I'm pretty sure this kind of behavior is isolated to my era which is probably for the best because...Wow. New Goths came to events for the first time, wide eyed and bushy tailed and temporarily went feral. I feel like it's a combination of that excitement of discovering something new. The work you had to do to find a molecule of things pertaining to it (music, events, fashion etc), immaturity (hey, we were kids after all), hormones and some other fun and interesting things that created the chaos we sometimes saw when everyone got together. Babybats are always concerned about how they will be perceived/treated once they're old enough to integrate. Worried about the veterans and OG's accepting them and when I look back on my own experiences I think, we'll if we were anywhere between 1990 and 2000 the only people you have to worry about are other babybats because the first 1-3 years we were all a bit nuts. It wore off, we calmed down but fortunately for babybats today it seems more indicative of the period and not something you see today...Thank goodness!

23:33 I made a similar mistake when I saw The Mission last year. Although they are a goth rock band, I didn’t really think about the fact that they’re from the 80s and who their primary audience would be. I get to the show, gothed out in a black velvet dress, fishnet top etc. and lining up, I notice that it’s just a sea of middle aged men in t-shirts and jeans. I was so overdressed. On a positive note, I stuck out from the crowd so much that Wayne gave me his guitar pick! He didn’t even throw it into the crowd, he got off stage to give it to me specifically which is really cool.

I feel like one of the reasons a lot of elder goths were a bit gatekeepery is because they're uncomfortable KNOWING there are underage kids at the club and it's their way to make them go away. Can't speak for people now but I've been to 21+ events where drugs were being done and a 14 year old just playing on their gameboy in the corner. It's really uncomfortable seeing kids in that setting even if it's just drinks.

I'm super jealous of the NYC scene. I came up in a tiny scene several hours south of Tampa. It was like pulling teeth to get them to tell us what song was playing when we made the drive up there to Empire. The gate-keeping was **intense** in the mid 90's. One really cool thing about the Florida scene, was that each of the big cities had very distinct styles of dance. Like isolated tribes if you will. You could spot a Jacksonville goth from across the room. Each city had one or two really popular bands too. So, cross-scene shows ended up being like a big cultural exchange. My town still has a scene; but it's just a handful of kids that barely know current music - let alone pillars and traditions. Thanks for the lightning bolt through my memory banks 🖤

What I really enjoy about your channel is that it shows a Human, real experience. Something I can relate to. When I was a teen, I have had no real chance to be a Goth, due to the place and time I lived, I was at beast Darkly Inclined. Now, many years after that period, as I came back to dark things, I have, slowly, discovered Goth. At first, I considered you a ”moderate elitist” for pointing out that Goth is music-based. Yet, I felt you represented the real thing, and not those who played alone with my childish mindset. But now I agree and resonate with you. Thank for your contribution in helping me become a real Goth, something I feel I was suppose to be even back in the day, but had no chance then (better later then ever). The similarities and differences between American and German Goth culture are so interesting to compare. It's what I love about your videos and your insights. My start in the club scene was about ten years ago, and here, since the scene is so small, you feel a deep connection to the few clubs you do have. Your stories are so fun, and always send me into nostalgia of my own. Going into my "home" club for the first time, discovering new ones, travelling to go to farther away ones and meeting people from home there as a coincidence ... I love the "real life" part of the goth scene in Germany. The internet scene is so elitist, like you mentioned, the real life scene is so much more welcoming.

As fun as it is to see old friends, it was exciting to see new faces at the last event I went to. People who were freshly 21 came out and they were lovely. Having the benefit of the internet has done them well. Their clothes and makeup were on point but beyond that the benefit of accessing information on history and ability to find music is great. It was fun being able to talk to them and have conversations surrounding different related topics. obvi can’t speak for other aspects of the live scene, but in my lil slice of it we’re DEFINITELY WAYYY relaxed about- and i think it might have something to do with that subconscious fear of losing this magic. the music is popping off, the live scene has risen from the grave, and we’re all just eating up every moment of it… cause we’re afraid it might go away again. like, most of us (in my area) don’t really care if people call themselves goth or not without listening to the music, we’re just excited that people are showing up. the only thing that isn’t tolerated is douchebaggery: can’t be counter culture if you’re anti human rights in any capacity. and/or you’re just there to fetishize us 🤷‍♀️

