@keithwhisman I was raised pentecostal. My father was a pastor. My mother a missionary. I don't do what others do. I do what is right for me. I wasn't born orthodox. If you're orthodox, then you understand that someone has to bring you in. I can only marry another orthodox christian. I'm not married. We will have the same family values, moral values, I do believe the man is the head of the home. For me personally we have to believe in the same. My grandmother was Baptist. Orthodoxy and Baptist and pentecostal are two different things. Both believe in GOD and Jesus, but two very different faiths. I spent many years visiting and staying in monasteries. Baptist Don't go to monasteries. The monastery is a very big part of my life. Wisdom and knowledge strength love humbleness teaching how to carry yourself is in the monastery. Home for me. No I'm not a nun. Orthodoxy is my life.

I have been a member of an Fundamentalist Evangelical church for 15 years. The sanctuary resembles a concert venue. My parents converted to Orthodoxy in their 70s. Unfortunately they don’t live in the same city as me. I have grown to love their church. I feel a much deeper connection to Christ. I will go to an orthodox service here occasionally. Unfortunately my husband is extremely fundamentalist. I know in my heart I need to pursue Orthodoxy. Pray for me.

Orthodox is very similar to Catholic beliefs. Check out Torben Sondergard. He was Lutheran (which also has similarities to Catholicism) until he was baptized in the Holy Spirit. He then started preaching the Gospel, praying for healing and casting out demons & making other disciples. He left Denmark (if memory serves me) to seek asylum in the US when he started getting persecuted for teaching others to make disciples- preach the gospel, heal the sick, & cast out demons. He has been here for 2-3 years, making disciples here (the Last Reformation). He has now been locked up for over 3 months now on bogus charges [that he didn't find out for a long time] that can be proven false. He is now being persecuted here, in the US. His wife and kids are suffering, too. We were told the "body of Christ" will suffer persecution. It has started here in the United States.

@@flisom what does that mean? Lots of traditions (including several Protestant) pray pre-written prayers so it can’t mean that. The Book of Common prayer that Anglicans use certainly train us to think true and gospel thoughts about the Lord. Many (most?) of the prayers date back to the patristic period. How is EO different/better?
@flisom
@flisom 3 жыл бұрын
@@adamsmith4195 the difference is that as Catholics change the way they think about their faith, Catholic prayers are changed to accommodate this new way of thinking. Synergism (Arminianism, Roman Catholicism, Eastern Orthodoxy) and Calvinism are both heresies rooted in prideful human reason. In his dogmatics John Theodore Mueller writes: "If God alone works conversion in man, then it cannot be maintained that He really desires the salvation of all men; for, actually He does not convert all. To this we reply that Holy Scripture teaches both the sola gratia and the gratia universalis; that is, God alone converts and saves sinners, and He earnestly desires to save all sinners. Both doctrines must therefore be taught side by side without any modification or qualification of either of them. It is true, if this is done, the theologian is confronted with the perplexing problem, which human reason cannot solve, "Why, then, are not all saved?" (Cur alii, alii nonf Cur alii prae aliisf) Calvinism solves the mystery by denying the universalis gratia; synergism, by denying the sola gratia, whereas the theologian who is loyal to Scripture does not attempt any solution of the mystery at all, just as little as he endeavors to solve the mysteries involved in the doctrines of the Holy Trinity, the personal union, the real presence, etc. Reason indeed argues thus: Since all men are in the same state of guilt (in eadem culpa) and only God, who earnestly desires to save all men (universalis gratia), can save sinners (sola gratia), the actual conversion of all men must needs follow. But the true theologian does not recognize reason as his principle of faith (principium cognoscendi) ; he is bound to Scrip- ture as the only source and rule of faith, which, however, does not explain this crux theologorum."

