I think the most important part is to establish the dark areas early on like right after block in... Also standing back to judge when color mixing... basically throughout the process...you always mention these points ... can't be stressed enough.

Three painters at the cliffs All looking good, looking fierce For the first time, Amy swings a big brush Maura’s able to capture the sea’s crush Michael squints from big shapes to more specific Gains perspective with the atmosphere of the Pacific Patreon has more, always something good We’ll stay creative, it’s understood 😁 🌊 🎨 👒 Maura’s paintings have an ethereal beauty to me. Her lights and shadows have something that is hard to describe but really great. Amy’s joy is fun to witness and I liked the shadow she painted too. You amaze me once again. Letting us watch the progression from scrub in to loaded brush stage is such an honor. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I have noticed I observe more colors in the water (and in general) since watching you paint. Bonus benefit. 😁 Thanks for sharing! Peace and love..Suz What ☮️💛

Thanks Suz! Maura's the hardest working plein air painter I know. She often paints five days a week and has no problem spending 3-4 hours on a painting. After 2 hours I'm toast! 😂 I agree there's a very special beauty in her work. I'm a big fan. Amy has such a great attitude. She's not afraid to jump in and go for it!

What a gorgeous location! Such a variety of views and colour. I like what you said about values are more important than colour. It is true, if you have your values right, colour is where your interpretation of a scene can take over. This may seem a bit out of left field but Philip Burke is a great example of value over colour, (to an extreme actually). He's not a landscape artist, but a brilliant caricature illustrator. His likenesses are fantastic, but distorted. But he can push his colours so far because his values are spot on. Love the explanations as you paint Michael. Also great to see such enthusiasm for painting in the people you paint with.

Hey Micheal…I really like the way you got the color/value shift on the main cliff in the painting here. Then, just a random thought. The composition reminded me of Rene Magritte’s painting “Time Transfixed”. HAA! Like the cliff juts out in a threatening way into the canvas. Anyway, I digress. Cheers -Greg

Beautiful spot, beaufitul painting, nice colors and very fresh, love it. Your compo and Maura's were kind of similar. She is also such a good painter Im impressed by the detail she puts on her paintings in such a short amount of time, maybe it's because her canvases are small.

. . . Michael , your luminous peach ambered cliff face , gentled by peering through the elongated depth of suspended shadow, a point of creativity you captured. You’ve been seeking this perception, look behind the blue surf board, long ago, shadow traverses pavement , it’s center delineation, perpendicular to roadways edge, emerge from angular shadow in daylight. Today’s painting is an evolution I hope to comprehend, the complexity of reflecting color while peering through and outside of a “ day - lit “ , shadow, I think it’s beautiful. 😌

Beautiful paintings!!! Do you use a Plein air umbrella? How do you deal with painting in shade or sun?
@chamberlainpaintings2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I don't paint with an umbrella. It's usually too windy and it's just one more piece of equipment to carry. I turn my panel so that it's in the shade. I don't mind having light on my palette. It's a mid tone neutral grey so I use it as reference for value and color.
@purchasestheriault81102 жыл бұрын
My apologies Michael - I asked what you used for carrying wet panels... I had searched for the answer but didn't find your blog on this, but after my comment I searched again and of course found it. Good info. Thanks!

I noticed in each of your videos, you tone the canvas on site. Is that part of your process? Why not tone it before hand to speed up the start of the painting? Thanks in advance and I love your work!
@chamberlainpaintings2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Brad! Actually toning onsite speeds up my process. Painting on a dry panel slows down the paint application. Having the panel or canvas slightly dampened with the mineral spirits from the tone really helps speed things up!

Nice work. Questions: You leave a space between the frame and the picture, won't it get dirty over time? What is so important about tonal values and colors when everything is actually allowed in artistic design. Doesn't that limit you?
@chamberlainpaintings2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Everything gets dirty over time. That's life. 😂 The dirtiest part of the frame is the top. Fortunately, when things get dirty we simply clean them. As for artistic design, if values and colors aren't your thing go with whatever makes you happy.
@canananneninhayat5052 жыл бұрын
Jeah, especially on the top. But in little spaces “especially behind the panel you can’t clean it well.It’s a serious question, how are you handle it? Ok, 2. questions isn’t answered, but it’s ok.

No shade to your channel but I'm going to say something that I think ought to be said even though it's not politically correct. I don't think we should water down the term Plein air. I don't think we artists ought to go outdoors, paint a hill, sign our name with a stick and call it Plein Air. Plein Air is one thing only... It's a French country landscape painted with a clearly implied emotion through the use of "impression". That's my thought on the subject. Nice job though!!
