23:45 wow the color saturation you pulled off is amazing. A take-away I got from this is if I'm going to boost color saturation in one area, like the water, also think about ways to consistently match that energy across the whole scene (bluer shadows and redder rocks). Very simple advice, and reflected in masterpieces in museum, but in practice that takes some confidence!

Michael, seems like you're forming a bit of a Pescadero School or movement. It is refreshing to see several takes on one area and how each person observes. Also, the way the different styles come out. I admire the generosity of your time and positive feedback to each of your friends. It's invaluable to have that kind of insightful feedback. Now they each have that experience to help them grow and achieve even better pieces in the future. One thing the world will never have too much of is artists. Love your piece. Great colour and superb contrast. I really get the feeling of distance out on the water. I'm really craving a burrito!

If you want to lay down gesso without having to use the grid just use a roller that has a tiny little bit more fiber in it instead of the foam rollers. It will make little teeny tiny microscopic divits that make the paint adhere better. I do use pumice when using foam rollers. Fun video Michael. You are a natural teacher. A couple of things I really liked, which leads me to believe you've taught classes before. Firstly, you always asked first before offing an opinion. I think any artist, regardless of skill or experience is entitled to that courtesy. But also when you were giving some direction, you used what I used to call my "shit sandwich" approach. The first thing you tell them has to be something positive, a compliment. Then give them the direction, or what they might do to correct the issue. Then leave them with something positive. Sometimes it's just about confidence, and by making sure they hear positive stuff on either side of the correction, they are more likely to do what you suggest. When I taught beginner art classes, I did that, and more than 2 decades of teaching people to ride motorcycles - where it's really effective. Good video. And I like the painting too. I wouldn't touch it the way it is. I think you're right about the transparent reds near the foreground, they really stand out.
