Thank you Michael for all of your suggestions. I’m a newbie with oils. I’ve only painted with watercolors and acrylics. I bought some small panels, a set of brushes, an assortment of paints with 12 colors to be exact…but they are the small tubes, and beginner level too. And I didn’t forget the odorless mineral spirits! I’ve watched a few of your videos, and I’m excited to start this journey. You said recently, “paint shapes, not things”…I will follow that advice! Take care, Loraine

Thanks for taking us out to Pacifica. I really enjoy watching your tutorials and how you set up the composition. I’m using some of my videos from around the bay to do my own “Plein air”. Recently, I’ve been focused on city scenes, like the favorite eating spots, Tony’s in north beach, and the little corner stores. Now that I have time......I’m working up the nerve to try a new style and composition.

Michael, I have become a big fan. I appreciate how you break down the steps of your work. Truly admire your loose but expressive brush work. On this video, you began to show us exactly how you mixed paint for the sky and the earlier rock forms as well as the first ocean values. But then you rushed through the rest and did not demonstrate the mixes for the finished product. That was a mystery. As one of my instructors told me: 75 percent of painting is mixing the correct values for the hues chosen. Please try show us more of your mixing magic.

Thank you for your videos - they are a pleasure to watch and they are helping me stay motivated to paint in the studio, and outside when our central Texas weather improves. Here's the request/question: I'd like to hear more about your evaluation of mediums. You've used Liquin for most of the posts I've seen, and I love the look of your paintings. Question from a new viewer - I've searched for an answer to this with no success...maybe because it's a silly question to someone with your experience, but I'll ask it anyway. When the support or painting surface is white do so many artists use a palette that's brown or wood color? It seems to me you'd want to see how the mixed colors will look on the white surface. Great videos, instructional and done very personably. Thank you, Sir.

A white palette outdoors would be blinding.
@daveart48202
@daveart48202 3 жыл бұрын
@@chamberlainpaintingsThank you for the quick response. So, I guess one becomes accustomed to mixing colors on a toned palette over time? Do you use a white one indoors? In pictures of the masters at work in their studios, more often than not, they using brown (or the natural wood color). So for you, the only reason is because the brilliance of white would overpower the color-mixing process. I've been painting and illustrating for 50+ years, but very recently have gotten really intrigued by plein air and impressionist painting. Again, thank you for the response. It's fun and inspiring watching you work.
@chamberlainpaintings
@chamberlainpaintings 3 жыл бұрын
What I like about a wood palette is that it’s about mid value. Mine is gray from years of painting. So it’s a mid value, neutral color palette, which is helpful when mixing colors indoors and outdoors 😊👍

The stark white palette makes the values more difficult to judge. Toning your canvas/panel slightly as well makes it less intimidating to start. Experiment to find out what works best. Everyone is different.

Thank you for the video ! It looks beautiful! I love the colors and brush strokes. I am starting Plein Air painting so far I am going slow hope to become faster... I am working on a piece right now that has a cliff similar to your rocks.The dashes on your sketch on the rocks where those like guidelines for your colors? I only ask because I am working on a similar piece and I tried sketching out the rock on the canvas and I guess I added too many details for my sketch and it became confusing. Do you have any suggestions on painting rocks ? How to sketch it out ? Thank you Korena

You don't need much and you can paint more in a sneaky way 😎. I know I just have to deal with the things that holding me back. I am a little bit jealous of the seascapes where you live. I love the sea very much but in the Netherlands the seascape is flat, even boring, But....every landscape has his own beauty and maybe you have just to search for the thing to make it an interesting painting.
