Hey Ben don't worry about going to Liberia, it's not going to be nearly as scary as you think! Back in something like 3rd grade I moved to Kenya from the US and before I went I thought Africa was all just desert and people walk around naked with gauges in their ears and lions would walk in your back yard and that there were no grocery stores or movie theaters etc etc, but it's actually not too different from here (ok it's very very different on a surface level but on a deeper level we are all very similar) there's a lot of very nice people in Africa and they are happy because they know what's important in life unlike consumerist America where the idea is that happiness stems from what you have. Like when you give them school materials they get so happy and it's not just because they got a a book and a pencil, it's because they are excited to just learn! anyways I don't think you have to worry, I think it will be a great journey. there definitely are people who will try to take advantage of you and get your money but that's because they are struggling to just get by. Think about what would you do if you met a billionaire walking down the street, it's the same thing to them. have a great trip though, I can't believe the way this channel started with sending poop to people I Liberia and now helping them out. What a crazy outcome. classic...

Really? Just going for a couple of days? I think you might end up regretting that and want to stay longer. Also, I've never been to Liberia, but have been to Sierra Leone and Malawi and have never had any security worries. Be sensible, but not overly protective and paranoid. Speak to everyone, enjoy your work and have a good time!

Agreed, you should've stayed for a few weeks. Realistically all you need is some imodium a-d and you're good to go! I've spent months in some Central American countries that look similar to where Joel lives.

My area of expertise is GIS (mapping), however our gear was held by customs for over a month so ended up doing a lot of excavation at first. Looking back it was kind of like being in prison, manual labor six days per week, almost every meal consisted of only beans/rice, I legitimately lost 18-20lbs. Dealt with bats flying through the house at night, spiders the size of a fist, rats, snakes, scorpions, and mosquitos. Surprisingly no-one contracted Dengue/Zika. All-in-all it was a great experience I'd definitely do it again!

We are so waiting for your update. U are a liberal/libertarian hero, and I say that as a Swede. As proud as I am of our welfare I get it that we are a country of 9 million people and our rules might not work in a bigger economy. As a social science student I really respect your approach to self sustainability and a distance from the NGO programs that sometimes might damage more than help. My goal is to be a NGO worker, but I believe in your approach of self help and non direct aid, after a century in Asia I have seen how corruption will take over direct aid and I can't believe in it anymore.
