seasons. Personally, I'm eating good this year. I got JRPGs and fighting games. I'm even trying out games I don't usually play (metroidvanias, rogue-likes). That being said I still thought the state of play was a 4-5/10. I only liked Where Winds Meet, Dynasty Warriors Origin and Astro Bot

I don't think it looks like Hoyoverse. That's insulting to Hoyoverse.

2:41:51 Huber is spot on here. Hellblade isn’t for everyone, but everyone who cares about video games should appreciate its existence

Yes being in a single platform contributing factor but Final Fantasy's biggest problem is that fanbase is small and it is not growing. FF13 and FF15 hurt the series so much. Entire PS3 and PS4 generation there were no good mainline final fantasy game. It is around 15 years. And the latest PS5 games looks really unappealing for the people who are outside of the series. When I look at FF7 Rebirth all I see busy work open world stuff and incoherent mini games. Personally I am waiting for it to come ps plus. They have to do something to make it appealing to wider audiences. If f*king BG3 did it, it can be done by billions dollar worth publisher.

Hubers right though. This SOP was not great. Infact Playstation is probably the most boring company for me these days when it comes to show stuff off. Nintendo and Xbox has better "conferences" by far.
@theoakty92426 ай бұрын
Playstation no reason to buy a console, Xbox just going downhill and corporate, Nintendo need new console and more hardcore ips. And dont let me talk about companies like ubisoft etc. Gaming is so bad nowadays this gen is a farce and everyone should stop supporting these companies for a time being. You can easily play amazing indie games with passion behind them.

I think this gen is fucked. They will release max three first party games and everything else will be crossgen with ps6.

Not for xbox though, this show case is going to be so much

The economic headwinds dude. Cost of living just continuing to worsen means I can't justify spending on entertainment. My deepest apologies to Square Enix.
