Plein Air Sketching with Liquid Charcoal

Today I went plein air sketching in the local Cornwall landscape with my liquid charcoal. I had my Seawhite A4 sketchbook and mixed some white casein and graphite in with the Wallace Seymour liquid charcoal.
I really enjoyed the morning in sunshine and showers!
I get most of my ideas for paintings and drawings during these morning sketching / dog walking outings. I am always looking for interesting compositions and lighting effects. I try to find interesting shapes and contrast in the local landscapes.

I was hoping to go out plein air painting today but it’s too cold to stand outside for long, and then luckily I found your video when I searched for how to use liquid charcoal. It looks perfect for quick mark-making! I love how you got your impressions and response to the landscape down so quickly and loosely. I can feel an art shop visit coming on. I will take my casein out too, so fast getting those lighter tones in. Thanks Andrew. Just Subscribed.

not really - I do sometimes if I'm painting but for sketching I just use my eye

Khadi is good for water or any cotton rag paper

Very atmospheric, and it just proves that so much can be done quickly with charcoal and washes. Sir Muirhead Bone's charcoal drawings are a case in point.
