Whilst driving a Hyundai Tucson plug in hybrid it occurred to me why these things exist
It’s not for the hybrid bit as it’s complete;t use;ess and pointless
It’s just for tax dodgers, it’s the new Ford Ranger

You’re dead right about plug in hybrids being useless. I’ve driven lots. The last one I had was my main Jaguar dealer’s loaner which had been driven with zero charge for ages and was showing 22 mpg. And on the mixed A and B road 28 mile drive back home that’s what it did. Its an F Pace with the 2 litre engine (a bit small for a car that size I reckon though the F Pace is light) I plugged it in to a 13 amp plug and it took all night to charge the battery so when I left the next day it was 100%. By the time I got back to Ashford it was down to zero but it had averaged 100 mpg! However once the battery was done it quickly dropped back to 22. My V8 does that run on about 24/5 mpg. So where’s the saving? Now I don’t care about mpg - that’s why I drive a 5 litre V8 - but if you do, a plug in isn’t the answer. Unless you only stay local and charge up every night. Same as a battery vehicle then. The only difference is you will get to your destination. But if the journey is much over 20 miles you’re saving nowt!

The Gary Barlow of the South Korean car market, you sir are a poet. Those two crease lines (character or swage lines?) between the wheel arches and doors look awful at the beginning of the vlog, like someone has driven into the side of the car. I’m not a lover of touchscreens, prefer my cars to be analogue, but unlike most modern cars and all EVs the touchscreen looks to be incorporated into the dash design rather than a stuck on tablet after thought, buttons galore as well.🤣🤣🤣🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇬🇧

Yes. I have one as a company car and it's a great with all the government subsidies. 😋 The beeping at startup is because of the seatbelt. The beeping while driving is lane warning. The paddles are for situations like climbing hills when you have no battery assist. Drops and holds a gear for 5 seconds. It does tend to hold on to a gear a little long as well so you can use it for going up gears as well. You can turn off the no driving without seatbelts feature. It will never charge on motorway driving, and never charge itself up on any journey really as it uses any charge as soon as you get it to improve fuel efficiency. No point of having a charged battery at the end of the journey. It has a sport mode that uses the engine for improved charging instead of just using the regenerative braking. Some owners think it's being more efficient, but they don't realise it's just using the engine 100% while using it to charge the battery at the same time. Once your home charge is gone then there's only one real power source, the petrol engine, so recharging can only come from that. Sport mode does give a nice kick though and it'll accelerate really well for an SUV. A hybrid will beat most ICE cars away from the lights. It's also a 4x4 so sticks to the road like glue.

I am pretty sure it is pronounced Tuson, silent C as in Tucson Arizona. PHEV's only make sense IF and only IF you charge the battery. Otherwise, it's just a hybrid but lugging about a much bigger battery than a Hybrid. The idea is that if most of your driving is around town and this daily commute falls within the range of said battery, then happy days. You charge overnight on an EV tarrif, come home rinse repeat. However, should you need to do long distance, then no range anxiety as it then simply becomes a normal hybrid. Seems a much better idea than an EV and should still get better MPG than a diesel. I get 64mpg out of my 2006 Prius and that's an ancient standard hybrid. I have never gotten that out of any diesel I owned previously.

Have had a BMW X1 hybrid for two months now, you are correct about the company car tax, it certainly saves a pretty penny each year but you'd be a fool not to plug the damn thing in. A full charge gives around 50 miles on pure electric but can aid overall MPG on longer runs (a 200 mile run last week showed an average of 68 mpg) It also has a feature where you can hold the current charge so you can use electric power in town, where it is most efficient and petrol on motorways, where it is most efficient. Currently I have 4000 miles on the car and it is averaging 58.3 mpg overall, around 10mpg more than my previous TDI Tiguan, so, used correctly, they are more cost effective. As for performance, it'll do 0 to 60 easily under 7 seconds, motorway speed acceleration snaps your head back and allegedly 3 figure speeds are easily attainable. Not the perfect solution for all but certainly better then just plain petrol or diesel.

Love my rav4 phev. 50 miles on a charge. Plug in regularly. Only buy petrol every 3 months and then only £15 worth each time. The only reason for refuelling with petrol is to keep the petrol fresh. I have been on a trip from Torquay to York return and averaged 55mpg in hybrid mode. If I require power to join a motorway or overtake 5.7 seconds to 60. A brilliant car.

Not a scam if properly used , stupid if unproperly used. I have a chargin at home and do less than 40k per day exept on vacation ? the result is less than a litrer of gas during 10 months a year and 7.2 liters for 100k (around 33 mpg) for the other 2 moths. in short i have an electric car that can do long travel. But if i din't have the charging at home or did more km per day it would be stupid. It is just like having a 4*4 huge american pickup and working in a farm OR just driving in center of London. That Tucson is an N LIne version. That is the top of the range, more sporty models that Hyundai do. I have now had 4 Hyundai's as my last 4 cars. An i30, i40, Kona Self Charging Hybrid, and now an i30 Tourer mild hybrid. That Tucson will likely have a button that changes the driving mode. You will likely have the modes Eco, Normal, and Sport. What you normally do, is put it in Sport mode. Then use the paddle gear levers to manually change gear. The self charging hybrid Kona I had was absolutely useless at using the batteries. Go over 20mph and you could guarantee that the engine would switch in.

