I have always been interested in building a PLEX server for myself. I have a lot of physical media so when Plex reached out I decided to start a plex server build 2019. I had no idea it would help me love listening to music again.

Like you, I tried Plex on and off for a few years but really didn't use it to it's full potential. Then, last year, I bought the Plex Pass Lifetime (which if you are going all in, is worth it), built a server with Linux on an SSD and now Plex is rockin'. The performance is amazing. The cataloging is so fast now. The media can be on any drive but the Plex app on SSD makes a big difference, especially when you access your catalog remotely. Mobile rendering can be painful otherwise.

I've used Plex for about 4 years consistently... Not only do Ienjoy it, but ever since I got gigabit internet speeds my entire family is able to view and watch my library... the library that I paid for..of course...

Been trying Plex for both music and movies. I personally think it’s not the best choice for music server but brilliant for movies and tv shows. Personally for music I much prefer Roon for its metadata and audio features. The big down point for Roon is the price tag though. Maybe you could review that sometimes. Another great vid :)

We have had a plex server for 5 year or so. Good service glad to see it getting more press. How Cord-Cutting started for us.

Besides my own vinyl and cd collection, my favorite server is KZbin, you type in 1970 full album, or for any other year from that era and you'll find gems you can't find anywhere. Very surprising stuff that I stream to my sound system. My laptop is useless now but still have my Oppo player for my hard drives but thanks for the explanation!

KZbin is fine if you can't find a particular track anywhere else, but the audio quality is lacking

@@franklingoodwin like I said, I found gems that are 150$ on discogs so that's better than today's music to my own taste. Thanks.

Coincidentally, I just set up Plex as well. I had been doing Universal Media Server to stream stuff on my home network, but Plex makes the traveling part super easy! I really love it, and I find I'm listening to stuff I hadn't looked at in YEARS. I want to do the lifetime subscription so I can do the cached downloads to my device for road as well as the other features. I missed the 11/22 $79 offer by mere days! Plex should have a PHT discount code for that! As soon as this deal surfaces again, I'm all in!

Seems like a good way to merge Tidal's catalogue with your physical music. It's surprising how many Artists don't have some of their albums on steaming services (particularly Hip Hop artists from the 80's and 90's). This way you can plug the gaps in you're collection. It's also good if you don't like the remastered versions of albums but have the original releases on physical media

Yes agreed universal search engine would be sweet! with activating digital codes for movies etc. Like if I had bought a movie on Google, Vudu, and Amazon streaming services Plex would integrate my online steaming purchases.

Can Plex generate random playlists from your entire collection like Serviio?

integrated music scraper does not work so well. and scrubbing is buggy. The itunes plugin would be ideal because it is easy to manage music & make playlists, but it does not support flac...

How do I integrate "Titles Music" with Plex? I must be missing something. I can't figure it out. Your video is EXCELLENT!! Sure hits home with my same 30-40 year journey of music listening! I'm in the process of buying a Synology & setting up Plex. I do happen to have a USB drive so I'll be able to upload my CD & "8-Track" & Cassette collections. Don't think the 8-track will sound very good. I did have an 8-track quadrophonic system in a couple of my 197x's cars. I forget the different radio Mfg. brands. I had a few dozen quadrophonic 8-track tapes. I think "Super-Session" was my favorite mix, an incredible sound in Quad!! I installed the systems myself. One of them, in my '78 "Smoky-&-the-Bandit" Pontiac Trans-Am. When I bought it, the salesman gave me a small baseball bat to keep the women away! :) Any information about how you integrate other songs/albums with your collections will be helpful. Keep your excellent video's coming! More Plex!

Does it integrate with Spotify in the same way? I'm on there already and have multiple Playlists. No real desire to switch to another streaming service.

haha, I've just set up Plex so I don't have to pay for Tidal premium (for the lossess playback). I have most of the CD's I listen to and have started to FLAC them up. In Aus we pay $25/mth for tidal premium. Doing the math assuming there are only 10 new albums per year that I replay a lot it's cheaper for me to buy the vinyl or CD of those albums than have the subscription. Plus I hate the idea you don't own any of the music. I still have Spotify premium to discover new music and its good enough for on the go listening on normal wireless headphones. But for real audiophile listening at home I've got my high end wired headphones with a desktop DAC/AMP OR my Tube Amp, Record player, and Speakers.

Yep I use the same logic and can’t to the same conclusion. Plus I think the pendulum is swinging back to owning your data rather than steaming in general.

You lost me at the music is stored on my hard drive. My hard drive and my backup hard drive crapped out on me on the same day and I lost tens of thousands of songs. I cried for an hour. I will no longer put that much resource into hard drives. I use Amazon music. It doesn't have every song I want but it's the best of all the streaming apps by far.
