It's raining. It's pouring. And Randy made Pollux a tent! Do you think it's the Huskey in Pollux that makes him love being inside small spaces?
@msr11163 жыл бұрын
I think it's the den environment of their ancestors, huddling together for safety, warmth and protection from the elements. Plus, everybody likes to have a private space that's only theirs, like guys with their man caves. Come to think of it, some of the men I met during my dating years definitely shared some traits with wolves and cavemen.

Excellent idea. I actually bought a "mesh" crate, cus I didn't like the metal. It's pretty big. My dog is small and she LOVES it. I have already left her in my room when I went shopping... and when I got home, she was so cozy and happy inside with her big pillow and cotton sheet. Honestly, it was like 20 bucks and she is just fine with it.

My rescue (he’s my avatar) also has lots of Husky in him and does the same thing when it storms-he hides in dark, tight spaces or under the guest bed. I’ve done the same thing for him with a makeshift blanket fort next to the sofa. He loves it. I also looked for dog tents and found they were too small or too big. There’s a place on Etsy called Tucson Teepee. I bought a teepee from them a few years ago as a fun adult space. They custom made it for me. It’s huge! But I’m guessing they could make a custom Pollux teepee for you. You could even pick the fabric!

Love the tent that Randy built. Reminds me of the tents my sister and I would build in our bedroom when we were young. My two girls (dogs) both like to squeeze between the couch and the wall, even though it’s tight. Sometimes I will find toys back there too, like Pollux. They were both rescues, terrier & Chihuahua (possibly) mixes. One likes to crawl under everything EXCEPT beds. Maddie can be found under pillows, blankets, sheets, etc. even in the summer. All of my Chi mixes liked to bury. I think it is is a security thing. Renee, I enjoy all of your videos but the dog ones are the best! I volunteer for 2 animal shelters and rescues are my favorite. I can’t believe that Pollux was at the shelter for so long. He’s a beautiful boy and doesn’t seem to have a lot of emotional baggage as many shelter dogs do. It’s always a gamble (isn’t everything in life!) but it so rewarding. He was meant to be with you and your family and he has the best life now. Thank you for adopting and sharing him and Maxxi with us. Randy, you look great and I’m so happy that your surgery went well and all is good. Thank you for sharing your experience. Love you guys❤️❤️

Love the tent idea! My furbaby loves to take naps in his dog crate. We put his dog bed inside it and he has a blanket and toys to cuddle with too. We put a thin fleece blanket on top of the crate to cover it on all sides except for the entrance. We took the door off so he can come and go as he wishes. He loves to be in there when we're all in our living room hanging out. At night he sleeps in our bed with us. Another idea is to buy a "End Table Dog Crate" from Amazon or Wayfair. They can get pricey, especially for the large size, but it does look a lot nicer in a living room.

I love the thumbnail you chose for this video. Pollux has the biggest smile on his face. What a lovely boy. Anyhow - I wanted to comment on this topic. We had jack russells and they loved their hootchies. They had a variety of different little houses and they loved them all. If I can find the names of the houses - I'll pass it on. Pollux is a bit bigger, but I believe the houses came in bigger sizes. The one they used the most were made of heavy cloth, with a zipper opening/closure in front and in back. At first we kept the front opening rolled up and velcro'ed out of the way because they were constantly in and out. But later, we took a pair of scissors and cut the door off permanently. Those houses became their private little space, and like Pollux, they took their toys in there, they played in there, and they slept in there. Their muffin beds fit inside perfectly. They also had a soft igloo type hootchie I found on-line. This lady made these beautiful igloos, and those we didn't put their muffin beds in there, but we did put a soft bed in there. They absolutely loved them. Like I said, if I can find the manufacturer of the first one, I'll pass it along. In the meantime, I hope you find just the right hootchie for Pollux.

***I joined WW and am doing it with you - y'all!! Thanks for the inspiration Renee*** I used to sell custom furniture. It usually took 3 months, sometimes longer. As I used to tell clients: It's worth the wait - AND you get other things done during that time (cleaning, paint, carpet, new accessories, etc etc). I use a large dog crate for my Golden and he loves it. It's in a corner, with a nice blanket over the sides and top. I leave the door open, so he is free to come and go. He, too, is afraid of storms. His bed fits inside along with toys. This is his den.

I had a rescue that preferred to sleep under the bed. The rescue I have now likes under the dining room table. I think a rescue has gone through an insecure event no food water or shelter & they don't even realize they are insecure, they just feel safe. And I adopted a half coyote puppy once that really denned up behind a chair in a corner and I couldn't get him out because he became viscous defending his spot. And he was only about 10 weeks old. That's a story with a sad ending, he was viscous toward the hand that fed him & he had to receive mercy. The point is I have seen denned up for real & the security of a small space is actually very different from a denned up wild animal. Pollux will probably feel safest under the bed for the rest of his life, just make sure he can always get to that spot and you won't need tents or anything else.

you could also make one use PVC pipes and cutting them to whatever height/width you want and putting them together with PVC connectors that just fit right in to one another. then put whatever material you want on it. You could even cut out holes in the material to slide over the PVC pipe to hold in in place. That way you could change out the material during hotter and colder weather. Just an idea. I did that for agility training and it works great. Lightweight and cost effective!

I love the homemade tent, but I have seen end tables that are specially designed for pets to sleep under. Maybe you could design your own, like a rectangular box style.
@dgator35993 жыл бұрын
Just buy a crate. You can buy a cover to go over the top and 2-3 sides (they roll up and have ties) or just use a sheet. The door doesn't have to be attached either. I have a raised Kuranda bed that goes into the crate with her foam bed on top so she doesn't have to lie on the hard surface of the crate floor. Some people just have their dogs lie on the Kuranda bed without a cushy bed on top but mine loves the softness. Dogs love having that safe little cubby of their own.

I made a kennel from a vintage end table. Took the doors off. For my dog I needed a gate to lock him in at times so I added a metal garden border, hinged on one side with a latch on the other. If you can find a cabinet type end table just do a simple little diy taking the doors off and you will have a nice dog box for Pollux. More info? Pic? Send me a DM!
