As long as there are farmers who care about both their history and the art of ploughing , people like me thousands of miles away will be forever grateful.

My dad farmed 100 acre farm with just 4 horses until I was 14 in 1959. (then he bought an 8N Ford) He plowed with an IH 1-16 plow using 3 horses.( it had a seat and steel wheels ) As a kid I loved to walk behind in the furrow. When plowing with horses you can hear the soil turning over Good memories !

In "1964" when I was nine or so, I took some kite string and tied it to the forelock of my great uncle's plow horse that weighed in at right around two thousand pounds like the beautiful horse in this video and he'd allow me to lead him all around the field. When he stopped in his tracks and raised his left front leg, that was my signal to climb up and get a great view of the farm from his broad back. He'd graze and flick his ears back and forth and we'd spend the afternoon together. Sometimes I'd bring a library book and sit up there and read. My cousins were so jealous. :D I was the only kid out of the whole crowd of cousins that he'd allow to "ride" him. :D It wasn't like he'd go where I directed him. I was just along for the ride. :) Excellent team. Works well together.

The soil here doesn't scour well especially when it's moisture. Where I grew up we never had trouble scouring and seldom used more than 2 horses to plow. Here we used 3, 4 and sometimes 5 horses plow.

Brings back memories, my grandpa had two work horses named King and Queen. We had tractors but they would be used to “tickle scratch” the top of the soil so it would dry out and tractors could work the ground up for planting. My grandpa let me take the horses to the barn when I was small, the horses walked so fast it felt like my feet weren’t touching the ground.

Amazing, we do the same here where I live. My great grand father did it with two bulls long ago. We still use horses mainly when we have the lines of crops or veggies and we go by the side to get rid of the bad weeds. We take care a lot of our horses, we love them, they do most of the job, you have to guide them. Also, nice spot to grow some organic veggies for your family, greetings from Rapa Nui.

My old man started ploughing with horses as a lad in the UK. He was also the sprayer guy on his last job ending his career in one of those space pod self contained sprayer things. His work buddy and next door neighbour once used a rotavator to cultivate their conjoined gardens and took down a stone wall to get a tractor in to do the work. Then them and their boss were told to put the wall back up EXACTLY how it was before because the wall was a listed structure. The wall wasn’t 1000years old but the farm was in the Doomsday Book- I even found it in a copy at college when I moved to the US. A certain acreage had to have a certain number of ploughs and ploughmen. And then the Normans (or Breton allies) could tax the farm.

That was really neat to see. With out going into writing a whole novel, simply put, my buddy run dinky garden tractors and a single bottom plow, and often times a multi-tang tiller... and it requires everything that equipment has to do its job, and this two horse and plow set up makes it look easy. I really enjoyed seeing this. Thank you for taking the time to share this "REALNESS". Truly amazing to see, that a nation grew to what it is today, because of this process of manually plowing the soil. The horses do not ever realize how much horse power they have, lol. (Pun intended), just looks like it is effortless for them.

Clydesdales by Will H Ogilvie The Suffolk Punch will keep the road; The Percheron goes gay; The Shire will lean against his load All through the longest day; But where ploughland meets the heather And earth from sky divides, Through the misty Northern weather, Stepping two and two together, All fire and feather Come the Clydes! The Hunter gallops on the lea, The Garron treads the ling, The Hackney, touching nose and knee, Will make the roadway ring; But, apart from play and pleasure, With the sweat upon their sides, Where the furrow is to measure, And the earth to turn for treasure, Serfs of little leisure, Go the Clydes! To each the favourite of his heart To each his chosen breed, In gig and saddle, plough and cart To serve his separate need! Blue bloods for him who races, Clean limbs for him who rides, But for me the giant graces, And the white and honest faces, The power upon the traces, Of the Clydes!
