I’m interested in a draw knife or possibly a plough gauge. What degree should the edges be sharpened to? I would guess 10 degrees but not sure????

MrThumper1440 not an expert, but I’m pretty sure 10 degrees is way too shallow for anything other than a razor. If you sharpened it like that it definitely wouldn’t keep an edge for long and would likely result in chips/damage to the cutting edge when cutting through thick belt leather. I’d say at least 20 and honestly you could probably get away with closer to 30.

Brian Dal Ponte .... Thank you for your reply!! I think we’re on the same page. I should’ve been more clear.....10 degrees per side, 20 total degrees. Also, I’ve talked to some people since I’ve posted and although no one’s given me any numbers to go by, they did say they sharpened one side at a greater angle to help encourage the leather to not pull away from the tool(if that makes sense?).

MrThumper1440 I do mean 20 degrees per side, as in you hold it at a 20 degree (or more) angle when grinding against the whetstone. But yeah like sharpening anything, it’s finding a balance between sharpness and edge retention. But something that’s cutting tough leather should have a robust edge I think. Find what works for you but I’m just sayin if you sharpen at 10 degrees per side you might have to resharpen a lot lol
