I know this scene is supposed to be feminist battle cry, but when I saw it in the theater I thought "this character really has a victim mentality, 'i have it too hard', but in reality she judges herself and others to harshly and also believes everyone judges her"

i remember you gushing about Barbie when you saw it with Openheimer. i've always though it a mixed message mess aimed at young girls that fell off a cliff half-way through. its not worth a repeat viewing never mind Oscar-nominations. hilarious.

People tend to be weird with the "kids' movie" card nowadays, applying it to movies that are rated PG-13. For example, I remember people using the same argument for the 2014 Michael Bay TMNT movie despite it containing jokes about Victoria's Secret.

I thought this monologue was hilarious (intentionally) because all of these “rules” are put on women by themselves.

Is that the joke?
@loekegaard9 Жыл бұрын
@@pleaserewind295 I don't think the filmmakers are aware of what *thorntonwager6750* is saying themselves, so the joke is most likely unintentional, but everything said in the speech, in the way the filmmakers intend the audience to understand it, is a fucking joke. I haven't seen the film myself, but now that I've seen your video, it seems to me that the speech is tantamount to a child screaming about nothing, screaming for the sake of screaming, just like children can do - ultimately, a woman screaming about wanting a medal for just existing. I love your videos, and I hope you make more of them in the future. They're high quality stuff.

I TOTALLY agree. Whatever make is holding a woman up to their standards is just a maniac. But the lyric in the Van Morrison song is "all the girls go by, dressed up for each other".... All this anxiety it's female wrought.
@thorntonwager675011 ай бұрын
@@pleaserewind295 I believe it is. I think the filmmakers knew EXACTLY what they were doing in making this movie Based. I mean the Barbies literally enjoy having the Ken’s be in charge. Ken is the most sympathetic character in the movie (hence the Oscar nom) and Barbie even CHOOSES to live in the “Patriarchy” of the real world. There is too many jabs at women and too many efforts to make the Ken’s sympathetic for this to be unintentional.

In the 1980s, Verhoeven movies like Robocop and Total Recall were R-rated "kid movies". But yeah, pretty much any evasive retreat into the space where "it's just a movie for kids" or "It's just a movie about space wizards and monsters to sell toys" is always a dismissive intent.

Oh yeah Paul Verhoeven traumatized and inspired 80s kids everywhere in his time!

I’m so tired of women treating Barbie the same way the right-wing/red pill/incels treated Joker. Barbie was a good movie with some obvious true themes in it but for the most part it was hammed up like Joker.
