12:42 Thanks for your video!! I'm wondering if it would create a clean look to "sandwich" the shade inbetween both sides of the bias tape? So one side of it goes inside the lamp shade. Is there a disadvantage to doing that?

No, no disadvantage other than it's more work. It would probably look very nice.

I’m wondering, asking for input: would it be better to use an opaque lamp shade or paint it inside and out black before covering, I thinking that we’ve already reduced the light with the fabric, and the outside might look better, both lit and unlit. I’m also thinking of using decorative marbled papers to make one of these shades. I have a big stash of vintage decor fabric. If I get good at it, maybe I’ll ask family and friends to choose a fabric, and I’ll make a custom shade gift. Who-hoo! This is the very best tutorial.
@MimzyandCompany
@MimzyandCompany 16 күн бұрын
The black paint idea is interesting. It could be good as long as it’s truly opaque. I do love a black shade with gold on the inside…very elegant. Idk , I think you should try it! If your fabric is dark or at least NOT light it could be really pretty. Of course you’ll have zero ambient light, only directional light from the top and bottom of the shade…which is also really nice for certain situations. Hmmm …you’ve given me something to think about…

Hi. I watched your video and agree that it's the best one. So, I made my first shade today for a small lamp. The only thing I didn't like was the finish at the top. I put the band around the top no problem. But I could see where I cut the fabric at the top of the shade. I would like a more finished look. Is there an additional step that could be added to cover that? I would like to make more, but I need a solution for this. Thanks. Greetings from the great state of Georgia!
@MimzyandCompany
@MimzyandCompany Ай бұрын
Thank you. I think you could make the binding a little bigger and then open it up to enclose the top.
@cheekyllamacreations
@cheekyllamacreations 10 күн бұрын
Maybe make sure the centre fold of the band covers the raw edge? In other words, just hang the fold over the raw edge and either side of the band will hang down in the inside and on the outside. I hope that makes sense…I know what I mean haha 😊 Edit: I’ve just noticed Mimzy’s reply and I think she has the same idea but has explained it better than me! 😁
@MimzyandCompany
@MimzyandCompany 10 күн бұрын
@@cheekyllamacreations yes, makes total sense. But it can look a little sloppy. The banding would need to be a little bigger to that. 😃

Will this method work with all shapes of lampshade?
@MimzyandCompany
@MimzyandCompany 7 ай бұрын
Yes. But if you have a bell shaped shade it’ll end up flat. And if you have a square or rectangle you may need to cut 4 pieces wider to go around the corners.

thank you so much for this. I would’ve never guessed cutting the material into strips. I want to do this with my bedroom lampshades that are antique, but I’m not a seamstress so I have no idea how much material to order for 44” round drum shades (that’s the largest part of the shade) Can you please help me? I have two shades the same size. I’m definitely subscribing. Thank you so much.
@MimzyandCompany
@MimzyandCompany 4 күн бұрын
If the fabric is 45” or wider you could probably get away with 1 yard. But it depends upon how tall your shade is as well. If you can get away with cutting your strips 9” then one of fabric will get you four rows of fabric strips . If your shade is taller than 9” then you should be able to get away the 1.5 yards of fabric.
@MimzyandCompany
@MimzyandCompany 4 күн бұрын
sorry , i wrote that in the car. You should be able to get it done with 1 1/2 yards of fabric.
@RebekahLeaPhelps
@RebekahLeaPhelps 4 күн бұрын
@@MimzyandCompanywow for 2 shades?!
@MimzyandCompany
@MimzyandCompany 4 күн бұрын
@@RebekahLeaPhelps yes because one yard is 36" long x 45" wide, so you should be able to cut 3 rows at 11" and those 3-11" rows can be cut into 1.5" strips. You'll have 67" of fabric each shade to get your strips out of. I'd get 2 yards to be safe. Unless your shades are more than 11 tall then you might need another half yard.

@MimzyandCompany
@MimzyandCompany 6 ай бұрын
that's a good question. I just guessed at this attempt. But after doing this project I know that it took about 1/2 yard of decorator fabric(54" wide). Depends upon the size of the shade though...I'm about to do a few more shades...I'll let you know.
