Its ironic that despite the thousands of protestant sects that stem from the reformation, and continued "misunderstandings" of "clear" biblical interpretation by those like Calvin and Zwingli, protestants STILL are adamant that the Holy Spirit will guide the individual reader of Holy Scripture to the truth, without any councils, creeds, confessions - neither the Church. Such chaos and arrogance

Interesting stuff, I'm a Van Tillian who's never understood the bizarre criticism of Reformed Scholasticism and I've been helped a lot by the channel. Thankfully I came to Van Til through Frame so I've never been dogmatic about Van Til to the extent of James White, who seems to think the baptist confession of faith itself disproves Divine aseity.

Glad to help! I certainly think that criticism of Reformed Scholasticism (from professing Reformed Baptists/Presbyterians is quite odd as well; I think that it stems from an over dependence on some of the older scholarship that has made some fairly significant mistakes on continuity/discontinuity in the Reformed tradition. At some point I’ll be putting out a video on the Scholastic method & the use of Aristotle in Reformed Orthodoxy.

@@scholasticismreformed166 oh that would be helpful, something else would just be a basic introduction. Obviously I'm working through Richard Muller but I bore easily with historical theology, getting into Reformed Orthodoxy is pretty intimidating, for a Van Tillian the resources are all but public domain, but for Thomas? What do I have to do, read Edward Feser? It's just downright scary. I think that drives a lot of people away. They're afraid of over complicating everything.

I’m EO and found this edifying. Thanks. Would you say that you reject Gottschalk’s heresy on the grounds that it’s a version of equal ultimacy? Also do you have any resources on responses to St. Phillaret and the Confession of St. Peter Mogila?
@scholasticismreformed166
@scholasticismreformed166 Жыл бұрын
So sorry for the delay; but yes at least from what I have heard of Gottschalk, I’m not a big fan of his language or that of “double predestination” in general (though I understand why some people use it). As for St. Phillaret and the Confession of Mogilia, I’m not aware of any responses to it other than my own thoughts unfortunately.

I don't even need to watch the video! The title speaks for itself! Let's see now...the Orthodox Church, which has existed since Pentecost in 33 AD, and which gave us the full canons of Scripture, and has continued to hand down the faith as given to the Apostles from the beginning, somehow "misunderstands" the clearly heretical teachings of the "newcomer" on the Christian Scene, John Calvin! Doesn't sound too plausible.
@scholasticismreformed166
@scholasticismreformed166 9 ай бұрын
Any preface that includes the comment that one won’t even listen to the other person is automatically a poor response. As for the general idea of the video, regardless of the claim you’re making about the Orthodox Church, it’s completely possible for the EO Church to have “continued to hand down the faith as given to the Apostles from the beginning”, and yet have its apologists misunderstand a theological tradition. Now of course, this is not to say that it’s limited to apologists (since I think that the Council of Jerusalem 1672 does a bad job as well), but my focus is not on who has the true church/fullness of the faith, but on understanding one another regarding our actual beliefs.

"One who gives an answer before he hears, It is foolishness and shame to him." Proverbs 18:13 The ego and pride of internet EO zealots knows no bounds. Fortunately, I know many of my real EO friends who would find your behavior a bad representation of their faith. It's off-putting to other Christians, and the constant responses to actual arguments with merely stating that we're all "heterodox" anyway, so de facto wrong, is about as sophisticated as a typical anti-intellectual Evangelical. Ironically, that's the kind of shallow attitude that many converts to Eastern Orthodoxy wish to avoid.

Imagine believing that God is responsible for evil doing
@scholasticismreformed166
@scholasticismreformed166 7 ай бұрын
What does “responsible” mean here? God is the first cause of all things (and some may subsequently argue for physical premotion), but he does not will evil *qua* evil. The object of his will is the permission of said evils. Sacred Scripture also attests to God’s providence in the relevant subject, of which I can provide examples if you’re interested.

@@scholasticismreformed166 You believe in predestination don't you? That means you don't believe in our biblically evident God given free will and that He is responsible for evil.
@scholasticismreformed166
@scholasticismreformed166 7 ай бұрын
@@TruLuan have you watched the video? This may clear up these misunderstandings. I never understood why some people will comment on a video with criticism, before actually watching it. As to your question, yes I believe in predestination, as the NT demonstrates. There should be *no* debate on the whether there is predestination/are there any who are predestined, since that is explicit in Scripture (I’m sure you know the common examples that are cited). The real debate is about the *cause* and/or condition of predestination, some saying that predestination is ante praevisa merita (before foreseen merits) or post praevisa meria (after foreseen merits), the former of which is also known as “unconditional election.” Lastly, I’ll just add that we do believe that God has granted us with essential free choice. As Francis Turretin says: “[W]e establish free will far more truly than our opponents; so the writings of our men abundantly teach that we by no means repudiate this term when properly understood.” - 𝘐𝘯𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘵𝘶𝘵𝘦𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘌𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘤 𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘺, X.1.iii

@@scholasticismreformed166 I'll give your little video a watch but first I need to know if you presbyterians meet the marks of the church. Do you guys have a church in every nation land and tongue like the Catholics? Do you guys uphold the threefold hierarchy of Priest (or presbyter), Deacon, and Bishop? Are you guys united in beliefs on a global scale as 1 Corinthians 1:10 tells us? Do you guys believe the Eucharist IS Jesus' body and blood as told in John 6. Do you believe in faith AND works as context in Scripture tells us? Do you believe the true church was lost at any point, as that would be contrary to Christ's words in Mat 16:18-19? Do you recognize the necessity of infant baptism as it replaced circumcision?

@@TruLuan Again the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he incited David against them, saying, “Go, number Israel and Judah.” (2 Sam. 24:1) Then Satan stood against Israel and incited David to number Israel. (1 Chron. 21:1) God doesn’t cause evil but allows it, this two verses proves my point.
