Select Kia Plug-In Hybrid models have paddles located on the left and right side behind the steering wheel.
When used in conjunction with the ECO Drive Mode, they are PADDLE SWITCHES that control the Regenerative Braking system.
When used with the Sport Drive Mode, they function as PADDLE SHIFTERS - controlling the transmission gear selection.
Let’s take a closer look…
Press the DRIVE MODE button to ensure the vehicle is in ECO Drive mode. The paddles will now control the REGENERATIVE BRAKING SYSTEM.
REGENERATIVE BRAKING is typically used in Electric and Plug-in Hybrid vehicles.
During deceleration and braking, the vehicle’s electric motor generates magnetic resistance, providing energy that can be stored in the high voltage battery. This can help extend the overall driving range.
Regenerative braking is not like conventional braking. It does not apply the vehicle’s brake system.
Regenerative braking begins when you take your foot off the accelerator.
The left and right PADDLE SWITCHES behind the steering wheel are used to adjust the level of regenerative braking.
Pull on the left paddle switch to INCREASE the level of regenerative braking.
Pull on the right paddle switch to DECREASE the level of regenerative braking.
If you pull and HOLD the left paddle switch, you will reach the maximum level of regenerative braking.
When you select this mode, MAX will be displayed on the instrument cluster.
The SMART REGENERATION SYSTEM controls the level of regenerative braking automatically depending on road and driving conditions.
HOST - VOICE OVER
To activate SMART REGENERATION, pull and hold the right paddle switch.
AUTO will appear above the REGENERATIVE BRAKING level icon on the INSTRUMENT CLUSTER.
When this setting is active, SMART REGENERATIVE BRAKING will remain enabled with each power cycle.
The PADDLE SHIFTERS can be used to manually shift the transmission without taking your hands off the steering wheel.
Place the gear shifter in manual mode.
Then press the DRIVE MODE button which puts the vehicle in Sport Drive mode.
Now, when you pull the right-side “plus” paddle the transmission will shift up to a higher gear.
Conversely, when you pull on the left-side “minus” paddle, the transmission will down shift to a lower gear.
Paddles shifters and paddle switches make driving more efficient… and more fun!
