Ghost of Yotai is a tossup. Sure, O find it "meh" when a woman is depicted as a spec ops super samurai in a realistic fiction setting(in a fantasy like setting its not immersion breaking because there is a proverbial "firearm" as magic, as in "Colt made them equal). The concern is more so the implementing of a female protagonist and the devs sought out a radical tr@ns activist as a protagonists VA, they recently hired multiple "pronouns in bio" activistic developers, and multiple writers from Ghost of Tsushima are not involved wifh this project. Did they make a name with themselves with the first game, and are trying to capitalize on that by maximizing ESG financing to try and make a larger second installment? Im more skeptical than hopeful right now. P.S. preemptively, if some weebo wants to argue the "but muh female samurai", Tachibana Ginchiyo was a terrible leader and samarai, and was only given those positions because her father had no son. She was betrothed to her adopted brother Muneshige by her father before he died because Dosetsu wanted him to the the leader of the Tachibana clan. Ginchiyo lost any battle her and her "female samurai" riflewomen fought in, inclusing losing the family castle to a rival clan. She divorced Muneshige once he took full control of the clan, becane a buddist bunnun, living with a farmer and died in destitution at the age of 34. Dynasty Warrios is not real history. Wikipedia is not real history. P.S.S. the source Roze has in the description is an article primarily referencing western historians referencing folk lore and legends. The quotes are quotes of "someone at some time said so and so was a great archer". This is why half the primary sources are "unknown". That source also use S.R. Turnball as a source. He is notorious for not sighting his own sources, as well as using literary narrative to tell history. He wrights stories about history. He has received tons of criticism for potential plagiarism, and publishing works without citing sources. He has received major criticism for his telling of Japanese history, especially that of the Sengoku period and Samurai. I'm glad Roze posted that source. I need to look over the "historians" cited, and why almost NONE of the sources are Japanese lol.

Oof. That Jstor link. Diana E. Wright is a feminist, "independent" historian. Typically I would prefer an independent historian, but not when you belong to an organization called "Women Also Know History" lol. We already know that. My girlfriend knows more history than I do, and it's one of the reasons I started dating her.

JSTOR link: Stephen T. Brown - has worked as an editor for "Women and Performance" Its full name: Woman and Performance: A Journal Of Feminist Theory I'm sure there is 0 bias in either the PDF source or the JSTOR source on the historical account of "female samurai. I learned so much researching those sources! BTW, Thank you for actually posting some sort of source on female samurai. Most of the discussion on it take a position of pre-supposition, as though it's a well established fact. That is not the case. Sure there may be one or two stories that could be true, but is highly, highly unlikely that there were any truly notable female samurai. I'm sure there was multiple notable female kunoichi. We just don't know about then because they were good at their job. Even today one of the major forns of murder carried out by women is poisoning. Femake kunoichi makes logical sense. A female swordswoman makes zero.

@@hardbrocklife Hey man, I edit many of the 2nd channel vids so I added those links. I must admit I didn't put in the level of research that you did lol - I just trusted scholar, which is something that I shouldn't have done blindly in hindsight. IMO I would find it believable if there were rare cases of female warriors in Japan, not necessarily 'samurai', but as you said, the sources out there are inconclusive at best. When it comes to the actual game ' Ghost of Yotei', I've played GoT and it was a banger game so I trust sucker punch, as long as what they show makes some kind of sense within the story of the game. For example, from what I've read, the region where the GoY is supposed to take place in, didn't have that many organised clans and samurai's, instead it was composed mostly of wandering warriors, which perhaps would've had a lower skill level/ level of training than enemies in the first game. If the game doesn't show the female MC easily outmuscling the enemy warriors I wouldn't really have an issue with it and from what I've seen so far it wasn't done for the usual DEI bullshit that we encounter in other games, but rather just as an attempt to tell a different story. That being said, it would be VERY disappointing if we discover that they just did it to please the woke audience, as it would be a great franchise wasted. I'd love to hear your thoughts.

As long as Sucker Punch does the logical thing of "hire the actor for their acting and not their view" I think it'll still be a pretty alright game. There's so much DEI fatigue these days anyway, Sucker Punch must really lose their marbles to try anything funny. If it's just so happen that they hire Erika, whatevs. She has acting chops, keep her views out of it.

there were female warriors that had long spears as weapons to defend villages while the men were away at war. I think they were called Nobushi or Bushi

Some japanese streamers I've been watching were saying it's gonna be like a revenge tale of the woman who's like a surviving member of an esteemed family. That's why she has nice clothes and stuff, and probably trained due to being a family member, not because she's a samurai. Also her yellow clothes has massive Kill Bill vibes. Hope that's the direction it's going.

I didn't think the Dishonored sequels were bad (gameplay wise, because adding a 2nd and 3rd character with different powers to Corvo was really hype and really fun) but the writing definitely soured as they kept building the world. I don't think it's even a problem that you played either Corvo or his daughter, it's that the writers just became so creatively bankrupt after Dishonored 1 and its DLC expansion and they basically brought back a supposedly dead villain to screw with Corvo (and his daughter) again. And I think the worst part was the 3rd game, Death of the Outsider, that not only destroyed all the mysticism regarding the game's Powers, it also ruined Daud as a character. Man I hated the narrative of the 3rd game, and it's not even because Billie was a woman, they just became bad at writing. And then Arkane Studios is dead now after 2 more mediocre games. Wonderful.
