I just bought 4 Chinese Imari plates from an auction house in upstate NY, listing "antique" Chinese Imari plates. Thinking nobody would bother making reproduction Chinese Imari, which is not expensive, I bought the plates and they were shipped to my home. Guess what, they are fake reproductions. Thanks for the video, for a new collector, it is an eye opener.

Thanks for another great video. Whats true for Asian art is usually also true for other art. Just as example, even if it should be a real Monet or Picasso, if its not in the catalog de raison it wont get accepted and wont be valued as anything but a copy. As you repeatedly have pointed out, virtually all these markets are now extremely efficient, and there are a lot of people always watching.

Very true about keeping a low profile if you don't want to get robbed.

Thank you. What a shame that the market gets flooded with fakes over time and getting worse, it is a crime to sell fakes under the guise that they are genuine antiques. Your lecture is very interesting and timely.

They’ve been making reproductions in China for centuries, by the way. This is not new. They’re just using Auction platforms as a tool nowadays, to sell the reproductions.

Whatever happened with the controversy with the Rob Michiels sale last year? There were quite a few conflicting opinions on whether some of the items were fake or not. How did it play out?

Peter, interesting that Massachusetts says they have no jurisdiction over Internet sales auctions, but I bet they insist on collecting sales tax whenever there’s an auction win that’s shipped to a Massachusetts buyer.

Thanks so much for doing what you do. You call it just as it is! That takes some nerve, conviction and knowledge. I've been involved with antiques and like most, learned the hard way many times over many years. There were a lot of fakes, but the amount was a fraction of what's being sold today. I feel SO sorry for all the innocents out there who are taken in by unscrupulous auction houses! We can only hope they stumble upon your channel before they make a mistake.

"You were screwed over," that's succinct, but as I was once told, "you should drop the succinct, it's redundant." Thanks for the laugh.😂

Empire still has a store front in Boston. Not sure if they are still active though. When I was going to grab some things from Grogan’s auction of the Armenian brothers collection I saw the building. I even snapped some photos of the “rare antiques” in the window.

Thank you bringing forth this information. Chinese copying of foreign and domestic porcelain has been continuous since merchants were trading via wooden ships. They are very craftyy . Chinese faked English blue and white dishes. This copying is now related to everything ie. Cell phones. Buyer's choice .

Also famous auction houses sell the most fakes, all objects look like new, made today or yesterday. Several hundred years old objects look as if they were unused. Always buy what you like.

Wouldn’t it be nice if one could just carbon date an item instead of having to rely on someone’s opinion...

Important and well-known porcelain experts cannot even agree among themselves. One of them says authentic while the other says modern. You said that there are no vases like this for some of the vases I sent you pictures of four years ago. I saw the same vases in a museum in Taiwan. You say that only big auction houses sell real ones. This is not true,Everyone knows, please do not mislead people.
