Please Do This With Your Horses! How I Desensitize A Horse To A Plastic Bag (3 Steps)

Horses that spook and jump and react are just following their natural instincts. In the wild those instincts are what keep horses alive. In captivity however, those reactions can be dangerous especially when horses are near people or in fenced areas. Desensitizing exercises like this one are a valuable and important investment into your horse because they help him learn to be calm and relaxed around "scary" objects. Plastic bags are a great tool because they're very cheap they make a lot of noise and are readily available. So grab a bag and go make your horse safer! 😊

Great tips in this video! When I’m sacking out or desensitising my horses to a flag or a plastic bag or whatever it is, I’m always careful flap it more in front of them at first, because going straight to the side with it puts the object in more of a blind spot and tends to have a bigger reaction. I’ve noticed both of my horses have less of a negative reaction if I first start moving the object or creating noise with it more to the front and side of them, before moving it back.

hi, ive done this with my horse and he did very well. Just 1 question, does this mean he is now desensitized to most things on a trail ride or does it just mean its specific to the bag. do we have to de-sensitize to every item they might encounter on the ride?

Hi! Great job doing that with your horse! Every item you desensitise your horse to the better he will get with scary objects. There’s no way to desensitise the horse to anything he may be afraid of but the more you can do the better prepared he will be. I always desensitise to a bag, a large tarp and the ropes and sticks I have. Other things could be hats, balloons and signs. Just keep working with him and he’ll get better and better!
