I like this format better than the regular vocab episodes. For people, who are not complete beginners and have a couple of thousands of words under their belt / ~intermediate level, this is much more enjoyable and efficient. So both formats are really useful, but it is nice to see a bit more content here for a slightly more advanced folks as well. Cheers!

I love this format! it's faster paced, which, as other people said, is nicer for intermediate viewers. in addition, your personality shines a ton more, which makes this series even more enjoyable. also, I love the idea of following you through an entire game. as much as I love the vocab videos, I'm always left wanting more from a game. Yeah, I could play it myself, but it's fun to watch you. You brought up pokemon at the end which is a great example of a let's play series many of us would watch :)

I really liked this format! Some of my reasons: 1. Honestly, it feels like about 80-90% of a full vocab episode in terms of language explanations. If it's 10 times easier for you to make (and you could therefore make more of them in the same amount of time) it feels like a no brainer! 2. Im probably around an N3 level, so i really appreciate that you barely touch the most basic vocab and grammar. It feels like you can get into the meatier parts of the language which most channels never tackle. 3. Its very encouraging seeing you work through a game in real time. When even someone as fluent as you can find unknown words, it helps to reinforce that you will never know everything, and thats clearly ok! Great video as always. Looking forward to the next one!

I am a viewer for quite a long time and I would really love to see this format more often - what I would love even more is something like a lets play of a whole game (depends on how many people like that), where we can fall in love with the story while learning and enjoy your "lets play". I often had that feeling that i would have loved to see more after finishing a vocab episode. On the "berserk" one for example - right after it i went and looked the movies because i wanted more of the "story" - if it is easier in this format I would highly apprecite a "lets play XYZ" format on a weekly basis.

great video! my literal goal is to be able to play all the classic JRPGS in their native form so your channel is the place for me! These videos will be awesome just seeing them being played. Great vid and great new format! I really hope that you stick with it because it's really enjoyable and if it makes your life easier, it's a win-win in my book. It's like watching a friend that knows about the language play, with the bonus of having your knowledge of the language to understand the context better. About the game, it was easy for me to want to buy a Sakaguchi and Uematsu game, but the video convinced me to pull the trigger with it and try to make an honest try at playing it in Japanese! I agree with everyone that this format makes it much easier to learn while also observing gameplay simultaneously. It's an approach that many people can benefit from without feeling overwhelmed. Additionally, this game definitely has a Final Fantasy vibe.

Already way ahead of you 😎 Playing with no furigana feels like the day my mom took the training wheels off my bike but it’s actually going pretty well. Helps that the game is great. The memory sections are the hardest by far but everything in between those is smooth sailing

I don't know how much you'd be interested in playing through full games, but if these videos are so much faster to make, you could possibly treat it as some kind of "translation lets plays"? Obviously, that would still take longer than just playing through it normally without all the breakdowns, but I am still sad that we never got to see the full final fantasy 7 remake story from you, which started the channel. I'm all for you having to do less work and I can still easily follow. If it really was too quick at some points, I could still pause or rewind and check again. Also if you want to have more uploads, you could also make the videos half as long and just release them twice as often? Anyway, I really enjoy all the videos you're doing and will keep watching them, no matter the approach you're gonna take!👍

Hi Matt. I wanted to comment on the format, but also the ending of this video jumped out at me for another reason. So, sorry for the really long comment. I do think overall a good format -- but it might even be worth fleshing things out conceptually more. With these more informal videos being perhaps split into different levels? That going over every word feels good for beginners, and this being slightly harder than regular Vocab videos makes it better for Beginner+. But I wonder if there would be a way to walk a fine line to do this easier style for other levels as well? That depending on difficulty level set from the start, there could be more letting easier lines go. With still diving into any more interesting stuff. Or perhaps if one game got multiple entries, each episode could let some of the more commonly built up words and phrases go by without pause more. To both cover more content, but also allow people to test themselves progressively more as they get more comfortable with this particular entry. Again, likely hard to do the right balance for that type of thing. But I have been very fascinated for a long time how to do content aimed at more levels. Heck, maybe even long enough down the road or like once a year a very rare video like this purely in Japanese? Perhaps a crazy idea. But to circle back to the ending. As someone with video editing experience, I could already pick up you likely are a bit slower or maybe more methodical in the editing bay. However, something about 15 hours for this type of video feels really off to me. And not to armchair editor things, but I used to have a 2:1 editing speed for this level video editing. Which was before getting a lot more of the fancier tools that exist nowadays. So I’m wondering if you have implemented some of said tools that might help speed things up? Like do you have an Auto Editor Program? Or more technical terms something that can automatically apply non-destructive cuts to a timeline based on perimeters you give it? Most of the better software like this are paid plugins, but because of the time they save are generally worth the price. You can after fine tunning it set things to auto cut down footage on the timeline based on sound levels. So, have it were if you aren’t talking or if a character isn’t speaking it will auto cut things. And if it ever cuts too far or you want a lead in, you can just drag out the clip a bit for extra breathing room. Not to say it makes a video like this instant. You would still want to clean and polish the trimming a bit. And if you aren’t used to not making mistakes or “thinking” (not derogatory) before you speak it can take a little while to get used to it. Macros are also really good, if you don’t use them yet. And if you do -- you can always use more. For example, if you are post processing your audio, but haven’t set up a 1 click macro to do the processing then that saves a decent amount of time. (Of course setting up preprocessing on your audio saves even more time). And if you have very common edits that are frequently made, you can find some creative macros which can help speed them up. [Like certain projects require cutting at particular intervals. So setting a macro that auto cuts the footage at the exact intervals you want can save minutes of time. You could then - if for instance, wanted transitions on each interval, include that onto the initial macro. Meaning, something that would be 10-20 minutes of busy work becomes 1 click.] Not all things can be as easily automated. But I have found over the years, that you can progressively find outside the box solutions which have the same result for less time investment. Again, I really don’t mean to be coming off as rude or telling you how to do things. Just that 15 hours doesn’t sit right with me. Not to say I don’t understand it. Like if the process was done without speed ups, than it would be at least 5 hours of editing. And I have another editor friend, who simply is just very slow while making edits, who probably would take more like the 10-15 hour range. Just that I feels like there are ways out there that can for sure speed things up by a lot.