Not one of your better reviews - it's not bad as you make out.... I have the SantaFe PHEV, which is basically the same running gear in a different body. I bought it myself, and not for any company car perks etc. The basic 1.6 engine is quite powerful in itself, and with the electric motor it takes it to 265bhp, which is well meaty. If you drive in ECO, it will run down to a baseline of 13% so that it always has some battery power to give electric drive in traffic or at low speed, or powerful assistance if you kick it. If you drive in SPORT, it will charge itself up to a baseline of 20% battery so that it has a larger level of assistance. The more you charge (at home), the more you save. I've had mine for a year and charge at home on standard rate electricity - my SantaFe runs at 9p/mile on electricity only, or 17p/mile on hybrid (if I don't plug it in). A home charger (it's electrics are limited to 3.6kW) charges at 10mph, which is fine for daily commutes. In a year, I have averaged the equivalent of 43mpg - which for a car over 2 tonnes is magnificent. Given that my previous car was a MB diesel at about the same weight, this is actually cheaper per mile with the price difference between the fuels, and the insurance is lower. The 6-speed auto is smooth, and so much better than the dual-clutch transmissions (IMHO) - I always liked the proper 'torque converter' boxes. It can be a bit slow to respond when in ECO, because that's how it's designed. If you want to drive more enthusiastically, drive in SPORT or SMART. (Remember it always starts in ECO). Much of the bleeping and bonging is due to meeting NCAP requirements, so don't blame the car - indeed the new EU regulations from the 7th July will naff off even the mildest of us. It's the future defined by wider government, and not manufacturers. There are many features you can turn off, but often they return every time you use the car... NCAP requirements... Get used to it - it's the enforced future! All in all, I like my car and it drives so well - which you would know if you lived with it.

I love the car but the gearbox is a peace of sh.., gearshifts in the most annoying situations like in a carpark on the ramp, it suddenly decides to shift, that shifting takes ages. So you loose momentum and then it kicks in just after you give the person behind you a heart attack. I speed of like an asshole with a crazy amount of wheelspin. Also have the flappy paddles, the only situation the actually work, steep downhills, keeping the car in the same speed. Otherwise I shift down and in 2-3 seconds it shifts up again. Long story short the C4 Cactus, very cheap car with the most crappy gearbox I've ever had, I mean it shifts crappy but it keeps working.

whole thing is a scam and as for the looks - it's like one those knockoff 'matchbox' toy cars they made out of plastic instead of metal and all the body proportions are off and just look way too thick. edit: and i'd keep putting it in reverse because the buttons are the wrong way round. press the one at the front to go back, the one at the back to go forward. genius. future, my arse.

Why does this ‘scam’ comment keep on cropping up? There’s no scam at all.

Totally wrong. I’ve got an 8 yr old Outlander phev. It’s brilliant to drive and costs almost nothing to run. I still get 20 miles out of the battery. Perfect school run or nipping out. I put about £20 in fuel in it every 3 or 4 months. Sometimes it complains i don’t use enough petrol “engine started to maintain fuel system” As an example on intelligent octopus at as of today 7p / kw overnight i put in last charge 6.7kw cost me £0.47p its almost free. Less than 50p get me to school and back plus visiting my mum with still 1/4 battery about 5 miles range. Not all phevs are useless this one we have fits us perfectly and because its 8yrs old currently no road tax. I agree with most of your videos but in my case your dead wrong.

The question is, are the tax savings enough to cover the extra fuel costs you have compared to a diesel capable of 70 mpg?

Easy to tell it's a complete tax dodge. Hardly any drivers of these company car perks actually ever plug them in. That's how you know it's a (legal) fiddle. Why bother? You have to put fuel in them anyhow so why pee about looking for a charger that only gives you a handful of miles before the fuel engine has to kick in?

Had a new Toyota UK made Suzuki Swace 2021. Hybrid.. Didn't see the point of it at all..Went into electric mode for about quarter mile occasionally and sometimes whilst looking for a supermarket parking space. Couple of hundred yards in traffic jams..Waste of time in my experience.

Something I've been saying for years. You'd be stupid to not take advantage of this nice little tax earner. Just remember, never buy one of these with your own money. The switching modules are very expensive and when they go wrong, which they will, you will be in a whole world of pain. You will get better fuel economy by not have to cart around all the hybrid battery technology. Unfortunately the number a cars that are straight fuel powered these days are diminishing rapidly.

What a load of rubbish most people on a daily basis do less than 40 miles so with a phev plugged in at home overnight charging you drive for virtually nothing. Do some research

THE TITLE OF THE PIECE IS FACTUAL. HMRC HAVE NO ISSUE WITH IT. IT'S NOT CONTRAVENING LEGISLATION AND IT ENABLES ANOTHER OPTION FOR THOSE WHO CAN MAKE GOOD USE OF THE ADVANTAGES THAT WORK FOR THEM. IT DOESN'T WORK FOR US, BUT I'M OPEN MINDED ENOUGH NOT TO MINDLESSLY ATTACK THEM, JUST BECAUSE... WHATEVER YOUR INEXPLICABLE IRRELEVANT AND BLINKERED REASONS ARE. IF THIS IS YOUR HOBBY HORSE, YOU NEED TO EXAMINE WHAT ELSE TO DO THAT MIGHT ENRICH YOUR LIFE JUST A LITTLE BIT MORE.

Don’t ruin it for the people who watch this and believe every word of the BS that this bloke spouts 😂 He just panders to the people who probably wouldn’t be able to afford a relatively new hybrid or EV, so they just maintain their ignorant stance that they’re all useless.
