I think this round-up really shows the variety of shading in the bottle colours. I never realised before how varied they could be. I love the wonky neck on the aqua sauce bottle that's on the turntable with the aqua ink, & another sauce - which wobbled dangerously as it came around. :O I also liked the coffin whiskey, & the Escoffier. Another ginger beer! You're spoiled for choice. ;)

beautiful tip! sad about the necked codds; I just found out that around 1911 here in Australia laws were made that p[rohibted the breaking of codds/bottles obviously because the bottle companies worked via a deposit and return system and they were losing too much bottles due to naughty (normal) kids breaking the codds to get the marbles:)
@VintageParagonUk3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yes that is right, I think the drink company had to sell a bottle 4 times to break even on the cost of the bottles production which is pretty crazy but they are like works of art! I have found a few later ones that have a different patent and instead of a marble they have like a double sided cone shape which still works as a stopper but pretty useless as a marble 😂
@ISCDesignArchitect3 жыл бұрын
@@VintageParagonUk yeah true. i often think about how much the cordials works invested in the actual bottles. it must have bene expensive to purchase a contract of say 20,000-100,000 hand made ginger beer bottles.
@VintageParagonUk3 жыл бұрын
@@ISCDesignArchitect It is easy to forget when digging that most of the things we find have been hand made and it was someone's job to just throw clay all day or blow glass day in day out, all those man hours put into something that was just smashed up by a kid after a marble 😂

How old are these bottles do you think,we should have recycled years ago. It looks like everything has rotted away except glass and metal.
@VintageParagonUk3 жыл бұрын
Most of these are 1900-1920, there is lots of dumps all over filled with glass, metal and ceramic. Perhaps one day in the future they will be dug out and recycled. I suppose it was cheaper and easier to just make something from new rather than recycle it.

@@VintageParagonUk I might start doing this,there is a land fill site that was used back in the 1950s on a old fort in Herefordshire.

I've lived in Ferndale my whole life and can't recall ever hearing of a Jones and Sons. I'll dig through some history book and see if I can find anything
@VintageParagonUk3 жыл бұрын
I have found quite a few of the Codd bottles from them but yet to find a complete one, I couldn't find any information about them either. Next time I am there I will pick up the green one that I left there and you are welcome to have it if you like?
@Garron883 жыл бұрын
That would be awesome thanks so much, I've gone through one or two books and can't see anything that matches exactly. A few Jones but nothing with sons. I'll have a look through the RCT council photo archive tomorrow plenty of shopkeepers had photos outside shops back in the early 1900s.

@@Garron88 No problem, I would be very interested to see what you find out 👍 If you come across anything about T.E.Evans chemist (probably 1920s) or J.Burgess chemist (a little earlier) that would be interesting too as I have found a few of their medicine bottles, I assume they would be on Ferndale high street too 🙂

@@VintageParagonUk Jeremiah Burgess chemist was 44-45 High street Ferndale started around 1895 (now Harrison's home decor) that was still around in the 50s when my late father was a kid. Couldn't see anything in the business directory for T.E Evans but only looked up to 1912.

Most towns and villages needed to dump their rubbish somewhere, good places to look are along rivers and streams on the outskirts of towns or look on old maps for quarries, ponds or ditches that might have been filled in. Good luck with your hunt 👍
