Step 1 of preparing the soil for planting is Ploughing or Turning. Here we demonstrate this process using a John Deere 5045D pulling an JD 402 Disc Plow.

Great informational demonstration of vintage agricultural impliment. I own one of these plows and I haven't used it yet,but I feel these plows are easy to use and little adjustments are required for operation. these plows cut roots better and turn heavy clay soils ,they are a overlooked secret of yesterday's farmer.

Glad to finally see a disc plow work. Grandad had one. Liked it, but didn't use it much. Said it was easier on the horses.

Where the moldboard is for cutting deep and breaking up soil, the disk plow is designed for turning the surface soil. It is excellent at mixing layers and material together (folding in manure and other other bulk) as well as leaving a bed of fractured dirt that is then easy for disk cultivators to then chop up. It isn't as even as a much finer spaced row of moldboards and is limited in depth by the maximum size of disk but in many circumstances there are finer disk plows that do both the plowing and cultivation. If you're going to be doing large home gardens with a tractor a modern disk plow isn't hard to come by and will do what you need. Cultivation is turning away from yearly plowing when possible but its still necessary for vegetable/root crops and if done under the correct conditions is still advantageous to the soil if you're folding in lots of biological material. For grain crops other than corn it really isn't necessary any more.

Rolling disc plows also helped in new ground with tree roots and stumps they cut and rolled over the roots and stumps instead of hanging and tripping

That plow set is doing a great job of turning the soil and must have been very popular for those who used them. I would want one of those if it was being sold now by the company, or Pioneer, who produces implements for John Deere.

neat! but it leaves a real MESS behind it! ouch! i would plow in the late fall and let the rain / frost break the ground down all winter then its a smoother disking ride in the spring....

from what ive read the first disk should be higher up and the second lower, most guys run the first disk deeper and the rear shallower. havent used mine too much since i just got it, to verify it. i have the Ferguson pao 20 so its a 3pt

I've only used a disc plow,,, all 3 pt linkage ,,, 2 furrow on a TE 20 right up to a 5 furrow reversible on a MF 178 ,

Any way I could get a pic of the rear tail wheel where it attaches to the frame? I have a similar plow with a broken part and I’m trying to fabricate a new one but can’t understand how it is supposed to swivel and under what circumstances.

Good video. I subscribed to your channel. That is a nice plow that you have and it does good work. Your tractor was having no problem in pulling it. John Deere still makes disk plows, but it's a secret to them here in North America. I've had my local dealer check on them and even sent an email to to corporate checking into them. They tell that they were available back in the 1990's, but if you Google John Deere disk plow or arados or disc plough it will pull up information on them. Apparently they are available in Central and South America and other countries overseas. The model numbers are the 624; 3 disk, 635; 3 disk, 645; 4 disk, 3745; 4 disk, and 3755; 5 disk. All are 3 point hitch and hydraulically reversible, except the 624 which is manual. I've found videos of them on KZbin. Monroe Tufline make them, but I don't think their's are reversible. Tractorhouse.com under tillage/plows Industrias America has 4 and 5 disk models which are reversible. Do you remember the old disk tillers that they use to make? The disks were in a gang instead of separate like on the disk plow. That's what we used on our farm. I have never understood why they weren't more popular than the moldboard plow. They look like they would certainly pull easier and work in more types of soil. If you decide to check into the new John Deere plows let me know how you do. Like I say good luck.

+Steve Abernathy. Hello! Like I said in the comment, good luck. What gets me is I contacted the corporate folks and they didn’t try to help me. You would think that they would want to make a sale. I guess one could go to Mexico and go to a John Deere dealership and purchase one and bring it back into the United States. I am sorry to say, but Mexico has a lot of crime and being an American, that might not work out to well. Check out Tractorhouse on the internet, you might find a used one under John Deere plows. Also on Tractorhouse, there is an equipment dealer in Texas, I can't remember their name, but they sell Industrious America disk plows, I think they're made in Mexico and I heard that they use John Deere bearing, but I don't know if this is a fact. Anyway let me know what you find out and how it goes.

+tkguyok. That is Industrias America not Industrious America. Montgomery Tractor Co., Seymour, Texas (888) 458-1702 sells them. The nice thing about these plows and the John Deere plows are they're reversible.

@Red Field Organics, LLC. How does the disk plow responds on stones and stony grounds?
@robertclark4929

Very nice. I hsd a Dearborn 2 disc 3ph plow. it was heavy as hell and hard on a 50hp Ford diesel. Dont know how an 8n ever moved one. Pull type impliments always do better. A pull harrow will outdo a 3pt harrow anydsy.

I'm partial to pull type equipment as well. My neighbor has several pieces that I love to borrow at times. Pull type harrows really outshine 3pt equipment in my book.

+Steve Abernathy I found an old pull type JD "disk tiller" in a fencerow once. Wanted to keep it but was too much for an M Farmall. Seems like it had 8 disks on it with iron wheels. I sold it.

+Robert Clark. Hello! We had a friend that had a John Deere A and he pulled a John Deere 6 disk tiller. That seemed to be a load for the tractor. I think a John Deere A and a Farmall M has about the same in power. Was the 8 disk hydraulic or manual lift?
@robertclark4929
@robertclark4929 7 жыл бұрын
+tkguyok That ole tiller we got was a iron wheeled rope trip lift model. Didnt ever try it because I honestly didnt think that M would pull it. At least not effectivly anyway.Maybe skimmed the top of the gro6nd.
@tkguyok
@tkguyok 7 жыл бұрын
I figured that it had the rope trip lift, most of them did. I did see one that did have a hydraulic lift. It was abandoned on the edge of a field near an abandoned house. Yeah, you couldn't pull it very deep in the ground with the Farmall M. Now, a Farmall Super M or Super MTA probably would pull it, especially the Super MTA with the added power of the torque amplifier. We had a Farmall H and Super C. With the H we pulled a 5 disk International tiller and the Super C we pulled a 4 disk Case tiller. They would roll the soil.

@tkguyok
@tkguyok 8 жыл бұрын
+Bill Bright. Hello! I read on a blog about disk plows that was on the internet. One of the bloggers said 15 horsepower per disk is required and this also could be influenced by your type of soil, sandy loam, clay, etc. I hope this helps you.

How is it in more rocky soil ?
@sdabernathy
@sdabernathy 8 жыл бұрын
Probably not very well. The disc are thin and likely would chip and break in rocky soil. Mine have a couple of chips out them from the previous owner who had some rock in his fields. For clay and sandy soils though they work like a charm. I would go with a moldboard plow in rocky soil as they are stronger and less likely to chip

Would do a much nicer job at a little slower speed. Probably would've been pulled at half that speed originally. Plowing in any form is not a race. It's a about rolling the soil. Pointless to exceed the capabilities.
