@@kathrynhoward4196 Yeah, there's no such thing as a perfect scene, but as far as that goes... this one stands right at the top of the heap with a small group of others. This sequence out of a whole movie of insane, REALLY changed movie experiences. Seeing this in the theater as a teenager... this movie was a whole other level of intense. It's primal and feral. Getting tossed into a world we have no experience with except for bones. The tension as they build up to seeing the actual T-rex come through the fence. The fear that it going after the kids creates. Filming it in harsh unidirectional lighting in the rain which lets them get away with a lot of VFX issues so they don't have to be flawless... everything about this is top notch film making.

In an era where us as movie goers/enjoyers have seen pretty much of everything, it still goes to show if suspense, fear, apprehension, tension, sound, and build up is done right, it can make for an unbelievable and unforgettable experience. Well technically not quite lord of the rings as the story was written in the 40s-50s way before Jp so pple were more familiar with the story as it was taught in ours school system etc it was done as a film but sadly only as a short budget plus wud of been impossible to make the way they did the current films without the cgi effects we hav today especially being a fantasy based story as it simple didn’t exist even the effects used in JP were in its infancy, so wudnt of worked in the right way for lord of the rings, but in terms of filming an creating the suspense jp definitely set the bar for how future films needed to be shot which in turn gave new ideas for technology etc unfortunately tht didn’t start expending fully till the 2000s. In terms of stories lord of the rings was one of the first where a new language was created which set the bar for things like game of thrones etc

This movie was re-released in the dollar theater near me many years ago, and despite the movie being rated PG-13, the movie theater was filled with parents and little kids. Everything was fine till this very scene came up and there was low crying sound, almost like a moan, in the theater. I looked around and these little kids were climbing into their parent's laps, and then everything was OK again. I remember thinking how lucky in some ways little children are - no matter what problems are out there, no matter how scary, sitting in mom or dad's lap and being hugged makes it all OK.

So it didn't stop when it was supposed to, so the kids reactions were very real.

Saw this the day it opened. My mother, sister and I were sitting directly under the speakers in the theater. Hearing that T-Rex roar was deafening and terrifying. Still an incredible scene to this day. Looking back on it now, it seems to me that the T-Rex was originally just exploring and claiming the area outside the fence as its territory at first, but when Lex shined the light into it's eye, it considered that a challenge and the car (along with the kids) became a challenger to be eliminated
@ronodenthal100
@ronodenthal100 Жыл бұрын
I often tell people that given what we know about just how strong this animal must have been, it's behavior looks almost like play behavior. It has no one to communicate with when it roars following its escape. Instead, it's roaring out of pure joy. Like a dog that can't stop barking once it gives chase to a rabbit. It toys with the cars. it knows there's living things in there but it does things to try to get them to react. It's thriving off of the interaction in the same way a cat does when chasing a mouse and waiting for the mouse to make a move before it does. The way it explores the Land Rover and systematically takes it apart piece by piece, it's like it can't get enough of these new tastes and sounds and sensations as it destroys the tires. This is a 10 ton animal, so what stopped it from just crushing the children in their seats if it wanted them dead? The fact that it didn't actually care if they died or not. It just was having fun. Similarly, it opts to head butt Ian. We see him riding on its snout when it crashed through the wall. And it doesn't even eat the lawyer, whose two halves they find later on. The very first thing it does is go traipsing through the general area instead of returning to its own territory even though it surely can smell the humans in there. It's not hunting. It's playing. And we're it's chew toys. It's cute, albeit a little painful when our cat does it... It's just that we might as well be wet tissue against the raw strength of an animal of Tyrannosaurus Rex's size.. This is an animal being an animal. A bored tiger has gotten out of its pen, and it's not hungry but it has been so very long since it has truly gotten to flex its muscles, stretch its tendons, and dig in with its claws. How such an animal must miss being what it was born to be.. And the Tyrannosaur here? Why it's never even had the opportunity to begin with! It probably doesn't even know what to do with itself. The book sort of goes into this a bit more deeply, as they do spy the Rex once before the big scene, where in it looks mournful as it gazes past its fence, observing a world it can't access. Watching and listening to the sauropods. It is an animal meant to be free, and to rule its world with absolute power.. now forced to live like a pet. It's almost pitiful, the picture painted. That is before it escapes and becomes a major threat to the life of every person on the island. Ultimately, Tyrannosaurus Rex had a bite unlike anything to have ever walked the Earth. It supposedly could have peeled armor off a tank with the incredible power of those jaws, had it found one sitting around in the late Cretaceous. Knowing just how strong it is, and having seen how incredibly easily the adult Tyrannosaurs tear apart and throw around the vehicles in The Lost World, we can definitely confirm this Rex was not destroying just to attack. Had it wanted to, it could have torn the Land Rover apart as easily as you or I a piece of paper. Lex and Tim survived their encounter with an animal, not a monster, I like to say, and precisely because it was just that. Living as one, and enjoying life as one, and reminding us of the incredible power nature possesses (compared to our fragile being, at least) even when it has no malevolent intent what so ever,

@@ronodenthal100 this is quite possible with its iq being comparable to modern day apes. Also yes it is true that with a 13,000 pound bite force, (greatest of any land animal ever) it would be able to bite through a modern Abrams tank. Also it is a myth that T. rex had terrible eyesight, infact quite the opposite. It is estimated that a Rex’s eyesight would have been 6 times better than that of modern hawks. It also has possibly the greatest smell out of any animal ever discovered

My sister didn’t see this in the theater but she told me a great story. When she saw this at home for the first time, they watched this scene and then took a short bathroom break. When my sister went to the bathroom, her hands were still trembling. Amazing scene.

Wait, so it was a surprise to the cast, at the last minute, to get a genuine response .... like the blood spurting at Veronica Cartright in the dinner scene from Alien? That's crazy. I mean, I would have thought that with audio-animatronics and puppets you'd need to have the cast know every single moment of a scene, because it all has to be planned and storyboarded and then they do camera angles and compositon and blocking.

Just to debunk the rumors - staying still in front of a T-Rex would not work at all in real life. A T-Rex has the same visual acuity as hawks and falcons (both of which have eyesight 13x better than humans). Standing still would only make it easier for a T-Rex to eat you.

I was 15 when this came out and saw it in the theater. When that T-rex let out that first full roar, it was terrifying to some of the little kids that were there. They advertised this as a kid's movie when it came out, at least that's what the trailers led you to believe so people brought their kids to see it. This was NOT a kid's movie. It ws amazing when it came out. Never had dinosaurs looked so real. Still fun to watch.
