Thanks to you and your wife for sharing your painting process, I enjoy it a lot. I like your technique very much. Thanks for showing it. I expect to be able to learn something from your teachings and of course to put them into practice. Needles to say I enjoy your adventures in your beautiful Scotland.

Great inspiration! I'm not as strong at hiking as I used to be but I know some really beautiful places along trails with creeks and giant boulders jutting out and they are nice places to sit and rest. I won't feel so lazy if I take along my paints and give it a try. Thank you for taking us along to these stunning places!

Lovely painting in challenging weather conditions, well done. Bass rock looks great and the rivulets in the sand also. Good filming Tanya 😊

Hi Susan, Glad you enjoyed the painting. It really was a wonderful experience painting there. Bass Rock is looking different at the moment as it’s usually white as there is normally a huge Gannett colony living on the island. However, bird flu has had a big impact. For the first 12mins I'm thinking how's James going to pull this one together, but from that point onwards the painting came to life, I could then see how important that first wash is. It takes alot of skill to lay the first wash and then build the rest of the painting on top. Amazing thanks.

We just returned from a holiday in Scotland by coach were we visited Edinburgh, walking up Carlton hill then down to Hollywood, up the mile and of corse finished in the booking office on Waverley station. 🍺looking forward to more of your trips.

Hi James, thanks for your reply and the information on brushes, what general number size would suggest ? I never realised how quick you paint! Turbo charged when the dark clouds are looming. I like your final painting by the way, I'm slowly absorbing your style and advice. I also realise how brave you need to be whilst painting outside. Cheers Steve Ps thank your wife for her excellent camera work!

Hi Steve, It’s difficult to give a brush Number as each company that make brushes Number them differently. You probably need about five or six sable type brushes, ranging from the biggest to a small one, but not too small. I also use a couple of mop brushes as well. What I’ll do soon, is a little video on it and explain the brushes I use. Keep going!!!! Best wishes, James
@stephenfoster18189 ай бұрын
Hi James ,I enjoyed your video, love watching how you compile the colours etc. Like the way you add your verbal bits in there too. Any tips on which brushes a beginner should have? Steve
@JamesPotterAboutArt9 ай бұрын
Hi Steve, It was a very windy outdoor painting, glad you enjoyed it. In terms of brushes, I use sable brushes, but my recent acquisition is a synthetic mop, which is fine. Ideally, if money isn’t a problem sable is best however the synthetic brushes are very good now. If I were to use synthetic brushes all the time I don’t think you’ll see much of a difference in my painting. Understanding and practice is probably the biggest improvement you can make in your painting. Hope that helps. Best wishes, James
