How to turn a dull scene into a beautiful painting. I've just learned a little bit more watching this video. Yesterday I've been talking with a woman from Toulouse who was plain air painting where I was hiking and I stayed for a while watching her struggle with light changes, people, wind and dust and It reminded me how hard it is to be out there.

Love this painting- so much energy that describes the day with your variety of brushstrokes. Can you explain the advantages of adding liquin?
@chamberlainpaintings3 жыл бұрын
Liquin allows you to thin the paint without compromising its strength. If you thin with odorless mineral spirits only, you break down the binder in the paint, which diminishes its ability to adhere to the panel. If you're using a somewhat absorbent canvas this isn't as much of a problem since the thinned paint soaks into the surface. Liquin also speeds up drying time. The painting is usually dry and ready for touch ups in 24 hours.

One of the things that I really like about your paintings is the way you simplify the scene. Was this something that took a long time to develop or was it just a natural thing for you?

I like your use of the tile effect in the rocks, you had in one shot an angled brush stokes in the sky with a lighter value I really thought that was clever as if a front was coming in, then it was gone obviously you didn't like it, though I still think it was clever. The composition was very well done something I struggle with. Very nice painting. I took note of the purple/violet dioxazine and yellow ocher that works well. Great stuff.
@chamberlainpaintings3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Mike! It wasn't that I didn't like it, I wanted to darken the sky to make the whitewater stand out. Sometimes you have to sacrifice something that's working for the greater good of the painting 😂

Very cool painting. Personally, I think that you could’ve pushed the atmospheric perspective a little more on the rocks. If you look at all the paintings you do there’s a very noticeable consistency and it’s a good thing except that I think you might benefit from limiting yourself to a primary colors palette every once in a while and work mainly on the value message of the painting, basically experimenting more. With that said, your compositions are getting better better! I’d love to paint plen air with you some day if I’m visiting the states.

Hey Mike...really like your subtle color changes especially with Grey's...did you add the mixed sky color to some of the wave color patterns?... Anyway big storms brewing ...n'easter coming here Wednesday..."batten down the hatches"...
@chamberlainpaintings3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Nancy! I mixed the color for the water next to the sky color in order to get the value correct but I didn't add any sky color to the mix. I later added sky color to the surface of the water and the wet rocks. Big storms brewing out here too! Actually in the middle of one now. 25 knot winds at the ocean. I'm sure your winds will be stronger. Batten down the hatches indeed!