Yeah, teenagers will be teenagers. And Goth teenagers are no exception. I like to think most people look back on their teenage years and at least find one thing to cringe about. I know I want to cringe at my teenage self at times. I definitely have things I wish I would've done differently. I guess it's apart of the process of growing up and the best thing we can do is learn from our mistakes. I'll be turning 28 next month and was born in 1995, so I was way too little to go to Goth clubs. Even if there were more Goth clubs now, my social anxiety would make it challenging to go visit one. I started to become interested in the style and subculture when I was thirteen. But I had restricted access to the internet and didn't know any other Goth people to educate me about the subculture and introduce me to the music back then. I pretty much lived under a rock. I do remember feeling afraid at some point that if I did meet other goths that I would be rejected and called a poser. One reason I do appreciate the age of the internet is that it's so much easier to access and discover new music. I think it's safe to say that I'm a 28 year old babybat.🤣🤣 I was missing out on some kickass music for sure and I'm glad I'm able to listen it, even if it is a bit later in my life.

lol this is exactly why I never even tryed to venture into ANY sub culture because all the alt people in my town were so mean. I went to this art highschool where basically the more alt you were the more you were popular so you can imagine all these alt regina george running around calling each others sl*ts and posers. I never even tryed to ask for any music raccomendations because they were just so aggressive, even the ones who were my friends were not welcoming and very gatekeepy, ready to point their finger at the poser if I inquired, so I purposely dressed as generic as possible because they really were little gangs. now I dress however I want and listen to whatever I want but I still feel terror whenever someone asks about what mucis I listen to because I still associate it with your whole person being judged. thanks for confirming that at least it was not just my paranoia. all of this was real in the 90's and 2000's. for how riddicolous it was in retrospective it's still scary when you are a teen who just wants friends.

But yeah.... the Baby Bats can get real testy with each other. Ive noticed a lot more Lolitas and Goths not really getting along, I dont know why that shocked me.

Love this 🙂 - I don't *think* Apop were ever mainstreamly massive in Norway, but you're right, when they started out they were mostly influenced by the likes of Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream and Depeche Mode. Now, I know a lot of baby bats these days consider Depeche Mode "one of us" but they weren't back in the day - they were only ever synth pop & back in '81 they were the perkiest bounciest bunch of popsters going, till their Black Album really focussed the pain - stylistically not Goth Rock but damn those lyrics pulled at our heartstrings & they dressed the part so all of a sudden they're getting goth club play & I'm slow dancing with my girlfriend at the time to "All I ever wanted, all I ever needed was here, in my arms" so I totally understand why some of us got really into Apop, and VNV, Mesh, etcetera - the Goth to Synthpop to Darkwave to EBM to Industrial pipeline I guess? They were very danceable in the late 90s & early 00s. I just saw VNV at the Mill in Birmingham & it was AWESOME - the gig space was small enough that Ronan was able to engage with fans one on one, like a stand up comedian with hecklers. Great craic. One of the best things about this scene - not just the adjacent bands but the core ones too end up playing small to medium venues & they're often so over the posing & the hand-staple-forehead *drama* of it all that they will engage in joking around and a bit of self-mockery - because if we can't have a laugh, what's it all for anyway?

Here in Sweden synthpop or what we said synth music was another type of music. And people that was into that we called synthare. But we could still enjoy the music and we could have those bands played in the clubs. One musician in the synth pop genre I actually loved was Howard Jones. Myself don't have those memories, cause I was often one of the oldest (even when I was "babybat"). We just sticked together. But our town wasn't that big either, plus closest bigger is Gothenburg. And in many cases "synthare" and goths (we say gothare) hanged in same places too. Always great listen to your stories. But that girl that kissed the old man... It was nice to hear from him that he wants to learn more about the scene and appreciates the people who have been around awhile.

