Aloha. I made this yesterday. We really don't like the flavor of liquid smoke, so we just used alaea, and ti leaves from the yard. To help with a smoked flavor, we charred the pork pieces in bacon fat, deglazed the pan with a smokey scotch, and poured that into the baking pan. It turned out delicious! Your rendition really helped us figure out the direction we wanted to go. Mahalo!

@@playswellwithbutterYes! Even better if you can find ti leaves. Luckily, they grow pretty well here in Southern California. I also use coconut milk instead of broth or water

Hey cuz, I miss traditional Kalua pork. When I was younger, I in California and we had two luau’s. We dug a pit, and mind you. We lived below, sea level so we couldn’t dig very much because we would end up hitting water. were in low level land, so we cannot dig very deep because then we would hit water. we use the banana leaves and we got some lava rock and we used a whole pig head and all. We dug the pit the night before, and had an oyster bake. The next day we dug up the pit, remove the banana leaves and the lava rock, and it was so tender so juicy so fall off everything. It was Ono.

I found this recipe on your website. It was so good. I searched out your KZbin channel just to leave a review. This is an amazing recipe. You make it so easy thank you. To anyone making this dish, it is worth the trip to the Asian market for the banana leaves. This pork turns out beautifully an instant pot.

Just made it in instapot for my Hawaiian friends and people who just traveled from Hawaii. Here is what I do with the juice on bottom of pot. Sauté the cabbage in the drippings (chop cabbage, drop in instapot, then set pot to steam 2 minutes) and then mix in the Kalua pork. Serve over rice. 😋🙏💪🌍🌏🌎❤️🇺🇸🖖

You know, it's funny, I was watching thinking "Man, where am I going to get Banana leaves in Minnesota" and there you have it! I'm fortunate enough to live within about 5-10 minutes of like 4 asian grocery stores ha! Definitely going to give this a try this weekend. I've only had Kalua pork once before and it was pretty mind-blowing. Definitely have to make it for a friend who spent a few years in Hawaii too.

I agree... without the leaves, it just doesn't have that kalua pig flavor. It is THE unique flavor (aside from th smoke of course) that gives it that certain taste. I get mine at a local Asian store and just keep them in the freezer. They literally last years in the freezer!!
@playswellwithbutter9 ай бұрын
totally agree! without them, it's just smoky pulled pork! :)