I think one problem with the typical vocab videos is the amount of english compared to Japanese in the video. I feel like there is too much english in the videos and not enough japanese to make full watch throughs really worth it for me. Replay value is also really low since I will mostly hear english during the video playback. This is probably why i prefer the grammar videos which address things that aren't so easily looked up. Perhaps more chunking of the language in the videos would be better as well. Another idea might be videos that focus more playing with explanaitions actually being in Japanese and maybe just english for more complicated things while adding english/Japanese companion scripts for people to be able to review with. This way would likely get content out faster since there would be less video editing while providing people the ability to choose the level of training wheels they want/need. It would also likely make the whole video have a greater deal of replay value as then the listening practice is the whole video.

I wish Kamui had a free version (with limited features of course). Paying 200$ for something that's not even 100% accurate is not worth it.

It has a trial version and a $5 monthly option, but I agree, ideally there would be no sub model at all and instead supported through Patreon/donations or something. That way is can be widely used by the Japanese learning community (unfortunately Google charges for the OCR use though)

@@GameGengo I tried that trial version before and was very disappointed. It only gave me around 20 tries and then stopped working unless I paid for it. What irks me the most is that Yomininja does everything that Kamui does but it's completely free and open source. So I just don't see any reason to use Kamui over Yomininja. (BTW, I'm not judging you or anything for using Kamui. Just stating my own opinion over it)

While I love your vocab series immensely, this type focused on getting more slightly "lower quality" immersion, but MUCH faster I think is truly the distillation of your method of learning. I must say please do not do a daily video, while I would certainly watch them all, I just can't see that kind of hardcore grind to be good for you (Matt the person) in the long run. But, you should absolutely keep up this style. Possible improvements: Doing the whole auto OCR thing you were talking about, so when there is a auto dialgogue thing (such as the giant exposition dump when you warped) you'd still be able to examine it for us. I think this format shouldn't be used for ones that the story especially matters, or tend to have a lot of jargon or other things that requires looking up or thinking about obscure things,, such as the yakuza terminology in the Yakuza games, or the constant jokes in the Ace Attorney games This is just a me thing, but I think it'd be nice if you included the editing time in the description. I appreciate when you say it at the end of videos since I'm a little data gremlin xp but it's easier to parse in the description and fits this type better since, I think that outro was recorded at the same time as the rest of your recording I'm also particularly interested how much easier this style is time wise... Just went back and saw you flashed it at 1:22:54 as 15 hours thanks. End of improvements, now I have 3 questions I want to ask: First if a person comes across a game script, or makes one themself that's not on your website's list how would they send it to you? Unfortunately the discord server or dm would be easiest for me personally but that's a membership thing which we can't exactly justify at the moment (sorry). Second, Are there any limits on the types of games you would accept for that list? As an example I have this game that is a free small fan-game in a niche community around a brutally hard platformer, I could definitely understand the perspective of it being too niche to be on your list, so any restrictions you have on the list would be nice to know (not just the ones that affect the example) Third, I'm getting to the point where I'm considering switching to a J-J Dictionary, would it be possible to give a list of recommendations? Also would there be any pop up dictionary similar to Yomitan, Rikaikun, Nazeka, etc for J-J, I'm on Firefox. Thank you to anyone who made it this far and have a great one, don't burn out :D