Speaking of socializing in clubs, does anyone have any advice on that? I want to make some friends in my local scene but it feels hard to strike up conversation when the music is so loud :P Is it just a matter of continuing to show up regularly? Also, my local club has a staircase but luckily I've never taken a tumble from it lol
@jetta.silence6356

Honestly i used to talk to people outside the club. One of the best things to meet people was especially complimenting someones outfit or hair,makeup style that you like. Ask where its from ,did they make it, what brand is the eyeshadow or lip colour they are wearing. Its a great icebreaker. You learn to talk in the club too. Some can be very pretentious but to me thats them trying to be " cool". They probably feel a little alone too...maybe. Also just get out there and dance. Dance,feel the music just float around and dance with whomever for a second and move on. Dont linger cuz that would be creepy. Just long enough to say maybe hi and keep going. Go to the bar order a drink and sit at the bar ( or close to it) Sometimes others will talk to you or if you see someone that looks interesting to talk to also sitting at the bar just go over ask if the seat is taken and if they mind if you sit. Ask if they come to goth nights regularly. Is that particular night the normal for most goth nights. You will be able to tell if they want to talk or are irritated. And then there is always meeting your new goth bestie in the bathroom,lol. Especially if the stall door doesnt stay closed ask someone to hold it for you while you go. Chat about the best black lipstick that stays on all night while you wash your hands and check yourself in the mirror. If a song comes on you love say " i love this song lets go dance" . Just try to be as natural about things as you can. All of these are just icebreakers. Im def an eldergoth in my 40's so ive been around. Dont stray too far from being yourself. But i know right now people are very closed off. So you kinda need to be your own wingman to make friends and be calm but positive. You will find friends. I know it can be disheartening if it takes awhile. But yes keep going to the place. Itll happen.🖤

Early 00s. I was very underaged and existed in a lot of underground subcultures. I also look younger than I am. So my dumbass was 13 and had a fake ID that said 21. It didn’t work. Even in my 20s, I got quizzed on my ID. Thankfully there were all ages events every now and then. My first love was metal, and the metal scene was pretty aggressive, especially towards young girls. There were a lot of 30-40 year olds, who just didn’t think we should be there, made us question if we liked enough of the music to even watch a local high school band play. I think some of them were also doing what is now called ‘negging.’ I caught a lot of shit from people, some of whom were just a few years older than us in most sun cultures back, back then. It made me actually hate going out by the time I was securely in adulthood. I don’t think subcultures are like that now with young people. When I meet a kid with a band shirt that I like, I talk to them, suggest other bands and albums, and let them know they can get me if they have a problem. The bar I work at has zero tolerance for people starting shit. They get sent home, and get banned if it becomes a pattern. This is what we do no matter what event is going on. If anyone doesn’t like people they can sit there and not interact like adults. The elitists people see online, don’t usually go out… because they don’t have friends. They won’t be at an event, especially if it’s all ages or 18+. You may see them at a big show at a venue, but they won’t go farther than a sarcastic comment. You can absolutely get them to leave you alone by rolling your eyes and saying ‘oh, you’re one of those old people’ or ‘aren’t you missing bingo and tapioca?’ 20 something me may have hated dealing with them, but got pretty good at shutting them down. One guy in the punk scene in Ft Lauderdale was notorious for talking down to anyone under the age of 40. He ended up in the car we were riding in and he started with the ‘you can’t be punk if you listen to these other genres.’ I dove in with ‘we get it grandpa! You saw Fear back in the Stone Age, and rode on the back of a dinosaur to the show. You saw The Plasmatics before electricity was invented? Does the retirement home know you left? Aren’t you missing Matlock and Murder She Wrote? Isn’t past your bedtime?’ He actually laughed and said ‘ok kid… you got my respect. You’re good.’ The worst thing you can do when you meet an elitist of any age, is kiss their ass. Just make it clear you don’t respect them for how they talk to others and ignore them.

Apop is Futurepop sound, in the likes of VNV Nation. In Europe our alternative/Goth music is pop. Compare to R and B/Pop here in America. So the likes of The cure, Robert Smith or Depeche Mode, they consider themselves Pop in Europt and the UK, which is true, they are. BUT... here, in America, they are ALL Underground.