What I like about Orthodox Church when compared to other Christian Churches: - Christmas and other holidays are actually celebrated because of Jesus Christ, not because of fireworks and expensive presents. It's about Christ and family. - There's no pope. Only God and people. They do not worship anyone else except God himself. - The feeling when you enter the church and the design of churches is more on the light side, while for example Catholic gothic style is more on the dark side. Orthodox churches feel more right when you see them.
@vennonetes4805
@vennonetes4805 3 жыл бұрын
Like your first two points! A small tidbit might be that the Pope is basically a centralising figure which helps propel the "earthy" political side of power and thus keeps Catholics together unlike other branches. Almost all about control, we could say. Regarding the last point, from a central European pov, I think that there are so many beautiful and light filled Rococo & neoclassical churches, both Catholic (with white walls and gold everywhere, example: the Dom of Salzburg) and Protestant, that equaling Catholicism with Gothic style is kinda simplistic. It's just that Catholics in the late 1800s when building new churches went full "Neo-gothic and neo-romanic" with dark interiors and an overall depressing atmosphere. But yeah, overall I understand how orthodox churches feel more "aboriginal" and "closer" to the ancient ways. Thankfully it's good to have variety

Ive seen a lot of comments here about the Orthodox Church “feeling right.“ It’s a similar false notion protestants use, they “feel” more spiritual when they’re doing their Jesus rock music and feel good preaching. Truth does not care about your feelings. The orthodox misrepresent of the unifying power of the see of Peter, allowance of multiple divorces and adulterous remarriage, nationalistic communities based on ethnicity…huge glaring problems in the Orthodox Church.

In no small part to your videos on Orthodoxy, my wife and I were received into the Orthodox Church-specifically the OCA- last March in the midst of the height of COVID. Your respectful, humble, and intoxicating curiosity is wonderful. I found your videos when I was first reexamining Faith after leaving the Evangelical church. Your thorough looks into the nuts and bolts of faith helped me to bridge the gap between my mind and my heart with Faith. I also greatly appreciate you having the courage to ask the hard- and sometimes uncomfortable- questions of Faith to people that likely disagree. Even in this your humility shows through. You're a bit of a small celebrity among our Parish. Know that you are greatly appreciated and that I destroy the like button on most every video of yours. Christ is Risen!

I'm not orthodox myself but this fills me with hope. There seems to be a relatively large exodus out of the "evangelical" church, largely what seems to be due (in my opinion anyway) to a lack of unified, logically and theologically consistent doctrine. Discussing theology has literally become "taboo" in some circles. Progressivism is infiltrating the church and many north Americans have no firm ground on which to stand, instead swayed this way and that by the winds of relativist politics.

@@neyou6940 Much of "protestantism" is utterly subverted and has little to do with Luther. You need to keep in mind that Luther (and Chemnitz and Gerhard to name other notable Lutheran theologians) taught the bodily real presence in the Eucharist, as Lutheranism still does, but "protestantism" usually does not - thus this umbrella term is misleading - it is like when people say "ancient churches" and pretend that Eastern Orthodoxy, Roman Catholicism, Assyrian Church of the East and Oriental Orthodoxy are one and the same - although they are in schism with each other. When it comes to cultural subversion I would argue that Western Christendom suffered more from liberalism than Eastern Christendom suffered from communism - because liberalism is more subversive in the long run. But sth. to think about is that anyone writing a book about the J as Luther did, would face harsh consequences in any church - which tells you how lukewarm all of them have become.

In every single interview I’ve seen of orthodox pastors/fathers, they are extremely intelligent and articulate their faith perfectly. Growing up in a “born again” church - those pastors definitely weren’t as fine tuned. I feel like I could ask one of these pastors my burning questions that drove me away from my faith and keep me on the edge of it now, and actually get real intelligent answers from them that make sense. Thats all I’ve ever wanted was someone to digest all of the stories I learned as a kid in a way that made sense as an adult instead of getting the “as the lord leads” mamby pamby answers.

Orthodox theology is learned by living it, not just by studying it.., unlike the West it’s not all ‘in your head’ or intellectual/rational “I’ve figured theology out for myself”. It’s not an easy thing to consider until you imagine marriage as a thought plus commitment with no action. It doesn’t work. Our Christian practice is directed towards building a holistic relationship with the Triune God. We are body, mind and spirit.

