Yes, you do want a waiting pad above the farm. It helps direct mob spawning to where you want (the farm) instead of in the ocean or nearby caves. Loving the series btw and Merry Christmas!!

If you just want the loot drops, and you can make a way the mobs die when they fall, then the platform is good. otherwise you will have despawn rates and entity cramming caps to work with, as well as running up and down from the platform when the kill chamber is full to collect the xp. The next best thing would be to scaffold to build height and build it up there, so the kill chamber is well above where any mob can spawn.

It'd be great of makistein could divide the deaths by amount of time spent on the server. Then the number would actually mean something (deaths per hour). ATP if someone is rarely online they'd obviously have fewer deaths. Deaths per hour would be a much better indication of skill.

The waiting platform is technically an option, but it's not really useful in this case. It works when if the spawner is meant for drops only, and it's built high enough that you kill the mobs from height, but since this is partially intended as an XP grinder, you do want to be the one getting the hits in, and travelling 128 block up and then down again often enough that you're not filling the mob cap of the area is just not worth it. You can try finding some of the closest caves to the surface and lighting those up, but otherwise, this is the best you'll get it while having it be an xp-grinder

You could theoretically put an AFK platform in the sky but you would have to extend the drop distance of the main tube so the mobs would die on impact, and it wouldn't give any XP, just drops. That farm is meant to be built in the sky for maximum efficiency to avoid mobs spawning in caves and interfering with the farm spawn rates. It obviously still works to some degree though. Lovely episode!

27:46 Yes, mobs spawn between 24-128 blocks inclusive away from you, have a chance to despawn if further than 32 blocks from you, and instantly despawn if further than 128 blocks away (all three of these are spherical distances, not cubes). It’s probably worth it to build a platform in the air at a height that the farm is in spawning range but anywhere below that is not, and maybe also (if you think it’s worth it) have bubble columns to send the mobs up to you (if you add bubble columns then you can have it send the mobs higher than you are and then drop them instead of dropping them first. Also, if you want it to be even more efficient, you can build your platform in a different chunk to the farm; when the game selects a height to try to spawn mobs at, it chooses a height between the bottom of the world and the highest placed block, and if it can’t spawn there [ex: the mob would be standing on air], it fails. This is why people making extremely high rate farms tend to make the farms as low as possible and make perimeters [on top of it being free spawnproofing]; if there are less heights to choose from, it will be more likely to choose a favorable height to spawn the mobs. Chunk borders can be toggled with F3+G. Since you have the farm built a little above sea level though, I think the negative effects from building directly above the farm would not be that noticeable)

mobs spawn in a sphere around you so if you're in the sky, that sphere will only include the mob farm instead of all the caves underneath you. for the nether portal, I think the mechanic for it was spawning souls from the obisidian? so if the obi is covered up by any blocks in general, the souls can't come out maybe

I’m sure lots of other people have already mentioned this but the mob farm is much more effective in the sky. If you build your waiting platform about 150 blocks above the water (with the mob farm above that) the rates will increase significantly as there’s no water mobs to ruin the spawn cap. Unfortunately, it’s gonna be *impossible* to remove the old one as you will almost surely die countless times

Yes, you are almost definitely loading caves underneath you right now, taking up spawns. Mobs spawn in a sphere, so you want the only spawnable spaces in that sphere to be in your mob farm. Easiest way to achieve this is to have an AFK platform above your mob farm, and for the stage your at that is probably the optimal decision. The alternative options are to ensure every cave, every spawnable space outside your farm is mob proofed. For caves, that's fairly easy, just light them up... but the ocean makes it a bit more difficult or to dig out a perimeter, ensuring that there are no spawnable spaces anywhere in loaded chunks. Perimeter is ideal conditions because the mob algorithm on java (afaik, unless its changed, but I doubt it...) works from the bottom of the world and goes up. If the highest block in a loaded chunk is, say, 30 blocks above bedrock then it only has to go through 30 layers of spawnable spaces, but any blocks above that will force it to work its way up to wherever that block is. I.e. if you have a mob farm at Y=-30, and then a layer of blocks at Y+30, you are adding another 60 layers for the algorithm to work through.

Don't know if anyone has noted this somewhere, but I was trying to take a screenshot of the moment when the landshark jumps outta the fountain at 23:48, and I saw for a split second a hoglin as though the landshark was riding it. Must be something about how Makistein implemented the sharks and/or land sharks, and I'm intrigued about the facts surrounding this. Also, once you know what you're looking for, you can see the hoglin without pausing or slowing it down; it's a flicker and gone, kinda like Fight Club (IYKYK).

Jimmy, you might consider modifying your house to make it out of stones or bricks (maybe even nether brick?) so it won't catch on fire, considering how much of the game launches fire at you (and Impulse just had his house catch on fire). Yes, making a waiting platform will make the farm much better. The mob spawn range from the player is 128 blocks, so you should build it about 120 blocks up from the top of the farm, so mobs should only be able to spawn in the farm. Other players might be a bit of a problem though because their presence can cause mobs to spawn elsewhere by being on the ground. P.S. get grian back

Regarding the mob farm, in theory yes, it is true. But since it is above the ocean you will have majority of caves that are within the spawning sphere filled with water meaning no mobs can spawn. Building a platform will increase spawn rate BUT is only helpful if the mobs autodie and you simply afk up there. The time it takes to get up and down I dont think is valuable
