I present the highlights of Plovdiv Bulgaria, including some cultural examples of the Greek, Roman, Ottoman, 19th century Bulgarian Revival and Communist eras.
Plovdiv is the second-largest city in Bulgaria, in the historical region of Thrace. It has a population of 347,000 as of 2024 and 700,000 in the greater metropolitan area.
Plovdiv is the third oldest oldest city in Europe. It is estimated that it was founded around the beginning of 6th century BC. Called Pulpudeva in Thracian times, it was renamed Philippopolis in 341 BC after its conquest by Philip II of Macedonia. From AD 46 it was called Trimontium and was the capital of the Roman province of Thrace. Plovdiv repeatedly changed hands during the Middle Ages until 1364, when it was taken by the Turks. Russia helped liberate Bulgaria from Ottoman rule in 1878. The Bulgarian Communist era began in 1946 through 1990.