There is onyl one Orthodox Church, there are just different jurisdictions. What Catholics don't seem to understand is that centralized authority is not the only type of authority- variation and consensus is okay. The other problem is that even if there were only one claimant to being true Roman Catholicism (rather than 4 or 5), the Western Church is split into 10,000 different denominations including Protestantism. Protestantism is the "egg that Rome layed," and Rome doesn't get to disown that child.

Look at history. Catholicism came into reality as a rupture, a break away from the Orthoxox church, and - surprise, surprise :) - it was always militaristic. Actually, the first wars done by the Catholics were against the Orthodox, because of greed, for plunder, for riches, etc. The great “schisma” when the new Catholic branch of Christianity appeared was a political rupture engineered almost a thousand years ago, done to be able to plunder, exploit and rage wars against the Orthodox Christianity in the East, from Byzantium, to Greece, all the way East to the old Dacia, the first nation to adopt Christianity through Saint Andrew, al the way eastward to the Russians (which have always been attacked by the West - France, Germany… Catholics). It is still visible today, that mentality of exploitation, occupation, and militarism… remember how Greece was treated after the financial crisis of 2008, although in EU there were Catholic countries which were in a much worse financial condition than Greece? How about the pattern of wars and colonization of the Catholic countries against the Orthodox Christian nations? How come Orthodox Christianity never had any colonies like say in Africa? (The Protestants, in whatever form, Anglicans and so on, were deviations from Catholicism, probably even more militarized - ref the Evangelical Christian’s created by the English, the Anglican Church, of which I found out very recently). In all predominantly Christian Orthodox nations there is a certain deep spirituality, the key to their resilience, that holds together the nation (with diverse people regardless of ethnicity, religion, etc) like the roots of a majestic tree hold it in sunshine as well as in any storm. In powerful storms, a tree may bend, but with deep healthy roots, it just never falls. Some other telling difference, just ask yourself “why?” like that : In Orthodox Christianity, never, never, there were actions like burning people alive, like the Catholics did extensively for years during the Inquisition. Something like this, like that Inquisition widespread inside Catholicism, would have never even been imaginable in the Orthodox Christianity spirituality, which is centered around the idea that all lives are to be protected, cherished, all people helped, respected, and each Orthodox Christian should never hurt another person, but do only good to all the people. That’s the focus.. It may be weakness, often nativity, when confronted with militarism and aggression - but the truth is that’s something so based, so valuable, that it is actually strength and resilience.

Can we expect a Syriac Orthodox Church tour and understanding? The Syriac liturgy-rite is spread across the Middle East in Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, Iraq and South India (Kerala) and is the earliest and purest form of the expression of Christianity. Our prayers are in Aramaic and we have speak an Aramaic dialect, the language of Christ

Anyone looking to convert to orthodoxy, or interested in it, I recommend you to find and view the KZbin video series "Finding the church that Jesus built 101", it was a series of seminars shot in Oklahoma like back in 2001, and the videos are not in order so flip through until you find the first video and then the second (there are several but the first two are important)--- in the first two videos the guy pretty much smashes (kindly) Protestant thinking and gives a good and somewhat entertaining historical explanation of the establishment of the church, including the breaking away of Catholicism and from there the formation of each of the main Protestant sects, and the foundations of western church thinking..it's a pretty good video series 👍. Coming from a Protestant background there are admittedly a few things in Orthodoxy that are stumbling blocks for me, however I think it's undeniable that Orthodoxy is the original Church, whether one accepts it or not... And I'm in the process of accepting it 👍.

I left Protestantism (thank you Jesus!). No more show biz church for me anymore, no more Sunday friends and then ignore me all week. No more polite shunning because I’m a single mom, no more shunning because my sons are fatherless. No more shaming. In orthodoxy we have each our spiritual father for LIFE and God father for life. We always have a spiritual leader to call anytime we are in trouble and need a friend. We are never alone or left out because it makes someone uncomfortable. We BELONG. And not to mention, they are bang on with bIblical theology and standing firm politically. We all fast together and encouraged to pray as a weapon against the enemy. We believe all Christians are our brothers and sisters❤ Orthodoxy is a true family ❤❤❤
